Chapter 4: The Secret Richard Whitmore Was Desperate to Hide

“James, please. Don't make any decisions until you hear what I'm about to tell you.””

Richard Whitmore's voice echoed through the Sterling Crown lobby.

James Bennett stood motionless, holding the phone against his ear.

Across from him, Vanessa had stopped breathing normally. Her fingers were wrapped tightly around the strap of her designer handbag.

“What exactly do you know, Richard?”” James repeated.

There was a long pause.

Then Richard answered.

“I know my daughter made a mistake. She's young, emotional, and sometimes she reacts before thinking. But I'm asking you, as a businessman, not to let a personal disagreement destroy a relationship we've spent months building.””

James glanced at Maya.

His daughter was sitting quietly, rocking her newborn while Charles stood nearby.

“Richard,” James said, “your daughter struck a woman holding a newborn baby. Then she insulted her, and a hotel manager tried to throw her out. What part of that sounds like a personal disagreement?””

Richard sighed.

“I'm not defending the slap.””

“Good.””

“But I am asking you to consider the circumstances.””

“What circumstances?””

“My daughter was under pressure. She has been dealing with a lot.””

James's expression remained cold.

“So has mine.””

Vanessa suddenly reached for the phone.

“Daddy, please, let me explain!””

James pulled it slightly away from her.

“Richard, your daughter is standing right here. She has an opportunity to explain herself directly.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Mr. Bennett, I apologize.””

James looked at her.

“For what?””

“For the misunderstanding.””

Maya slowly raised her eyes.

“It wasn't a misunderstanding.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

James returned his attention to the phone.

“Richard, I want you to understand something. I didn't come here to negotiate a business deal. I came because my daughter called me crying.””

Richard's voice became quieter.

“James, listen carefully. There is something you don't know about the proposed partnership.””

James frowned.

“Go on.””

“Your board received a revised financial report yesterday. The Whitmore Development Group isn't simply interested in the hotel partnership anymore. We're prepared to make a substantial investment.””

Charles immediately looked up.

James noticed.

“How substantial?””

“Twenty-eight million dollars.””

A few executives exchanged glances.

Vanessa's shoulders relaxed slightly.

She seemed convinced that the money would save her.

Richard continued.

“I know you have reservations about the situation today, but twenty-eight million dollars is a significant commitment. Let's not allow one unfortunate incident to interfere with something that benefits everyone.””

James looked at Charles.

“Did we receive that revised financial report?””

Charles nodded.

“Yes, sir. It arrived yesterday afternoon.””

“Have you reviewed it?””

“Partially.””

James looked back at the phone.

“Richard, we'll discuss your investment proposal after the investigation. Nothing more.””

Richard's voice sharpened.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Perhaps.””

“You have no idea how much work went into arranging this.””

“Then I suggest you direct that energy toward explaining your daughter's behavior.””

Richard exhaled.

“Vanessa, come home immediately.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daddy, wait. I'm not finished!””

“Now, Vanessa.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, she stared at the screen.

Then she turned toward Maya.

“This is your fault.””

James stepped forward.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn't mean it like that.””

Maya adjusted her baby.

“You've had several opportunities to apologize without blaming me.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“What do you expect me to do? Get on my knees?””

“No,” Maya replied.

“I expect you to tell the truth.””

Martin Hayes, the general manager, approached with a tablet.

“Mr. Bennett, the security team has prepared the full recording. There's also footage from the entrance and reception area.””

“Good. Let's review it.””

The footage played again, this time from another camera angle.

It showed Vanessa deliberately moving into Maya's path.

Then came the slap.

But the second recording revealed something else.

Immediately after striking Maya, Vanessa had turned toward the reception desk and said something to Daniel.

The audio technician increased the volume.

Vanessa's voice came through clearly.

“Get her out of here before she embarrasses this place.””

Daniel's response was equally clear.

“Don't worry. I'll handle it.””

James looked toward Martin.

“Did you hear that?””

Martin nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Daniel, standing several feet away, shook his head.

“Mr. Bennett, I need to explain.””

James turned.

“Go ahead.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Mrs. Whitmore was a regular guest. I was aware of her family's business relationship with the company. I believed removing the other guest would prevent a larger disturbance.””

Maya stared at him.

“So you knew she was wrong?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I didn't say that.””

“You didn't need to. You saw my cheek. You saw my baby. You heard me explain what happened.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

James stepped closer.

“A mistake is forgetting a reservation. A mistake is sending the wrong invoice. What you did was choose whose dignity mattered based on their perceived status.””

Daniel said nothing.

James continued.

“You didn't know my daughter owned a company. You didn't know she had a business appointment. You didn't know her family. And you didn't think any of those things mattered because you assumed she had no influence.””

Martin looked visibly uncomfortable.

James turned toward him.

“Martin, I want a review of every complaint Daniel has handled in the past twelve months.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And I want the names of everyone who approved his previous decisions.””

“Understood.””

Then Charles approached James again.

“Sir, there's something concerning in the revised Whitmore report.””

James turned.

“What?””

Charles opened his tablet.

“The twenty-eight-million-dollar investment is listed as being supported by three institutional investors.””

“And?””

“One of those institutions has denied participating.””

James's eyebrows lifted.

“Which one?””

“Northbridge Capital.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“That's impossible.””

Charles continued.

“They say they've never authorized an investment in the Sterling Crown project.””

James took the tablet.

“Who signed the document?””

Charles zoomed in.

“Richard Whitmore.””

James studied the signature.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about this?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“My father handles the investments. I don't deal with the financial details.””

James handed the tablet back.

“Then perhaps your father has more explaining to do than I initially thought.””

Vanessa's phone began ringing.

She looked at the screen.

DAD.

She answered immediately.

“Daddy?””

Richard's voice was sharp.

“Where are you?””

“Still at the hotel.””

“Don't speak to anyone about the investment documents.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“I said don't discuss the documents.””

She looked toward James.

“Daddy, what's happening?””

“Just listen to me. Have you said anything about the Northbridge report?””

“No.””

“Good. Keep it that way.””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why would I need to keep it that way?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he said something that made her face go completely white.

“Because if James Bennett discovers who actually owns the investment account, we're finished.””

The call disconnected.

Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.

James had heard enough to understand that the problem was no longer limited to a slap in a hotel lobby.

He turned toward Charles.

“Get our legal department on the phone.””

Charles nodded.

“Immediately, sir.””

Then James looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, I think your presentation may have to wait.””

Maya studied his face.

“Dad, what's happening?””

He hesitated.

“Something that could be much bigger than this incident.””

Before he could explain, Charles received another message.

He read it once.

Then again.

His expression changed.

“Sir…”

“What is it?””

Charles looked toward Vanessa.

“The Northbridge Capital account isn't just an investment account.””

James narrowed his eyes.

“What is it?””

Charles lowered his voice.

“It's connected to a trust established in your late wife's name.””

May you like

James went completely still.

And Maya, hearing her mother's name, slowly lifted her head.
