Chapter 5: The Reservation That Exposed Everything

Vanessa stood beside the conference room window, gripping her phone.

Outside, airport traffic moved beneath the hotel lights. Travelers hurried along the terminal sidewalks, dragging suitcases and checking their departure screens.

Inside, nobody was moving.

“What do you mean, reservation history?”” Vanessa demanded.

The woman on the phone introduced herself as Patricia from corporate guest relations.

“We're reviewing your account, Ms. Whitmore.””

“Why would you review my account?””

“Because of the incident reported at the property.””

Vanessa glanced toward Marcus.

“I'm the victim here.””

Patricia remained professional.

“That's one of the statements we're evaluating.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I've been a loyal guest for years. I spend a lot of money at your hotels.””

“We appreciate your business.””

“Then you should be treating me better than this.””

Patricia paused.

“Ms. Whitmore, our records show that you've received several complimentary upgrades and service adjustments during the past fourteen months.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“So?””

“We're also reviewing a series of complaints submitted by guests who reported being verbally mistreated in your presence.””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

“That's ridiculous.””

“Several of those complaints were closed without further investigation.””

“Because they were lies!””

Patricia continued.

“We're trying to establish whether the same staff members were involved in handling those complaints.””

Vanessa turned toward Richard.

He was sitting at the conference table, staring at his hands.

“Richard,” she whispered.

He didn't look up.

“Richard!””

Marcus heard her.

“Please finish your call, Ms. Whitmore.””

Vanessa looked at him angrily.

“You have no right to interfere with my private conversation.””

Marcus leaned back.

“I'm not interfering. I'm listening.””

She turned away again.

“Patricia, I want to speak to someone above you.””

“Of course. I'll arrange that.””

Vanessa ended the call.

For several seconds, she stood completely still.

Then she turned toward Richard.

“Tell them this is a misunderstanding.””

Richard looked up.

“I can't do that.””

“What?””

“I can't say something happened differently from what's on the recording.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You told me you would handle everything!””

“I thought I could resolve the situation.””

“You promised!””

Richard's face tightened.

“Lower your voice.””

Vanessa slammed her handbag onto the table.

“Don't you dare tell me to lower my voice!””

Danielle watched the exchange quietly.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Twenty minutes earlier, Vanessa had been shouting at her while Richard stood beside her.

Now they were arguing because neither wanted to take responsibility.

Marcus turned toward Evelyn.

“What's the status of the investigation?””

Evelyn opened her laptop.

“Corporate security has secured the lobby footage, the reception audio, and the employee communications from the relevant shift.””

“Good.””

“We've also found something concerning in the guest complaint system.””

“What?””

Evelyn looked toward Richard.

“Several complaints involving Ms. Whitmore were marked resolved without a documented investigation.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“So now I'm responsible for other people's problems?””

Evelyn didn't respond.

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Who closed those complaints?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Most were closed under Mr. Collins's management account.””

Richard's face turned red.

“Those were routine customer service matters.””

“Were the complaints investigated?”” Marcus asked.

“We didn't have enough information.””

“Did you interview the guests?””

Richard said nothing.

“Did you review the security footage?””

Still nothing.

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“Evelyn, I want the full record preserved.””

“Yes, sir.””

Vanessa paced toward the door.

“This is absurd. I'm leaving.””

The security director stepped aside.

“You're free to leave, ma'am. Nobody is preventing you.””

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

Then she stopped and turned toward Danielle.

“You must be very pleased with yourself.””

Danielle looked up.

“I'm not pleased about any of this.””

“You got your father involved, and now everybody's job is on the line.””

Danielle shifted Amara gently.

“I called my father because I needed help. I didn't ask you to slap me.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“People make mistakes.””

Danielle's voice was quiet.

“Then you should have apologized.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“What?””

“You could have apologized. You could have said you were wrong. But instead, you kept lying.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely embarrassed.

Then she lifted her chin.

“I don't apologize to people who disrespect me.””

Danielle held her gaze.

“That's exactly the problem.””

Vanessa turned toward the door.

Before she could leave, Evelyn spoke.

“Ms. Whitmore, there's another issue.””

Vanessa stopped.

“What now?””

Evelyn rotated her laptop.

“Your account is connected to a corporate travel arrangement through Whitmore Executive Consulting.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes. My company has a preferred guest agreement.””

“Actually, the agreement was established through a business account that received special pricing and complimentary services.””

“So?””

Evelyn scrolled.

“The agreement is currently under review because of a financial discrepancy.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“What discrepancy?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

He gave her permission to continue.

“The company appears to have received substantial benefits under a sponsorship program intended for families traveling for emergency medical care.””

Danielle looked up.

“Wait.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

Danielle stared at the laptop.

“Dad, is that the family travel program?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Your company received benefits from that program?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“My company provides consulting services. We qualify for several corporate benefits.””

Danielle shook her head.

“That's not what the program is for.””

Evelyn continued.

“Our preliminary review indicates that some of the complimentary accommodation credits may have been used for personal travel.””

Vanessa became defensive.

“I don't know anything about that.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Vanessa, perhaps you should let them finish.””

She turned toward him.

“Don't you start!””

Marcus raised his hand.

“Enough.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Do we know who authorized the credits?””

“Not yet. The finance department is tracing the approvals.””

“Then find out.””

Evelyn nodded.

Danielle looked at her father.

“Dad, I don't want this investigation to become about getting even with her.””

Marcus softened.

“It isn't.””

“I want the program protected. If families are supposed to receive emergency accommodation, the money needs to go where it's meant to go.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“That's why I wanted you leading it.””

He turned toward Evelyn.

“Make that the priority. If anyone has misused foundation resources, we need to know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is getting completely out of control.””

Then she looked toward Danielle.

“You don't even understand what you're accusing me of.””

Danielle answered calmly.

“I haven't accused you of anything. We're looking at the records.””

Vanessa's phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a text message.

She opened it.

Her face changed immediately.

*Your company account has been temporarily suspended pending an internal review. Please contact the finance department.*

She read it again.

Then she called someone.

“James? It's Vanessa. What's happening with our account?””

A man's voice answered.

“Where are you?””

“At the Grand Meridian.””

“Get somewhere private.””

“Why?””

“Vanessa, the finance team found irregular payments connected to your account.””

Her stomach tightened.

“What payments?””

“Several invoices don't match the services recorded.””

She glanced toward Evelyn.

“Who is reviewing them?””

“Carter Hospitality's internal audit team.””

Vanessa's hand began shaking.

“Can they prove anything?””

There was a long silence.

Then James answered.

“They've already found something much worse.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“What?””

“The invoices have your electronic approval.””

She ended the call without saying goodbye.

Richard looked at her.

“What happened?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus stood up.

“Evelyn, continue the review. I want the finance director involved.””

“Yes, sir.””

He turned toward Danielle.

“Let's get you and Amara settled. You've had enough for one evening.””

Danielle nodded.

As they left the conference room, she heard Vanessa speaking urgently behind them.

“Richard, you have to help me.””

Richard answered in a whisper.

“I can't.””

“You said everything was fine!””

“I didn't know about the money!””

Marcus stopped at the doorway.

He didn't turn around.

But he spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.

“Apparently, this problem started long before my daughter walked through that lobby.””

May you like

Then he walked away.

And for the first time that evening, Vanessa realized the slap might be the smallest part of the trouble she had created.
