Chapter 2: The Man Who Walked Through the Doors
The first SUV stopped beneath the hotel's golden entrance canopy.
Then the second.
Then the third.
A uniformed doorman hurried outside.
Daniel Brooks looked toward the entrance, irritation spreading across his face.
“What is all this?”” he muttered.
Vanessa adjusted her dress.
“Probably some corporate event. Honestly, this hotel has become so unpredictable lately.””
But the security guards weren't acting like they were welcoming ordinary guests.
One of them opened the first SUV's rear door.
A tall Black man stepped out.
He wore a charcoal overcoat over a perfectly tailored navy suit. His silver-streaked hair was neatly trimmed, and a gold watch rested beneath his shirt cuff.
He didn't look around like someone admiring an expensive hotel.
He looked like someone checking whether something was wrong.
A second man followed him, carrying a leather portfolio.
Then two security personnel entered behind them.
Maya saw him through the glass.
“Dad,” she whispered.
Her father looked up.
Their eyes met.
And suddenly, the man who had appeared so powerful outside became nothing more than a worried father hurrying toward his child.
“Baby!””
He crossed the marble lobby without stopping to greet anyone.
Maya's eyes filled again.
“Dad.””
He reached her and carefully placed one hand against her shoulder, avoiding the baby.
Then he examined her face.
His expression changed.
The faint redness on her cheek was already becoming more visible.
“Who did this?””
Maya looked toward Vanessa.
Her father followed her gaze.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Vanessa stared at the newcomer.
Then she recognized something.
Not his face.
His watch.
She had seen that distinctive gold-and-black timepiece before in a business magazine.
But she couldn't immediately remember where.
Daniel rushed forward.
“Sir! Welcome to the Sterling Crown Hotel. I'm Daniel Brooks, the guest relations manager. Is there something I can help you with?””
Maya's father didn't look at him.
He was still watching his daughter's cheek.
“Did someone strike you?””
Maya nodded.
“Yes.””
“While you were holding the baby?””
“Yes, Dad.””
He closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he looked at the newborn.
“Is she all right?””
“She didn't even wake up.””
He gently touched the blanket.
“Thank God.””
Only then did he turn toward Daniel.
“Who is responsible for security in this lobby?””
Daniel blinked.
“I beg your pardon?””
“My daughter was assaulted in your hotel. Who is responsible for security?””
Daniel straightened.
“Sir, I believe there has been a misunderstanding.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That's exactly what I've been trying to explain.””
Maya's father looked at her.
“And you are?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Vanessa Whitmore. My family has been associated with this hotel for years.””
He waited.
She continued.
“I was simply trying to get past your daughter when she bumped into me. She became aggressive, and the manager was kind enough to intervene.””
Maya stared at her.
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa gave her a dismissive look.
“Please. You already told your version.””
Maya's father turned back to Daniel.
“Did you see the incident?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I arrived after the disagreement had begun.””
“Then how did you determine that my daughter was responsible?””
Daniel cleared his throat.
“I was trying to de-escalate the situation.””
“By ordering the person who had been struck to leave?””
“Sir, I was informed that she had been disruptive.””
“By whom?””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
The answer was obvious.
Maya's father slowly nodded.
“Interesting.””
He extended his hand toward the man holding the leather portfolio.
“Charles.””
The assistant stepped forward immediately.
“Yes, Mr. Bennett.””
“Find the hotel's general manager.””
Daniel's face changed.
“Sir, there's really no need to involve senior management. We can resolve this right here.””
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
“Your name is Daniel Brooks?””
“Yes, sir.””
“Then I suggest you remain here. We have a few things to discuss.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Daniel, you don't have to entertain this. I have a meeting with the Whitmore Development Group this afternoon. My family is one of this hotel's most important clients.””
Mr. Bennett turned toward her.
“Whitmore Development?””
Vanessa nodded proudly.
“My father is Richard Whitmore. You may have heard of him.””
A strange expression crossed Charles's face.
He glanced at Mr. Bennett but said nothing.
Vanessa interpreted the silence as intimidation.
She continued.
“Perhaps we should all remember who keeps businesses like this running. People spend a lot of money to maintain standards.””
Mr. Bennett looked at her fuchsia dress.
Then at Maya's beige blouse.
Then back at Vanessa.
“Is that what you believe this is about?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I'm simply saying that a luxury hotel has to protect its image.””
Mr. Bennett nodded slowly.
“Then perhaps we should discuss the image your behavior has created.””
Daniel attempted another interruption.
“Sir, I understand your concern, but Mrs. Whitmore is a valued guest. We have procedures.””
“Do those procedures allow guests to slap other guests?””
Daniel's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Mr. Bennett continued.
“Do those procedures instruct your staff to remove an injured mother before asking the person who struck her what happened?””
“Sir, I didn't witness the initial contact.””
“Yet you decided who was guilty.””
Daniel shifted his weight.
“That's not how I'd characterize it.””
“Then tell me how you'd characterize it.””
Before Daniel could answer, Charles returned from the reception area.
“Mr. Bennett, I've contacted the general manager. He's on his way down.””
“Good.””
Charles opened the leather portfolio.
“There's another matter, sir.””
Mr. Bennett glanced at him.
“Not now.””
Charles lowered his voice.
“It's regarding today's executive appointment.””
Maya looked at her father.
“Dad, what appointment?””
He gave her a gentle smile.
“Something I wanted to discuss with you after you settled in.””
Vanessa overheard the exchange.
She looked between them.
“Wait. What executive appointment?””
Nobody answered.
She turned to Daniel.
“Why is he behaving as though he owns this place?””
Daniel frowned.
“I don't know.””
Mr. Bennett heard her.
He slowly turned.
“That's an interesting question.””
Vanessa raised her eyebrows.
“I'm sorry?””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a slim black card.
He handed it to Charles.
“Give this to the general manager when he arrives.””
Charles nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
Vanessa glanced at the card.
She couldn't read the small lettering from where she stood.
But she noticed the gold emblem embossed across its surface.
It was the same emblem displayed on the hotel's official corporate documents.
Her confidence began to crack.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “who is this man?””
Daniel looked toward the card.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa stared at Maya.
“Who exactly is your father?””
Maya didn't answer immediately.
She adjusted her daughter's blanket and looked at the woman who had slapped her.
“My father is a man who doesn't like people being mistreated.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“That's not an answer.””
Mr. Bennett stepped beside his daughter.
“It will be soon enough.””
At that moment, the elevator doors opened.
A gray-haired man in a dark suit rushed into the lobby.
He was followed by two senior hotel executives.
The gray-haired man spotted Mr. Bennett and practically ran toward him.
“Mr. Bennett! I'm terribly sorry. I wasn't informed you had arrived.””
Mr. Bennett looked at him.
“Martin.””
“Sir.””
Martin Hayes was the hotel's general manager.
He had worked in luxury hospitality for nearly thirty years, and he rarely looked nervous.
But now his hands were trembling slightly.
He noticed Maya.
Then he noticed her cheek.
His expression turned serious.
“Is everything all right?””
Mr. Bennett gestured toward his daughter.
“No, Martin. It isn't.””
Martin stepped closer.
“Ms. Bennett, are you injured?””
Maya nodded.
“A woman slapped me. Then Daniel told me to leave.””
Martin looked toward Daniel.
“Is that true?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Sir, there was a disagreement between two guests. I was attempting to manage the situation.””
Mr. Bennett interrupted.
“That's not what happened.””
Martin looked at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
Vanessa suddenly became polite.
“Martin, thank goodness you're here. This has been a terrible misunderstanding. I was simply defending myself.””
Martin looked confused.
Then he noticed the black card Charles was holding.
His eyes widened.
He took it.
Read it.
And went completely still.
“Mr. Bennett…”
“Yes?””
Martin's voice dropped.
“Are we supposed to be expecting you as the new chairman today?””
The lobby became silent.
Vanessa's lips parted.
Daniel stared at the floor.
Maya looked at her father.
And Martin turned toward the assembled staff.
“Everyone, please understand something. You're standing in front of the man who owns the Sterling Crown Hotel.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
But Mr. Bennett wasn't finished.
May you like
He looked at Daniel.
“Now, let's talk about what happened to my daughter.””
