Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Evelyn Carter was waiting in the hotel's private executive lounge.
She sat near the window with a small leather handbag resting on her lap.
Her hair was shorter than James remembered, and her face looked noticeably thinner.
But he recognized her immediately.
“Evelyn.””
She stood.
“Mr. Bennett.””
James studied her.
“You disappeared eight months ago.””
“I know.””
“You left without completing your handover.””
“I know.””
“You worked for me for ten years. You had access to sensitive family and company records. Then you resigned without a proper explanation.””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
James gestured toward a chair.
“Sit down.””
Charles stood near the entrance.
Maya entered behind her father, carrying the newborn in her arms.
Evelyn's eyes moved toward her.
“Ms. Bennett.””
Maya nodded cautiously.
“Hello.””
Evelyn looked at the baby's blanket.
“She's beautiful.””
“Thank you.””
James sat opposite Evelyn.
“Start talking.””
Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.
“I have copies of documents showing that Richard Whitmore attempted to gain control of the Eleanor Bennett Family Trust.””
James didn't touch the envelope.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted access to the money.””
“That's obvious. I want to know how you became involved.””
Evelyn swallowed.
“I was working for you when Mr. Whitmore first approached me.””
“When?””
James's expression hardened.
“And you didn't tell me?””
“He offered me a position at his company.””
“Why would he offer my executive assistant a position?””
Evelyn looked toward Charles.
Then back at James.
“He wanted information.””
“What information?””
“Your company's acquisition plans. Your personal schedule. Details about the trust.””
James leaned forward.
“Did you give him anything?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer landed heavily.
Maya looked at her father.
Charles moved away from the door.
James remained completely still.
“What did you give him?””
“Meeting schedules. Some internal correspondence. A copy of an old trust administration letter.””
James's voice became colder.
“You stole confidential documents?””
“Yes.””
“And you accepted money?””
Evelyn nodded.
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
Charles shook his head.
“Unbelievable.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I know what I did.””
James placed both hands on the table.
“Then why are you here?””
“Because it got worse.””
She removed several documents from the envelope.
“These are payment records. They show transfers from Whitmore Development to a consulting company registered under a different name.””
Charles examined them.
“Who owns the consulting company?””
“An associate of Richard Whitmore.””
James picked up the first document.
“Where did this money go?””
Evelyn pointed toward a column.
“Some of it was used to pay for access to confidential information. The rest was transferred into an account connected to the trust's proposed administrative structure.””
Patricia's video call was still open on Charles's laptop.
Charles turned the camera toward the documents.
Patricia examined them.
“Evelyn, where did you obtain these?””
“From an internal archive at Whitmore Development.””
“Did you have permission?””
“No.””
Patricia sighed.
“These records will need independent verification.””
James nodded.
“Understood.””
He turned toward Evelyn.
“You said it got worse.””
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
“Richard didn't just want information about the trust. He wanted control of the trust's accounts. He believed that if he could convince the right people that the charitable foundation was being reorganized, he could move the assets without attracting immediate attention.””
Maya stared at her.
“But why would he want to take money meant for mothers and children?””
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“Because the trust had more available capital than he expected.””
James's expression darkened.
“Was my daughter's name used?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Her name appeared in the proposed authorization documents.””
Maya looked at the papers.
“Without my permission?””
“Yes.””
“Did they forge my signature too?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she pulled out another page.
Maya recognized the signature immediately.
It was hers.
Or something designed to look like hers.
Her hand began to tremble.
“That's my signature.””
James stood.
“Evelyn, how did they obtain this?””
“You signed a document several years ago when your mother was alive. It was a routine beneficiary acknowledgment. Someone copied the signature from that file.””
Maya felt sick.
“They used my signature to take Mom's money?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I'm sorry.””
Maya looked at her father.
“Dad…”
He moved beside her immediately.
“I'm here.””
“I don't understand. Why would someone do this?””
James placed a hand on her back.
“Because they thought nobody would notice.””
Maya looked toward Evelyn.
“Did Vanessa know?””
Evelyn didn't answer.
James noticed.
“Evelyn?””
She looked down.
“I don't know everything Vanessa knew. But she attended several meetings where the trust was discussed.””
Charles frowned.
“Meetings with her father?””
“Yes.””
“Did she participate?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She asked questions about the beneficiary structure and the amount of money available.””
Maya closed her eyes.
The woman who had slapped her in the lobby might have known that the family trust she was trying to protect existed.
But there was something else Evelyn hadn't explained.
James leaned forward.
“Why did Richard need the hotel partnership?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because the hotel was going to be used as a public-facing demonstration project.””
“What does that mean?””
“Richard wanted to announce a joint community investment program. He intended to present the Whitmore Development Group as the primary administrator and the Bennett family as a financial partner.””
Charles shook his head.
“That would have made it appear legitimate.””
“Exactly,” Evelyn said.
James looked toward Patricia's screen.
“Could that have allowed him to move the trust money?””
Patricia nodded slowly.
“It could have created an appearance of authorization, but the actual transfers would still require valid approvals. We need to inspect the account records.””
James turned back to Evelyn.
“Why bring this to me now?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I found out they were planning to use Maya's name in a public announcement.””
Maya frowned.
“What announcement?””
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“Your father was supposed to announce the new family foundation today. Richard planned to introduce you as the public face of the project.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“That was the presentation.””
“Yes.””
“But I was supposed to lead the program.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Richard wanted people to believe the Whitmore family had secured your support.””
Maya's face tightened.
“So the presentation wasn't just about the hotel.””
“No.””
“It was about making Mom's trust look like it belonged to them.””
Evelyn nodded.
James stood and walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he stared down at the traffic moving through the city.
Then he turned.
“Evelyn, did Richard know my daughter would be attending today's meeting?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know she would be here with her baby?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Vanessa mentioned it in a meeting.””
Maya stared at her.
“What did she say?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Do you really want to hear it?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn took a breath.
“She said you weren't the kind of person who would normally be comfortable in a room full of investors.””
Maya's eyes filled.
Evelyn continued.
“She said your father would probably introduce you anyway because he was sentimental about your mother.””
James's jaw tightened.
“And the incident today?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don't know whether it was planned.””
Maya looked at her.
“Did Vanessa know I was coming?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know I had an appointment?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she act like I didn't belong here?””
Evelyn looked at Maya for a long moment.
“Because she believed that if you were embarrassed enough, you'd leave before the presentation.””
The room fell silent.
James turned toward Charles.
“Get me the original appointment records. I want to know who added Vanessa to the guest list.””
Charles began typing.
“On it.””
Then Evelyn reached into her handbag again.
“There is one more document.””
James looked at her.
“What?””
Evelyn placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“This is a copy of an internal email from Richard Whitmore.””
Charles opened it.
The message was dated two days earlier.
Its subject line read:
*STERLING CROWN ANNOUNCEMENT — FINAL ARRANGEMENTS*
Charles began reading.
Then he stopped.
James frowned.
“Read it.””
Charles looked up.
“Sir, the email says Richard expected the partnership announcement to happen today, regardless of whether the final investment documents were approved.””
James narrowed his eyes.
“Continue.””
Charles read the next paragraph.
“Richard instructed his team to ensure that the Bennett family representative appeared in the official photographs.””
Maya looked confused.
“Why?””
Charles continued.
“Because the public announcement would include a photograph of Maya Bennett standing beside Vanessa Whitmore, presenting the new family foundation as a joint initiative.””
Maya's face went pale.
She hadn't agreed to any photograph.
She hadn't agreed to any partnership.
She hadn't even seen the final documents.
James looked at Evelyn.
“Was this the reason Vanessa wanted her removed from the lobby?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Possibly.””
Maya looked down at her baby.
“So she wanted me gone before I could speak to anyone.””
James didn't answer.
He was staring at the email.
Then Charles noticed another line.
“Sir, there's an attachment.””
He opened it.
A photograph appeared on the screen.
It showed Maya.
Not today's photograph.
A photograph taken several weeks earlier outside her mother's old charitable office.
Maya stared.
“Where did they get that?””
Evelyn looked horrified.
“That's from the private archive.””
James stepped closer.
“Why would they have that?””
Charles scrolled down.
Below the photograph was a draft press release.
The headline read:
*WHITMORE DEVELOPMENT AND BENNETT FAMILY ANNOUNCE HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT AMERICAN MOTHERS.*
Maya read the first paragraph.
Then she stopped.
Her name was there.
Her mother's name was there.
And beneath the announcement was a quote attributed to Maya.
“I am proud to entrust the legacy of my mother's foundation to the Whitmore family.””
Maya shook her head.
“I never said that.””
James looked at her.
“I know.””
Charles scrolled further.
At the bottom of the document was a distribution list.
Among the recipients were several major financial institutions, journalists, and senior executives.
The planned release time was 11:00 a.m.
Exactly eighteen minutes after Maya had been slapped in the lobby.
James slowly closed the laptop.
“Richard wasn't simply trying to secure an investment.””
He looked at Maya.
“He was preparing to announce a partnership using your name without your permission.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And there is something else you should know.””
James turned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked frightened.
“Richard wasn't working alone.””
Charles straightened.
“Who else was involved?””
Evelyn reached for the final sheet of paper.
She placed it in front of James.
At the bottom was a signature authorizing the original restructuring proposal.
James stared at the name.
His expression changed completely.
Maya leaned closer.
“Dad, who signed it?””
James didn't answer.
He knew that signature.
He had trusted the person behind it for nearly twenty years.
The name on the document belonged to his own brother.
*Michael Bennett.*
And the phone in James's pocket began ringing.
The caller ID displayed one name.
MICHAEL.
James looked at his daughter.
Then he answered.
“Michael,” he said quietly.
“I think you and I need to have a very serious conversation.””
A familiar voice responded.
“James, before you do anything, you need to know that Maya is in danger.””
James's blood ran cold.
“Why?””
Michael paused.
Then whispered:
May you like
“Because Richard Whitmore knows where the original trust documents are hidden.””
And suddenly, the incident in the hotel lobby seemed like the smallest part of a much larger betrayal.
