Chapter 4: The Executive Behind Vanessa

“Who is he?””
Daniel Carter's question cut through the lobby.
Marcus Bell glanced toward Gregory, then toward Vanessa.
Nobody spoke.
Naomi stood beside her father, holding little Amara against her chest. She could feel the tension in Daniel's shoulders. His voice remained calm, but she knew him well enough to recognize when something had changed.
This was no longer simply about a woman slapping his daughter.
Someone inside his company might have helped create an environment where employees believed they could mistreat people without consequences.
Marcus finally answered.
“His name is Richard Lawson. He's the regional vice president of operations.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Richard Lawson?””
“Yes, sir.””
“And Vanessa Whitmore is involved with him?””
Marcus hesitated.
“That's what I've been told.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That's none of your business.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Your personal relationships aren't my concern. Your conduct toward my daughter is.””
“Then deal with that. Leave Richard out of it.””
Gregory cleared his throat.
“Mr. Carter, Richard has been instrumental in improving this hotel's performance. He's responsible for several successful operational initiatives.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Is that why you were afraid to challenge Vanessa?””
Gregory's face tightened.
“I wasn't afraid of anyone.””
“Then why did you believe her without investigating?””
“I was managing a situation.””
“You've used that phrase three times. It doesn't explain anything.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Richard will sort this out.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I'm sure he'll have an opportunity to explain himself.””
She took out her phone.
“I'm calling him now.””
Nobody stopped her.
She pressed a contact and placed the phone against her ear.
“Richard? I need you downstairs. Right now.””
A pause.
Then she added, “There's a situation with Daniel Carter.””
Her expression changed.
She listened.
“What do you mean you know?””
Another pause.
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
“Fine. Just come down.””
She ended the call.
Gregory approached her.
“What did he say?””
“He's coming.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Sir, perhaps we should move to the executive conference room.””
Daniel nodded.
“Good idea. But first, I want Naomi to have somewhere comfortable to sit.””
A hotel employee approached with a wheelchair, but Naomi shook her head.
“I'm okay. I can walk.””
Daniel gently touched her shoulder.
“You don't have to prove anything to anybody tonight.””
“I know, Dad.””
He smiled.
“Then let somebody help you for once.””
A female employee named Patricia approached.
“Miss Carter, we've prepared a private family lounge. There's a comfortable chair, a changing station, and everything you might need for the baby.””
Naomi looked at her.
“Thank you.””
Patricia smiled.
“Of course.””
As Naomi followed her toward the elevators, she heard Vanessa speak behind her.
“Don't think this is over.””
Naomi stopped.
She turned around.
For the first time, she didn't look frightened.
“I don't think it is,” she replied.
Then she walked away.
The private lounge was quieter than the lobby.
Soft lamps illuminated cream-colored walls. A small refrigerator stood beside a cabinet filled with bottled water, baby wipes, and other essentials.
Naomi settled into an armchair and carefully adjusted Amara's blanket.
Patricia brought her a glass of water.
“Is there anything else you need?””
Naomi shook her head.
“I'm okay. Thank you for being kind.””
Patricia hesitated.
Then she lowered her voice.
“I saw what happened downstairs.””
Naomi looked up.
“You did?””
“I was working near reception. I wanted to help, but Gregory told everyone not to get involved.””
Naomi's expression softened.
“Why?””
Patricia looked toward the closed door.
“Gregory has been difficult with employees lately. Especially when certain guests are involved.””
“Vanessa?””
Patricia nodded.
“She comes here frequently. She knows Richard Lawson, and everyone knows he protects her.””
Naomi frowned.
“Does she treat other people like that?””
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
“Let's just say you're not the first person she's spoken to that way.””
Naomi adjusted her daughter.
“Has anyone reported her?””
“Some people have. Nothing ever happens.””
“Why?””
Patricia sighed.
“Because complaints disappear.””
Naomi stared at her.
“Disappear?””
Patricia nodded.
“Employees who complain suddenly find themselves moved to different shifts. Some have lost their positions. One receptionist transferred properties after Vanessa accused her of stealing a bracelet that was later found in her own suite.””
Naomi felt a chill.
“Did anyone investigate?””
“Not properly.””
Patricia looked toward the door again.
“I shouldn't be telling you this.””
Naomi reached for her hand.
“You haven't done anything wrong.””
Patricia gave a tired smile.
“Sometimes it feels like telling the truth is the easiest way to lose your job.””
Naomi understood that feeling more than she wanted to admit.
Before she could respond, Daniel appeared at the doorway.
“Everything all right?””
Patricia stepped back.
“Yes, sir.””
Daniel looked at Naomi.
“Richard is here.””
Naomi glanced down at Amara.
“Do you want me there?””
“No, sweetheart. You need to rest. I'll handle the business side.””
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
“Please don't make this about money.””
Daniel paused.
Then he nodded.
“I won't.””
He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“This is about accountability.””
Back in the executive conference room, Richard Lawson was already waiting.
He was a tall white man in his early fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and an expensive navy suit. His expression suggested that he had been interrupted during something important.
Vanessa stood beside him.
Gregory sat near the end of the conference table.
Marcus remained standing.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Daniel. I understand there's been some confusion.””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“Sit down, Richard.””
Richard frowned.
“I'd prefer to understand what's happening first.””
“Then sit down and listen.””
For a moment, Richard looked offended.
But he eventually took the chair opposite Daniel.
Vanessa placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Richard, this has been humiliating.””
Richard looked at her.
“I know, sweetheart.””
Daniel watched the exchange.
“Did you ask her what happened?””
“Vanessa told me.””
“And you believed her?””
“She's my partner.””
Daniel leaned back.
“That wasn't my question.””
Richard sighed.
“Daniel, we're both experienced businesspeople. Let's not turn a personal disagreement into an organizational crisis.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Play the footage.””
Marcus connected a laptop to the conference room screen.
The first camera showed the lobby.
Naomi appeared walking slowly toward the reception area with Amara in her arms.
Vanessa approached from the opposite direction.
The two women passed each other.
Then Vanessa turned.
The footage showed her raising her hand and striking Naomi across the face.
There was no ambiguity.
No accidental contact.
No confusion.
She slapped her.
The recording continued.
Naomi stepped backward, holding her baby.
Vanessa pointed at her.
Gregory approached.
The next camera angle showed him listening to Vanessa before turning toward Naomi.
Then he gestured toward the exit.
Richard stared at the screen.
Vanessa shifted in her chair.
“That's taken out of context.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“What context makes that acceptable?””
“She was disrespectful.””
“Show me.””
Marcus paused the recording.
“There's audio from the lobby camera system as well.””
He played the recording.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
“People like you shouldn't be in this hotel.””
Richard slowly turned toward her.
“Vanessa?””
She looked away.
Daniel folded his hands.
“Now that you've seen what happened, do you still believe this was a misunderstanding?””
Richard cleared his throat.
“I can see that the situation was handled poorly.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Handled poorly?””
Richard looked toward Gregory.
“Gregory should have followed the proper procedure.””
Gregory's head snapped up.
“Richard, you told me—”
“Not now, Gregory.””
Daniel noticed the exchange.
“Told you what?””
Nobody answered.
Richard straightened his tie.
“Daniel, I think we should discuss this privately.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. We will discuss it with everyone who participated in it.””
Richard's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
Then he quickly turned it facedown.
Daniel noticed.
“Something important?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Bring up the incident reports involving Vanessa Whitmore.””
Marcus hesitated.
Richard's expression hardened.
“I don't think that's necessary.””
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Why?””
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus opened another file.
And when the first report appeared on the screen, Richard's face changed.
It wasn't one complaint.
May you like
There were twelve.
And every single one had been closed without a proper investigation.
