Chapter 5: The Man Who Ordered Her Removal

The security officer pulled the tablet away.

"Sir, please don't touch the device.""

Michael Grant froze.

For a brief moment, the entire lounge seemed to hold its breath.

Then he laughed.

"There's been a misunderstanding.""

My father didn't move.

"That's becoming a familiar sentence today.""

Michael looked at Thomas.

"Tom, can we speak privately?""

"No.""

Michael blinked.

"What?""

"We're discussing an incident involving a passenger, a physical assault, and a potentially unauthorized passenger-screening policy. Everything needs to be documented.""

Michael glanced around.

"Not in front of customers.""

My father stepped forward.

"Why not? My daughter was slapped in front of customers.""

Michael's eyes shifted toward me.

"Richard, I had no idea this involved your family.""

My father gave him a cold look.

"Would you have cared if it didn't?""

Michael opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Victoria quickly stepped in.

"Michael, thank goodness you're here. These people are misunderstanding the situation.""

He turned toward her.

"Victoria, what happened?""

She immediately began explaining.

"An unauthorized passenger entered the lounge. I asked her to leave. She became aggressive, and there was an unfortunate physical interaction.""

I stared at her.

"Unfortunate physical interaction?""

Victoria ignored me.

Michael nodded as though he were listening carefully.

Then he looked at Thomas.

"Is that the version you've received?""

Thomas answered.

"We have multiple witnesses who saw Victoria strike Ms. Brooks.""

Michael's expression tightened.

"Well, if that happened, it was obviously unacceptable.""

My father tilted his head.

"If?""

Michael turned toward him.

"Richard, I am not defending violence. I'm saying we need to establish the facts.""

My father nodded.

"Excellent. Then let's establish them.""

He pointed toward the tablet.

"Why was Danielle's name on a removal list before she arrived?""

Michael looked at the screen.

"I don't recognize that document.""

The security officer spoke.

"Your regional account created the entry.""

Michael laughed nervously.

"Accounts can be accessed by multiple people.""

Thomas folded his arms.

"Not this one. The login required your individual credentials.""

Michael's expression changed.

"That's not proof I personally created the document.""

"Then who did?""

"I don't know.""

My father looked at him.

"You're the regional director.""

"Yes.""

"You control the regional office.""

"Yes.""

"And you don't know who is using your account to create lists targeting passengers?""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"That's why we have an IT department.""

Thomas looked at the security officer.

"Can we establish whether the spreadsheet was modified after the incident?""

The officer tapped the screen.

"Yes, sir.""

He turned it toward Thomas.

"There were two deletion attempts.""

Michael's face went pale.

"When?""

"One occurred four minutes after the lounge manager requested security assistance. The second happened approximately two minutes ago.""

Thomas looked directly at him.

"Two minutes ago?""

The officer nodded.

"The second attempt originated from a device currently connected to the regional office network.""

Michael took a step backward.

"That's impossible.""

My father said nothing.

He simply watched him.

Michael reached for his phone.

Thomas immediately spoke.

"Michael, I would strongly advise you not to contact anyone about this investigation until our compliance team has secured the relevant records.""

Michael lowered the phone.

"Are you accusing me of something?""

Thomas replied.

"I'm asking you to cooperate.""

Michael turned toward me.

"Ms. Brooks, I'm sorry for the inconvenience you've experienced.""

I looked at him.

"Inconvenience?""

He nodded.

"We take customer experience very seriously.""

I glanced at my cheek.

Then at my daughter.

"Your manager hit me while I was holding my newborn. Your assistant told me to leave. Your employees watched. And now we're discovering a list of people your office wanted removed because they didn't look wealthy enough.""

Michael's expression tightened.

"Those policies were never intended to discriminate.""

"Then what were they intended to do?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Would you have wanted your wife treated that way? Your daughter? Your mother?""

Michael sighed.

"Please understand that managing a premium lounge is complicated.""

I stared at him.

"Not hitting mothers is complicated?""

A few passengers laughed.

Michael looked embarrassed.

My father touched my shoulder.

"That's enough, sweetheart. You've already said more than he deserves.""

Then he turned toward Thomas.

"I want the regional office records preserved. Every email, message, policy revision, and access log.""

Thomas nodded.

"Already arranging it.""

Michael suddenly raised his voice.

"Richard, with respect, you're interfering with an operational matter.""

My father looked at him.

"Operational matter?""

"Yes. I manage this region. I have responsibilities.""

"And I have responsibilities too.""

My father paused.

"I helped finance the acquisition that brought this airline into the group. I approved the investment because I believed the company could become an example of excellent service.""

Michael's face remained stiff.

My father continued.

"I didn't invest in it so managers could decide which human beings look expensive enough to deserve a chair.""

Michael glanced around.

Several passengers were recording again.

He lowered his voice.

"Perhaps we should discuss this in private.""

"No.""

My father pointed toward me.

"She didn't get a private room when you decided she didn't belong.""

Thomas received a call.

He answered and listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"You're certain?""

He listened again.

"Send it directly to compliance. Do not alter anything.""

He ended the call.

Michael immediately asked, "What?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Our IT team has recovered an archived folder from the regional office.""

Michael's face went blank.

"What folder?""

"Customer appearance reports.""

Victoria looked at him.

Michael looked at Victoria.

Something passed between them.

My father noticed.

"What are customer appearance reports?""

Thomas opened a new document.

"It appears someone created internal reports about passengers who entered premium lounges. The reports included clothing descriptions, perceived income levels, and instructions about whether staff should challenge their access.""

My stomach tightened.

"You're saying they were judging people by their clothes?""

Thomas nodded.

"That appears to be the case.""

Michael shook his head.

"Those reports were never authorized.""

Thomas looked at him.

"The folder was created under your regional account.""

Michael became defensive.

"I already told you, multiple people had access.""

Thomas opened another file.

"This one is a set of instructions sent to lounge managers.""

He read the first paragraph aloud.

"Staff should maintain the premium atmosphere by discouraging passengers whose appearance may negatively affect the experience of other guests.""

A passenger near the window whispered, "Unbelievable.""

Thomas continued.

"Managers are encouraged to use discretion when determining whether passengers have legitimate access.""

My father interrupted.

"That's not discretion. That's an invitation to discriminate.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"These were guidelines. They were never supposed to be interpreted literally.""

I looked at him.

"Victoria interpreted them literally when she hit me.""

He didn't respond.

Then Emily stepped forward.

"I have something else.""

Thomas turned.

"What is it?""

Emily held her phone.

"I saved an email from Ms. Hayes. She sent it to the lounge staff three weeks ago.""

Victoria immediately interrupted.

"Emily, you don't need to do this.""

Emily looked at her.

"Yes, I do.""

She handed the phone to Thomas.

He read the email.

Then his eyebrows rose.

"What is this?""

Emily spoke quietly.

"She sent it after a complaint involving an older couple.""

Thomas read the message aloud.

We need to stop allowing people to challenge management decisions. If someone looks out of place, staff should question their access before allowing them to settle in. Corporate wants a premium environment, and I expect everyone to protect it.

My father closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, his expression was colder.

"Michael, did corporate actually request this?""

Michael shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

Thomas looked up.

"Then where did the instruction originate?""

Michael remained silent.

Victoria suddenly spoke.

"You told me that corporate wanted the lounge to look exclusive.""

Michael turned sharply.

"Be quiet, Victoria.""

She stared at him.

"You told me that if I allowed certain passengers to remain, I'd be replaced.""

"That's enough.""

"You said you were protecting the brand!""

Michael stepped toward her.

"Stop talking.""

The security supervisor moved between them.

"Sir, please maintain distance.""

Victoria began crying.

"You're going to blame everything on me?""

Michael looked furious.

"You're the manager. You're responsible for what happens in your lounge.""

Victoria stared at him.

Then she laughed bitterly.

"Really?""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

"Then perhaps you should explain these.""

She opened a message thread.

The first message was from Michael.

I want the lounge looking polished before the corporate visit. No exceptions.

Another message followed.

If someone doesn't fit the premium environment, find a reason to move them.

Then a third.

Don't let reception question your decisions.

Thomas took the phone.

He read the messages twice.

"Michael, are these authentic?""

Michael's face had become almost gray.

"They're out of context.""

Victoria shook her head.

"There's more.""

She scrolled.

One message had been sent just forty minutes before my arrival.

Brooks girl is connecting through the lounge this morning. Make sure she doesn't stay.

My father went completely still.

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

Thomas looked at the message.

Then at me.

"Brooks girl?""

My father took the phone.

He read the message.

His expression changed in a way I had never seen before.

"Michael.""

The regional director swallowed.

"Richard, I can explain.""

My father held up the phone.

"Why were you targeting my daughter?""

Michael looked toward the entrance.

Then back at my father.

"I didn't know she was your daughter.""

My father slowly lowered the phone.

"That wasn't my question.""

Michael's silence answered more than any explanation could.

My father looked at Thomas.

"Someone needs to tell me how a regional director knew my daughter would be traveling today.""

Thomas nodded.

"We'll investigate.""

But I was thinking about something else.

The message had been sent before I arrived.

Someone knew my flight details.

Someone had deliberately placed my name on that list.

And someone had instructed Victoria to make sure I never reached the lounge seating area.

I turned toward my father.

"Dad, I think this was planned.""

He looked at me.

"I think you're right.""

Then a security officer approached Thomas with another tablet.

"Sir, we've recovered the original message chain.""

Thomas read the screen.

His face tightened.

He slowly turned toward Michael.

"There's a problem.""

Michael whispered, "What now?""

Thomas looked at my father.

"The message wasn't sent because Ms. Brooks was arriving.""

He paused.

"It was sent because someone wanted to prevent her from meeting a particular person inside the lounge.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at the final line of the message.

Then he read it aloud.

"Do not allow Danielle Brooks to speak with the airline's incoming whistleblower.""

My father's eyes narrowed.

"Whistleblower?""

Thomas nodded.

"Apparently, someone was scheduled to meet her here.""

I looked at him.

"I don't know anyone at this airline.""

Thomas turned the tablet around.

There was a name beneath the message.
