Chapter 3: The Name on the Ownership Documents

Gregory stared at Marcus.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Daniel, whose expression remained unreadable.
Then he looked at Naomi.
“Miss Carter, I'm very sorry this happened.””
Naomi nodded faintly.
Gregory gave a nervous laugh.
“Marcus, this is getting ridiculous. I was trying to protect the hotel's reputation.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“By removing an assaulted woman?””
“By managing a difficult situation.””
“Did you review the security footage?””
Gregory hesitated.
“No.””
“Did you speak to the witnesses?””
“Not formally.””
“Did you ask the guest what happened before deciding she was responsible?””
Gregory glanced toward Vanessa.
“Miss Whitmore gave me her account.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And you witnessed the entire incident yourself?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Yes.””
Marcus waited.
Then he asked, “Did you slap Naomi Carter?””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“I already explained what happened.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I defended myself.””
Marcus looked toward the security desk.
“Please have the footage preserved immediately.””
One of the officers nodded and walked away.
Vanessa laughed.
“You people are acting as if I committed a crime.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“You struck my daughter.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“And you keep saying that as if I should be afraid of you.””
Daniel studied her.
“You shouldn't be afraid of me. You should be concerned about what happens when the truth is documented.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Unbelievable.””
She turned toward Gregory.
“Can we please get this over with? I have a reservation upstairs.””
Gregory nodded.
“Of course, Miss Whitmore.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Gregory, don't move this situation upstairs. We're reviewing it here.””
Gregory frowned.
“Marcus, I can handle a guest complaint.””
“Then handle it properly.””
Daniel glanced at his daughter.
“Naomi, how are you feeling?””
“I'm okay.””
“Are you sure?””
She looked down at Amara.
“I'm more worried about her than me.””
Daniel gently adjusted the edge of the baby's blanket.
“She's fine. You're both fine. That's what matters.””
Naomi looked at him.
“Dad, I didn't want to call you over something like this.””
He shook his head.
“Don't ever apologize for calling me when someone hurts you.””
“I know you have meetings.””
“Meetings can wait.””
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
“Can we get my daughter somewhere comfortable? She needs a quiet place to feed the baby.””
“Absolutely,” Marcus replied.
Gregory immediately interrupted.
“Sir, we have private seating available, but access is generally reserved for our premium guests.””
Daniel slowly turned toward him.
“Did you just tell my daughter she isn't entitled to a seat?””
Gregory flushed.
“That's not what I meant.””
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
“Gregory, stop talking.””
But Vanessa had heard enough.
She stepped forward, her heels clicking against the patterned marble floor.
“This is absurd. She walked into this hotel looking for trouble, and now everybody is treating her like royalty because her father arrived in a suit.””
Naomi looked at her.
“I never asked for special treatment.””
Vanessa pointed toward Daniel.
“Then why is he making all these demands?””
Daniel answered calmly.
“Because someone needs to make sure your actions have consequences.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think you can intimidate me?””
“No.””
“Then stop acting like you own the place.””
The lobby went quiet.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Gregory looked at Marcus.
Naomi stared at her father.
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
He simply asked Vanessa a question.
“What makes you think I don't?””
Vanessa blinked.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Gregory let out an uncomfortable laugh.
“Sir, I think there's been a misunderstanding. The Grand Meridian is operated by Meridian Hospitality Group. It's a major property with a board of directors and several investment partners.””
Daniel nodded.
“I'm aware.””
“Then you'll understand that decisions concerning this hotel aren't made by individual guests.””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He removed a slim black business card and handed it to Marcus.
Marcus glanced at it.
His expression changed immediately.
He looked at Daniel, then back at the card.
“Mr. Carter…”
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus straightened.
“Of course, sir.””
Naomi watched them.
She knew her father was wealthy.
She knew he owned several businesses.
She knew he had spent much of his career in hospitality and commercial real estate.
But he rarely discussed the details.
When she was growing up, he had driven an ordinary car, attended her school events, and insisted she learn how to manage money before she was old enough to understand how much he had.
He had never wanted her to feel that her last name was a shortcut through life.
Now, watching Marcus stand differently in his presence, Naomi began to understand that there was something her father had never fully explained.
Gregory looked at Marcus.
“What does that card say?””
Marcus swallowed.
“It's Mr. Carter's executive identification.””
“So?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Gregory, Mr. Carter is the chairman of the investment group that owns the controlling interest in this property.””
Vanessa stopped smiling.
Gregory stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel slipped his hands into his pockets.
“Continue.””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“His company acquired the controlling interest in Meridian Hospitality Group's Las Vegas portfolio two years ago. He is also the principal shareholder of the holding company that owns this hotel.””
Gregory's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa looked from Marcus to Daniel.
Then to Naomi.
“You're saying…”
Daniel finished the sentence.
“I'm saying this hotel is part of my investment portfolio.””
The silence that followed was almost deafening.
Naomi's fingers tightened around the diaper tote.
She turned toward her father.
“Dad, you own this hotel?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Not personally, sweetheart. My company does.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
He gave her a gentle smile.
“You never asked which hotels we had investments in.””
Naomi stared at him.
She had known he was successful.
She hadn't known he had that kind of influence.
Gregory stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, I sincerely apologize. If I had known—”
Daniel raised one hand.
“Stop.””
Gregory froze.
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
“You're apologizing because you recognize my name. Not because you understand what you did.””
Gregory swallowed.
“Sir, I assure you—”
“You didn't know who my daughter was. You didn't know what she owned. You didn't know whether she had money, status, or influence. And you decided she wasn't worth protecting.””
Gregory's face reddened.
“That's not fair.””
“Isn't it?””
Daniel turned toward Marcus.
“Get me the incident report.””
“Immediately.””
“And the footage.””
“Already requested.””
“Good.””
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.
She took a step backward.
“I think there's been enough drama for one evening. I'm going upstairs.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Not yet.””
She frowned.
“Excuse me?””
“You made a statement about my daughter. You made an accusation. You struck her. I want your account documented before you leave.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“You can't detain me.””
“I haven't asked anyone to detain you.””
“Then I'm leaving.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Miss Whitmore, we'd appreciate your cooperation while we investigate the incident.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Do you know how much money I spend at this hotel?””
Marcus remained silent.
“I'm one of your most important guests. I have a suite upstairs, and I host private events here. You should be thanking me for my business.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Is that relevant to what happened?””
“No, sir.””
“Then why is she using it as an excuse?””
Marcus shook his head.
“It isn't.””
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
Gregory moved closer to her.
“Miss Whitmore, perhaps we should all calm down.””
Daniel watched him carefully.
“Gregory, I have one more question.””
“Yes, sir?””
“Why did you refuse to review the security footage when my daughter asked you to?””
Gregory hesitated.
“I was trying to resolve the matter quickly.””
“By removing the victim?””
“I made a judgment based on the information available.””
“Whose information?””
Gregory looked toward Vanessa.
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
He turned to Marcus.
“I want the footage, the incident report, and the names of every employee who witnessed this. Nobody is to delete or alter anything.””
Marcus nodded.
“I'll make sure of it.””
Naomi finally spoke.
“Dad?””
He turned immediately.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Can we please stop? I don't want Amara growing up surrounded by people arguing.””
Daniel's expression softened.
“Of course.””
He looked toward Marcus.
“Please arrange a private room for my daughter. She needs to rest.””
“Right away.””
Marcus gestured to a nearby employee, who hurried toward the elevators.
Naomi followed her father, but before they could leave, Gregory called out.
“Mr. Carter?””
Daniel stopped.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
Gregory glanced toward Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“I think you should know that Miss Whitmore has a close relationship with one of the hotel's senior executives.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Which executive?””
Gregory hesitated.
Vanessa looked sharply at him.
“Gregory, don't.””
But Gregory continued.
“She's been staying here regularly because of her relationship with—”
Marcus suddenly interrupted.
“Gregory. Be careful.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
Then he said something that made Naomi stop walking.
“Because the executive Vanessa has been seeing is the same person who approved Gregory's promotion.””
Naomi looked at her father.
Vanessa's face had gone pale.
And Daniel, for the first time that evening, looked genuinely concerned.
Because the slap in the lobby might not have been an isolated incident.
May you like
It might have been the beginning of something much bigger.
*And the name Marcus was about to reveal would change everything.*
