Chapter 8: The Secret Written Into Her Daughter's Papers

At 10:42 p.m., Danielle finally understood that the evening wasn't going to end quietly.

The hotel investigation had uncovered questionable payments.

The board had suspended Anthony.

Richard was preparing to blame his former business partner.

And Michael had admitted signing documents involving their unborn daughter.

But the birth certificate comment still troubled her.

She looked toward Evelyn.

“Can you help me find out what documents were filed before Amara was born?””

Evelyn nodded.

“We can request the original records through the appropriate channels.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“I'll have our legal department coordinate with the county records office.””

Danielle shook her head.

“I want to understand what happened before anyone starts making decisions for me.””

Marcus put the phone down.

“All right.””

Evelyn opened a new file.

“Do you have the original hospital paperwork?””

Danielle nodded.

“My medical folder is in my tote.””

She walked to the sofa and retrieved it.

Inside were discharge papers, insurance documents, vaccination records, and the paperwork from Amara's birth.

She placed the folder on the table.

Evelyn carefully examined the documents.

“Everything looks normal so far.””

Danielle pointed toward a page.

“This is the original birth registration.””

Evelyn read it.

“Your name is listed as the mother. Michael is listed as the father.””

“That's correct.””

“Did Michael sign this?””

“Yes. At the hospital.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why?””

Danielle looked at him.

“Because he was there for the first few hours after Amara was born.””

Her voice softened.

“He held her. He told me she had my eyes. He promised he'd come back the following morning.””

Marcus looked away.

He remembered that day.

He remembered waiting outside the hospital room while Danielle held her newborn daughter.

He remembered Michael leaving with an excuse about needing to collect something from home.

He hadn't returned.

Danielle turned another page.

“What's this?””

Evelyn examined the document.

It was a separate authorization form.

The title read:

*FAMILY BENEFICIARY AND EMERGENCY ACCOMMODATION CONSENT.*

Danielle frowned.

“I've never seen this before.””

Marcus took the paper.

“Where did you get it?””

“It's in the hospital folder.””

Evelyn looked at the bottom.

“There are two signatures.””

Danielle leaned closer.

One belonged to Michael.

The other belonged to Anthony.

Her eyes widened.

“Why would my uncle sign something involving Amara's birth?””

Marcus studied the form.

“That's what we need to establish.””

Evelyn turned the page.

There was a reference number and an attached schedule of benefits.

The document appeared to authorize the use of Amara's identity for a family accommodation arrangement.

But the wording was unusual.

It didn't simply list Amara as a beneficiary.

It gave an outside company permission to submit accommodation claims under her family registration.

Danielle felt sick.

“Dad, what does this mean?””

Marcus read the paragraph again.

“It's not a normal foundation authorization.””

Evelyn nodded.

“The wording suggests someone attempted to create a separate beneficiary arrangement.””

“Was it legal?”” Danielle asked.

“I can't determine that from this document alone. Legal counsel will need to review the original submission.””

Danielle sat down.

“Why would they need Amara's name?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“Because a newborn can qualify a family for certain emergency accommodation benefits.””

Danielle stared at him.

“You mean they used her identity to make the reservations look eligible?””

“That's one possibility.””

Evelyn checked the reference number.

“I can trace this through the internal records.””

She typed quickly.

A few moments later, the result appeared.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

“This authorization was used to establish a separate account.””

“Where?””

“Under the foundation's family support division.””

Danielle frowned.

“That's impossible. I never approved a separate account.””

Evelyn searched further.

“The account was created under the name Carter Family Emergency Trust.””

Marcus stood.

“I've never heard of that trust.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“It's registered as a separate administrative account.””

“Who controls it?””

She checked the records.

“Anthony Carter and Michael Carter were listed as authorized representatives.””

Danielle covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Her uncle and former husband had created an account using her daughter's identity.

An account she hadn't known existed.

Marcus paced toward the window.

“This is beyond a hotel dispute.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

“Contact legal counsel immediately. We need to determine whether this account was ever authorized by the foundation's board.””

“I'll do that.””

Danielle looked at the document.

“Dad, I want to know how much money went through it.””

Evelyn searched the financial system.

The result appeared.

<badge color="danger">Under investigation</badge>

<title size="2xl" color="default" tabularNums={true}>$412,750</title> <text color="secondary" size="xs">Preliminary total of transactions associated with the separate account.</text>

Danielle stared at the number.

“Four hundred thousand dollars?””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Is that confirmed?””

“It's the total recorded in the system. We're still verifying the underlying transactions.””

Danielle slowly shook her head.

“Families were being denied help while more than four hundred thousand dollars was moving through an account named after my daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

Then her phone rang again.

This time, it was Michael.

She answered.

“Why are you calling?””

“Danielle, I need you to listen.””

“I'm listening.””

“Anthony is looking for me.””

Marcus moved closer.

“Where are you?””

Michael hesitated.

“I'm at home.””

“Are you alone?””

“Yes.””

“Then stay there. Our legal team will contact you.””

Michael's breathing became faster.

“I can't stay here.””

“Why?””

“Because Anthony knows I talked to you.””

Danielle's stomach tightened.

“How?””

“He called me twenty minutes ago.””

“What did he say?””

Michael swallowed.

“He said I needed to remember who helped me when I had nothing.””

Marcus took the phone.

“Michael, did he threaten you?””

“He told me I had until midnight to destroy the documents.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What documents?””

“The original account authorization. The payment schedules. Everything.””

“Do you have them?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Michael hesitated.

“In a storage unit.””

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

“Do not touch anything. Our legal team will arrange a proper transfer and preservation of the records.””

Michael sounded desperate.

“You don't understand. Anthony isn't the only person involved.””

Danielle took the phone back.

“Who else?””

“Vanessa.””

“We already know about Vanessa.””

“No. You don't understand. She wasn't just receiving hotel credits.””

“What was she doing?””

“She was recruiting people to make reservations under false family circumstances.””

Danielle closed her eyes.

Michael continued.

“Anthony told me that if the system ever got audited, the hotel would appear to be providing emergency accommodation to hundreds of families. But the rooms were actually being used by people connected to Vanessa's company.””

Danielle felt tears gather in her eyes.

“How many families were affected?””

“I don't know.””

“Michael!””

“I don't know, Danielle!””

His voice cracked.

“I'm sorry.””

She looked at Amara.

“Did you know about the fake account?””

“I helped Anthony open it.””

Danielle's expression hardened.

“Then you were part of it.””

“I know.””

“You signed the documents.””

“Yes.””

“You took the money.””

“Yes.””

There was a long silence.

Then Michael said something unexpected.

“I have a copy of the original instruction Anthony sent me.””

“What instruction?””

“The one explaining why Amara's name was needed.””

Danielle's heart began beating faster.

“Read it.””

Michael hesitated.

Then he read the message.

Use the newborn beneficiary designation. It will allow the accommodation requests to qualify under the family emergency program. Do not involve Danielle until the account is fully established.

Danielle felt as if someone had struck her.

Marcus slowly took the phone.

“Michael, preserve that message. Do not delete anything.””

“I will.””

“Where is the original?””

“In my email archive.””

“Send it to the legal department.””

Michael agreed.

Then the call ended.

Danielle sat silently.

Marcus placed his hand on her shoulder.

“I'm sorry.””

She looked at him.

“Dad, they used my daughter.””

“I know.””

“They used her name to steal money from families.””

“We're going to establish exactly what happened.””

Danielle wiped her face.

“I don't want to hear another explanation from Uncle Anthony.””

“You won't have to.””

Evelyn's laptop chimed.

She looked at the screen.

“Mr. Carter, the legal department has confirmed that the separate trust was never approved by the board.””

Marcus nodded.

“Good. That's important.””

“But there's something else.””

He turned.

“What?””

“The trust's registered mailing address is not Anthony's office.””

“Whose address?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she turned the laptop around.

The address belonged to the Grand Meridian Airport Hotel.

More specifically, it was the hotel's executive office.

Richard Collins's office.

Danielle stared at the screen.

“So Richard knew about the trust?””

Evelyn nodded.

“His office received correspondence from the account.””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Find out whether he signed for anything.””

Evelyn opened the delivery records.

One document appeared.

It was a courier receipt.

The signature was Richard Collins's.

And the date was the day Danielle had originally booked her stay at the hotel.
