Chapter 8: The Uncle Who Smiled at the Family Dinner

Daniel didn't sleep that night.
Neither did Naomi.
At 7:15 the following morning, the Grand Meridian's executive conference room had become the center of an investigation involving millions of dollars, missing documents, and a family secret that had remained buried for years.
Evelyn sat beside Samuel.
Naomi was in the private lounge with Amara, listening through a secure video connection.
Daniel stood near the windows.
Marcus entered carrying a thick folder.
“Mr. Carter, we've located the original transfer records.””
Daniel turned.
“Where?””
“In the hotel's archived accounting system. They were attached to a vendor reconciliation file that was never properly closed.””
“Can you identify the beneficiary?””
Marcus opened the folder.
“The funds moved through three companies before reaching a private investment account.””
Samuel leaned forward.
“Whose account?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Anthony Carter's.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For years, he had trusted his older brother with almost everything.
Anthony had been there when their father died.
He had helped Daniel raise Naomi after her mother passed away.
He had attended school meetings, family celebrations, and holidays.
He had even been the first person to hold Amara after she was born.
Now his name was appearing on documents connected to an eighteen-million-dollar fraud.
Daniel looked at Samuel.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Several times. Richard intercepted the messages.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“And you never found another way?””
Samuel looked down.
“No. I made mistakes.””
Evelyn spoke gently.
“Both of you did.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Mother, he let me believe you were dead.””
“And you let your brother manage parts of the company without independent oversight.””
Daniel looked wounded.
Evelyn continued.
“I'm not defending Samuel. I'm reminding you that this family has been too comfortable confusing love with trust.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus placed another document on the table.
“There's something else.””
Daniel looked at it.
“What now?””
“The original ownership records show that the funds were transferred under an authorization connected to the family trust.””
Samuel leaned closer.
“That's impossible. The trust required two signatures.””
Marcus nodded.
“Exactly.””
He pointed to the bottom of the document.
“One signature belongs to Anthony. The other belongs to Daniel Carter.””
Daniel froze.
Naomi, watching through the screen, leaned closer.
“Dad?””
Daniel stared at the signature.
It looked like his.
The same curved D.
The same unusual ending to his surname.
But he hadn't signed it.
“I never approved this.””
Samuel examined the document.
“Then someone forged your signature.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Find the original.””
Marcus nodded.
“I'm already working on it.””
Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
*ANTHONY: Family dinner tonight. Seven o'clock. Just you, me, and Naomi. We need to settle this before it gets ugly.*
Daniel showed the message to Samuel.
Samuel shook his head.
“Don't go.””
Daniel looked toward the screen.
Naomi spoke.
“Dad, I think we should.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
“Uncle Anthony needs to explain himself.””
“He can explain himself to the investigators.””
Naomi looked down at Amara.
“Dad, he knows where I live. He knows my schedule. He knows everything about our family.””
Daniel's expression softened.
“I won't let him near you.””
“Then don't let him control the situation by frightening us.””
Samuel leaned forward.
“She has a point.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You're not helping.””
Samuel nodded.
“I know. But Anthony will become more dangerous if he thinks we're getting close.””
Daniel looked at Naomi through the screen.
“Sweetheart, I'm not risking you.””
Naomi took a breath.
“Then let me stay somewhere secure. But don't pretend this will disappear if we avoid him.””
Daniel finally nodded.
“Fine. But you're not attending that dinner.””
At 6:45 that evening, Anthony Carter arrived at the Grand Meridian.
He wore a dark blue suit, polished shoes, and a familiar smile.
He carried a gift bag.
Inside was an expensive silver baby bracelet.
He approached the reception desk.
“Good evening. I'm here to see my brother.””
The receptionist checked his name.
“Mr. Carter, they're expecting you.””
Anthony smiled.
“Wonderful.””
As he walked toward the elevators, he noticed two security officers standing near the entrance to the executive floor.
He recognized one of them.
“Everything all right?””
The officer nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
Anthony continued walking.
But his smile faded.
He had never seen security stationed there before.
Daniel waited in the conference room.
Samuel sat across from him.
Evelyn remained in the adjoining room with Marcus.
Naomi watched through the secure video connection.
When Anthony entered, he spread his arms.
“There's my little brother!””
Daniel didn't move.
Anthony stopped.
“What's wrong?””
Daniel pointed toward a chair.
“Sit down.””
Anthony looked around.
“Where's Naomi?””
“She isn't here.””
Anthony frowned.
“I came to see my niece.””
“You came because you know we're investigating you.””
Anthony's smile disappeared.
“Investigating me?””
Daniel slid the bank statements across the table.
“Eighteen million dollars. Three shell companies. Multiple unauthorized transfers.””
Anthony looked at the papers.
Then he laughed.
“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””
“Is it?””
“You know how complicated corporate accounting can be.””
“Don't insult me.””
Anthony sat down.
He studied the documents.
Then he leaned back.
“Where did you get these?””
“Does it matter?””
“Yes. Because some of these records are incomplete.””
Samuel spoke.
“They're complete enough.””
Anthony turned.
For the first time, he seemed surprised.
“Samuel.””
“Anthony.””
Anthony stared at his former colleague.
“I thought you were gone.””
Samuel shook his head.
“You should have known better.””
Anthony turned toward Daniel.
“So this is what this is about? Samuel comes back after two years, feeds you a story, and suddenly I'm the villain?””
Daniel's voice remained controlled.
“Mother is alive.””
Anthony stopped.
His expression changed.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Anthony looked at Samuel.
Then at the adjoining door.
Evelyn walked into the room.
“Hello, Anthony.””
Anthony stood so quickly that his chair scraped across the floor.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he smiled.
“Mother.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Don't.””
His smile faded.
“I'm glad you're safe.””
“Are you?””
“Of course.””
Evelyn placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Anthony standing outside a private medical facility six years earlier.
Beside him was a man Daniel recognized immediately.
Richard Lawson.
Anthony stared at the picture.
Evelyn spoke.
“You told Daniel I had died. You signed the documents transferring my ownership rights. And you helped Richard hide the money.””
Anthony shook his head.
“Those documents don't prove anything.””
Evelyn placed another photograph beside the first.
This one showed Anthony entering a bank.
Then another.
And another.
Anthony looked toward Daniel.
“Brother, you need to listen to me.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“I'm listening.””
Anthony lowered his voice.
“I was trying to protect the family.””
“By stealing eighteen million dollars?””
“By keeping the company alive!””
Daniel stared at him.
Anthony continued.
“Your investments were failing. You were making decisions that would have destroyed everything Dad built. I had to do something.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You could have spoken to me.””
“You wouldn't have listened.””
“So you forged my signature?””
Anthony didn't answer.
Daniel stood.
“Did you arrange for Mother to disappear?””
Anthony's eyes moved toward Evelyn.
“I didn't know Samuel would take things that far.””
Samuel slammed his palm against the table.
“Don't lie!””
Anthony turned.
“You were the one who arranged everything!””
“I was trying to protect her!””
“You were trying to save yourself!””
The argument grew louder.
Then Anthony suddenly looked at Daniel.
“There's something you still don't understand.””
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
Anthony reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
He placed it on the table.
“Before you accuse me of stealing everything, you should read this.””
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then he stopped.
The document was an amended family trust agreement.
It listed Naomi Carter as the primary beneficiary of a substantial ownership interest.
Daniel looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
Anthony smiled faintly.
“From the original estate files.””
Evelyn's face changed.
“Daniel, don't sign anything he gives you.””
Anthony laughed.
“It's a little late for that.””
He turned toward Daniel.
“Because the real reason Richard needed Naomi out of the way wasn't her father.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Anthony tapped the document.
“Your daughter owns something Richard has been trying to get for two years.””
Naomi leaned closer to the screen.
“What?””
Anthony smiled.
“The controlling voting rights in the original Carter family trust.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She slowly nodded.
May you like
Anthony continued.
“And if Naomi signs the wrong document, everything your family owns could legally become mine.””
