Chapter 3: The Man Who Walked Through the Doors
Richard Collins read the message again.
He was certain he had misunderstood it.
The Grand Meridian Airport Hotel belonged to a national hospitality group with properties in twelve major American cities.
Its chairman rarely involved himself in individual guest complaints.
He certainly didn't personally request security footage from an airport hotel lobby.
Yet the authorization on the tablet was unmistakable.
*PRIORITY EXECUTIVE REQUEST — PRESERVE ALL LOBBY FOOTAGE.*
*GUEST: DANIELLE CARTER.*
*DIRECT OVERSIGHT: OFFICE OF THE CHAIRMAN.*
Richard looked up.
Danielle was still standing near the reception desk.
The same woman he had ordered outside.
The same woman he had refused to listen to.
He suddenly felt the collar of his shirt tightening.
“Who sent this?”” he asked.
The employee, whose name was Olivia, answered carefully.
“Corporate security. They said the chairman's office contacted them directly.””
Vanessa waved a dismissive hand.
“This is ridiculous. Someone must have entered the wrong room number or something.””
Olivia didn't respond.
Richard leaned closer.
“Did they say why?””
Olivia glanced at Danielle.
“They asked whether the guest was safe and whether anyone had physically touched her.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“What?””
Olivia repeated herself.
“They specifically asked whether anyone had physically touched Ms. Carter.””
Richard slowly turned toward Danielle.
“Miss Carter, may I speak with you?””
Danielle looked at him.
“You could have spoken with me twenty minutes ago.””
Richard forced a smile.
“I think there may have been a misunderstanding.””
Danielle touched her cheek.
“A misunderstanding?””
“Perhaps we should move somewhere private.””
“No.””
Richard blinked.
“Excuse me?””
“You wanted me out of the hotel when you thought nobody important was coming. Now you want a private conversation?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don't get carried away. A message from corporate doesn't mean you're suddenly the queen of this place.””
Danielle looked at her.
“I never said I was.””
“Then stop behaving like you own the building.””
Danielle glanced toward the entrance.
“I don't own this building.””
A strange silence followed.
Richard looked relieved.
Vanessa smiled triumphantly.
“See? That's what I've been saying.””
Danielle continued.
“But I know the man who does.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Before either woman could say anything else, the revolving entrance doors began turning.
A tall Black man in his late fifties walked into the lobby.
He wore a charcoal overcoat over a dark business suit. His silver-streaked hair was neatly trimmed, and a leather briefcase hung from one hand.
Two security professionals followed several steps behind him.
He didn't look around for directions.
He didn't stop to admire the chandelier.
His eyes moved immediately toward Danielle.
“Baby girl.””
Danielle's face crumpled.
“Dad.””
The man crossed the marble floor.
His name was Marcus Carter.
He was the founder and chairman of Carter Hospitality Holdings, the investment company that had acquired the Grand Meridian hotel group eighteen months earlier.
He was also Danielle's father.
But the people in the lobby didn't know that yet.
He reached his daughter and carefully wrapped one arm around her shoulders, making sure not to disturb the sleeping baby.
Then he saw her cheek.
His expression changed.
“What happened?””
Danielle tried to speak.
Her voice broke.
“She slapped me, Dad.””
Marcus looked at the red mark.
“Who?””
Danielle pointed toward Vanessa.
The woman in the fuchsia dress suddenly straightened.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Did you strike my daughter?””
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“I think there's been a misunderstanding. Your daughter was being very careless, and she spilled coffee on my dress.””
Marcus didn't look at the dress.
“I asked you a question.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I barely touched her.””
Danielle stared at her.
“You slapped me across the face.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“I was defending myself.””
Marcus looked toward Richard.
“And you?””
Richard stepped forward immediately.
“Mr. Carter, I'm Richard Collins, the guest services manager. I was attempting to resolve a disturbance.””
Marcus studied him.
“By removing my daughter?””
Richard's mouth opened.
Then closed.
“I wasn't aware of her relationship to you.””
Marcus slowly removed his gloves.
“That's interesting.””
He placed them inside his coat pocket.
“So, let me understand this. You needed to know who her father was before you decided whether she deserved to be treated like a human being?””
Richard shook his head.
“No, sir. That's not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Mr. Carter, I'm sure we can all be reasonable here. This woman bumped into me, damaged my dress, and started making a scene.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Did she hit you?””
“No.””
“Did she threaten you?””
“Not exactly.””
“Did she attempt to damage your property?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“She spilled coffee.””
“Accidentally?””
Vanessa looked toward Richard.
He avoided her eyes.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Thank you. That's all I needed to know.””
He turned toward Danielle.
“Are you and the baby hurt?””
Danielle shook her head.
“Amara's fine. I'm just shaken.””
Marcus gently touched the baby's blanket.
“Hello, little princess.””
Amara moved her tiny fingers.
For a moment, the chairman's stern expression softened.
Then he looked toward the reception desk.
“Who is the general manager of this property?””
Richard raised his hand slightly.
“I oversee guest services, sir. The general manager is currently traveling.””
“Who has authority over security footage?””
Richard swallowed.
“Our security director.””
“Call him.””
“Certainly.””
“And call the regional director.””
Richard hesitated.
“Sir, may I ask what this is about?””
Marcus stared at him.
“My daughter was assaulted in a hotel I own. Your employee witnessed it. You then ordered her removed without investigating the incident.””
Richard's face had become pale.
“I didn't know—”
Marcus raised one hand.
“Stop.””
The word echoed through the lobby.
“I am not interested in what you knew about her family. I am interested in what you did when you believed she was just another guest.””
Olivia quietly approached with her tablet.
“Mr. Carter?””
Marcus turned.
“Yes?””
“We have the security footage request ready. Corporate security is preserving the recording now.””
“Good. Make sure the original file isn't altered or deleted.””
“Already done, sir.””
Vanessa's confidence was disappearing.
She looked from Marcus to Danielle, then toward the entrance as if searching for a way out.
“Mr. Carter,” she began, “I really think this has gotten out of hand.””
Marcus faced her.
“What's your name?””
“Vanessa Whitmore.””
“Do you have a reservation here?””
“Yes. I'm staying in the presidential suite.””
Marcus nodded.
“Then I suggest you remain available while we establish exactly what happened.””
Vanessa's eyebrows rose.
“You can't detain me.””
“I haven't asked anyone to detain you.””
He turned toward the security director, who had just arrived.
“I've asked that the evidence be preserved and that everyone involved be identified.””
The security director nodded.
“Understood.””
Danielle looked at her father.
“Dad, I don't want this to become a bigger scene.””
Marcus turned back to her.
“I know, sweetheart.””
He lowered his voice.
“But you shouldn't have to leave a hotel because somebody decided you didn't belong here.””
He looked toward the reception desk.
“Olivia, please arrange a private suite for my daughter and her baby. Make sure she gets everything she needs.””
Olivia nodded immediately.
“Of course, sir.””
Then Marcus looked at Richard.
“One more thing.””
“Yes, sir?””
“Bring me the original guest complaint, the staff incident report, and the names of everyone who was working at this desk.””
Richard nodded nervously.
“I'll get those immediately.””
Marcus opened his briefcase.
He removed a thin black folder and placed it on the marble counter.
The cover carried the Carter Hospitality Holdings emblem.
Danielle noticed the document inside.
“Dad?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I was hoping not to have to bring this paperwork here.””
Richard stared at the folder.
“What is that?””
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a document bearing the signature of the company's board of directors.
He placed his finger on the first page.
“Before we discuss what happens to anyone's employment, there's something about this hotel that everyone working here needs to understand.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What could possibly be more important than this ridiculous incident?””
Marcus looked directly at her.
Then he said something that made Richard take a step backward.
“Because, as of this morning, this hotel was scheduled to undergo a complete ownership and management restructuring.””
He paused.
“And Danielle was the reason I came here in the first place.””
Danielle stared at her father.
She hadn't known he was bringing those documents.
And when Marcus turned to the final page, she saw a name printed beneath the heading:
*THE CARTER FAMILY FOUNDATION.*
But the most shocking part wasn't the name.
May you like
It was the decision the board had made about who would take control of the entire property.
And Vanessa Whitmore was about to discover that the woman she had slapped was connected to something far bigger than she could possibly imagine.
