Chapter 2: The Man Who Told Her Not to Leave

Twenty minutes.
That was all Naomi's father had asked her to wait.
But the next twenty minutes felt longer than the previous twenty-nine years of her life.
She sat on a cream-colored sofa near the reception desk, gently rocking her newborn daughter.
The lobby was enormous.
Marble columns stretched toward a ceiling decorated with gold accents. Soft instrumental music played beneath the distant ringing of slot machines. Guests moved through the space carrying designer shopping bags, rolling suitcases, and glasses of champagne.
Everything looked beautiful.
Except the way Naomi was being treated.
Gregory stood near the reception counter, speaking quietly with two security officers.
Vanessa had returned to a velvet chair beside the lobby bar.
She was scrolling through her phone, occasionally glancing toward Naomi.
Each time their eyes met, Vanessa smiled.
Naomi tried to focus on her daughter.
“It's okay, baby,” she whispered.
“Mommy's right here.””
The little girl made a soft sound beneath the white blanket.
Naomi kissed her forehead.
Her name was Amara.
She was only seven weeks old.
And she had already spent more time in hospitals than Naomi wanted to remember.
The birth had been difficult. Naomi's recovery had taken longer than expected, and the first month of motherhood had been filled with sleepless nights and unexpected medical expenses.
Her father had offered to pay for everything.
But Naomi had refused most of his help.
She wanted to build a life where she didn't have to depend on his money.
Her father had respected that decision.
Mostly.
But he had never stopped watching over her.
A security officer approached.
“Ma'am?””
Naomi looked up.
“Yes?””
“Management has asked us to escort you outside.””
Naomi tightened her arms around Amara.
“I'm waiting for my father.””
The officer glanced toward Gregory.
“He said you've been asked to leave.””
“I heard him.””
“Then please cooperate.””
Naomi took a breath.
“Sir, I'm sitting quietly. My baby is asleep. I'm not bothering anybody. Why can't I wait?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“I don't make the rules.””
“Neither do I.””
For a moment, he seemed unsure what to say.
Then Gregory approached.
“What's the problem?””
The officer stepped aside.
“She says she's waiting for someone.””
Gregory looked directly at Naomi.
“I've already explained that you need to leave.””
“And I've already told you my father is coming.””
Gregory gave a humorless laugh.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“Is he a guest here?””
Naomi hesitated.
“I don't know if he's checked in yet.””
Gregory exchanged a glance with the security officer.
“Then he can meet you outside.””
Naomi shook her head.
“He told me to wait here.””
Gregory leaned closer.
“Let me make something very clear. This is a luxury property. We have standards to maintain. We cannot allow disturbances in the lobby.””
Naomi looked around.
A man was laughing loudly at the bar.
Another guest was arguing with a receptionist about a room upgrade.
A couple had spilled champagne near the entrance.
But somehow, the woman holding a sleeping newborn was the disturbance.
“I'm not disturbing anyone,” she said.
Gregory's voice dropped.
“You are now.””
Vanessa approached, holding her handbag.
“Gregory, is she still here?””
“I'm handling it.””
Vanessa looked at Naomi.
“Your father must be taking his time.””
Naomi said nothing.
Vanessa leaned toward the baby.
“Such a pretty little thing. It's unfortunate her mother can't behave.””
Naomi immediately stood.
“Don't talk about my daughter.””
Vanessa raised both hands.
“Oh, there she goes again.””
Gregory stepped forward.
“Ma'am, sit down.””
“Don't speak about my child.””
“I'm warning you.””
Naomi's voice trembled, but she didn't move backward.
“I'm asking you to leave us alone.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is exactly why people like you don't belong in places like this. Everything becomes an argument.””
A woman near the elevators looked over.
“Didn't you hit her?””
Vanessa spun around.
“Excuse me?””
“I saw you earlier. You slapped her.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
Gregory immediately intervened.
“Ladies, please. We are not going to turn this into a public spectacle.””
The woman shook her head.
“Then perhaps your employee shouldn't be protecting the person who assaulted another guest.””
Gregory's expression changed.
“I'm the manager here. I know how to handle my property.””
The woman took out her phone.
“Good. Then I'll make sure corporate knows how you handle it.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Go ahead. Nobody cares.””
Naomi sat back down.
She didn't want another argument.
She wanted her father.
And she wanted to understand why this woman had hated her before they'd even exchanged names.
A few minutes later, her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
*DAD: I'm downstairs. Two minutes. Stay where you are.*
Naomi read it twice.
Then she looked toward the entrance.
Gregory noticed.
“Has your ride arrived?””
“My father is here.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Finally. I hope he brought enough money to pay for all this drama.””
Naomi looked at her.
“You really don't know when to stop, do you?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Excuse me?””
“You slapped me. You lied about it. You watched him try to throw me out with a newborn. And you're still talking.””
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“Watch your mouth.””
“Or what?””
Gregory stepped between them.
“That's enough!””
At that exact moment, the main entrance opened.
A tall Black man in his late fifties walked into the lobby.
He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, a white shirt, and a dark burgundy tie. His hair was closely cropped, with silver at the temples. A gold watch rested beneath his cuff.
Two men in dark suits followed several steps behind him.
He wasn't rushing.
He wasn't shouting.
But the receptionist immediately stood straighter.
A casino employee walking past the entrance stopped and whispered something to a colleague.
The man scanned the lobby.
Then he saw Naomi.
His expression changed.
“Baby?””
Naomi stood.
“Dad.””
He crossed the floor in seconds.
When he reached her, he didn't look at Gregory or Vanessa.
He looked at his daughter.
Then at the red mark on her cheek.
His jaw tightened.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
He gently touched the side of her face without pressing against it.
“Who did this?””
Naomi pointed.
“That woman.””
Her father slowly turned.
Vanessa looked him up and down.
Then she smiled.
“Are you the father?””
The man didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Gregory.
“And you're the manager?””
Gregory nodded.
“That's correct. Can I help you?””
The older man studied him.
“I'm Daniel Carter.””
Gregory's face remained neutral.
“Nice to meet you.””
Daniel glanced at the security officers.
“Who authorized you to remove my daughter?””
Gregory folded his arms.
“She was involved in an altercation with another guest.””
Daniel looked at Naomi.
“Is that what happened?””
“No, Dad. She slapped me. Then she told you—” Naomi stopped herself and corrected her words.
“She told them I attacked her.””
Daniel's eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“Did you strike my daughter?””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I defended myself.””
“From what?””
“She was walking too close to me.””
Daniel looked at the baby.
Then at Naomi.
Then back at Vanessa.
“You slapped a woman holding a newborn because she walked too close to you?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“It's not that simple.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then let's make it simple.””
He turned toward Gregory.
“I want the security footage preserved. Every camera covering this lobby, the entrance, and the reception desk.””
Gregory stiffened.
“Sir, I don't think that's necessary.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because we already have a statement from the guest.””
“Which guest?””
“Miss Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa again.
“Is that your name?””
“Yes.””
“Good. We'll make sure it's recorded correctly.””
Gregory shifted his weight.
“Sir, I'm not sure who you think you are, but I manage this property.””
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Then you should know better than to let someone assault a guest and then punish the person who was assaulted.””
Gregory glanced toward the entrance.
A senior employee was now approaching.
His name was Marcus Bell.
He had worked in casino hospitality for nearly twenty years and had served as the hotel's director of operations for the past six.
The moment Marcus recognized Daniel, he stopped.
His eyes widened.
“Mr. Carter?””
Gregory turned.
“Marcus, I'm dealing with a situation.””
Marcus didn't answer him.
He walked directly toward Daniel.
“Sir, I wasn't expecting you until tomorrow morning.””
Daniel gave a small nod.
“Plans changed.””
Marcus looked at Naomi's cheek.
Then at the baby.
His face tightened.
“Is everything all right?””
Daniel pointed toward Gregory.
“You tell me.””
Marcus looked confused.
Gregory cleared his throat.
“Marcus, this woman was creating a disturbance. We asked her to leave, but she refused.””
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus looked at Naomi.
“Ma'am, did something happen?””
Naomi nodded.
“Your guest slapped me. Your manager watched her do it and then told security to remove me.””
Marcus slowly turned toward Gregory.
“Is that true?””
Gregory's lips tightened.
“That's not how I'd describe it.””
Daniel checked his watch.
“Marcus, I don't want descriptions. I want facts.””
Marcus nodded.
“Understood, sir.””
May you like
Then he looked at Gregory and said something that made the manager's face lose its color.
“Gregory, do you know who you've just ordered out of this building?””
