Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Daniel read the message three times.
*MARGARET ELLIS: If you have found Grace's letter, do not go to her address. Come to me first. I know who Rachel's father really was.*
The old house seemed to grow quieter around him.
Even the rain tapping against the boarded windows sounded distant.
Marcus leaned over his shoulder.
“Who's Margaret Ellis?””
Daniel showed him the birth certificate.
“Rachel's legal mother. Apparently, she knows something about her biological father.””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
“And you knew this woman?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I knew the name. Rachel told me Margaret had raised her, but they hadn't spoken in years.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Why?””
“Because Rachel discovered that Margaret had lied about her birth.””
“That's not an answer.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Rachel confronted her three years ago. Margaret admitted that she wasn't her biological mother. She said Eleanor had arranged everything after Grace disappeared.””
Daniel looked at the letter.
“Then why would Margaret suddenly contact me?””
“Because she knows you've found something.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“Or because she wants to take it away.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That is possible.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You've spent the last three chapters of my life telling me what other people might do. I want to know what you did.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I helped Rachel find Grace.””
Daniel went still.
“You what?””
“About six months ago, Rachel asked me to help search for her birth mother. She was already sick, but she was determined to find her.””
“And you never told me?””
“She made me promise.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Rachel was dying. I was sleeping beside her hospital bed, helping her breathe, watching her struggle through every treatment. And she was secretly searching for her mother?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“She wanted to understand where she came from before she left Lily.””
Daniel turned away.
He remembered those months.
Rachel had spent long afternoons looking through old photographs. Sometimes she would sit by the bedroom window with her laptop, closing it whenever he entered.
He had assumed she was writing letters for Lily.
He had even encouraged her.
He felt sick.
“Did she find Grace?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“She contacted her through a private investigator. Grace agreed to meet her, but the meeting never happened.””
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Rachel received a phone call the night before.””
“From whom?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
“She told me someone had threatened to expose something about Lily if she continued.””
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Vanessa looked toward the little girl, who was sitting beside Marcus.
“I don't know. Rachel wouldn't tell me.””
Marcus took out his phone.
“I'm calling a lawyer.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he looked at the message again.
Margaret wanted him to come alone.
That was the first thing that bothered him.
The second was the fact that she knew about the letter before he had told anyone.
He typed a reply.
*DANIEL:* Where are you?
The response arrived almost immediately.
*MARGARET:* My house. Come at eleven. Bring the key. Do not bring Vanessa.
Daniel showed the message to Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“I'm going.””
“Then I'm going with you.””
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“I can't leave her with strangers.””
Marcus nodded.
“I'll stay with her. You go with Vanessa.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Margaret specifically said not to bring me.””
“Exactly,” Marcus replied.
“Which is why Daniel shouldn't walk into that house without someone who knows the truth.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“I'll tell you everything I know on the way.””
He stared at her for a moment.
“You'd better.””
At 10:47, Daniel drove toward Margaret's address.
It was a large colonial house in an affluent neighborhood, surrounded by perfectly trimmed hedges and tall oak trees.
A silver SUV was parked in the driveway.
Daniel recognized the vehicle.
It belonged to Margaret.
He had seen it years earlier at Rachel's birthday party.
He remembered the woman who stepped out of it.
Elegant. Quiet. Always wearing expensive jewelry.
The kind of woman who never raised her voice because she expected everyone to listen the first time.
Daniel knocked.
The door opened before he could knock again.
Margaret Ellis stood in front of him.
She was in her late sixties, with silver hair pinned neatly behind her head and a cream-colored blouse.
Her eyes immediately went to the key in his hand.
“You found it.””
Daniel didn't move.
“You sent the message?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Margaret stepped aside.
“Come in.””
He entered.
Vanessa remained near the door.
Margaret noticed her.
“I specifically asked you not to bring her.””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“I decide who comes with me.””
Margaret's expression tightened.
“Then perhaps you should decide whether you want the truth or another performance.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough. Tell me who Rachel's father was.””
Margaret closed the door.
Then she walked toward the living room.
“Sit down.””
“I'm not here for tea.””
Margaret stopped.
For the first time, her composure slipped.
“Your wife spent thirty years asking that question.””
“And you spent thirty years refusing to answer it.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You think I wanted this?””
“I think you had plenty of opportunities to tell her.””
Margaret sat down.
Her hands rested neatly in her lap.
“Rachel was born on October 14, 1998. Her biological mother was Grace Ellis. Grace was twenty-two, unmarried, and working at a small medical office when she met a man named Thomas Carter.””
Daniel frowned.
“Carter?””
Margaret nodded.
“Eleanor's husband.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Eleanor's husband was Rachel's father?””
Margaret looked toward the fireplace.
“Yes.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“That means—”
“Eleanor was Rachel's biological father's wife,” Margaret finished.
“And when she discovered the affair, she made sure Grace disappeared.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because Eleanor had spent years trying to have a child. She had suffered several miscarriages. When Grace became pregnant, Eleanor saw an opportunity.””
Margaret's voice became quieter.
“She arranged for me to raise the baby. She paid me. She told Grace that the arrangement would be temporary.””
Daniel shook his head.
“And you agreed?””
Margaret looked at him.
“I wanted a child. I had lost two pregnancies. My husband had left me. I was alone.””
“So you took someone else's baby?””
“I raised Rachel.””
“You lied to her.””
Margaret's jaw tightened.
“I gave her a home.””
“You gave her a fake childhood.””
Margaret stood abruptly.
“Do you know what I sacrificed? I gave up my job. I moved towns. I spent every night beside that child when she had pneumonia.
I taught her to read. I paid for her education. I was there when she fell off her bicycle and broke her arm.””
Daniel stood too.
“And you never told her who gave birth to her.””
Margaret's eyes glistened.
“Because I was afraid she'd leave me.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“She did leave you.””
Margaret turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.””
“No,” Vanessa said.
“Rachel deserved the truth.””
Margaret pointed toward the door.
“You have no idea what she put me through.””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“She begged you for answers. You told her Grace was dead.””
Margaret's expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Margaret told Rachel that Grace had died in a car accident. That's why Rachel believed she had no chance of meeting her birth mother.””
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
“Was that true?””
Margaret said nothing.
“Was Grace dead?””
Finally, Margaret whispered:
“No.””
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
“You let Rachel believe her mother was dead?””
“I thought it was better.””
“For whom?””
Margaret looked away.
Daniel walked toward the door.
“I've heard enough.””
“Wait.””
He turned.
Margaret's face had become almost pleading.
“You don't understand. Thomas was a dangerous man.””
“Thomas Carter?””
Margaret nodded.
“He didn't want anyone to know about Rachel. He had a reputation, a family, and money. When Grace threatened to expose him, he made her disappear.””
Daniel felt cold.
“Is he still alive?””
Margaret nodded again.
“He died five years ago.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Margaret reached into a drawer and removed a photograph.
She placed it on the coffee table.
It showed a young Thomas Carter standing beside Eleanor.
But there was someone else in the picture.
A little girl.
Rachel.
Daniel looked closer.
The photograph had been taken on Rachel's third birthday.
On the back was a handwritten message.
*To my little girl. One day, you'll understand why I had to stay away. Love, Dad.*
Daniel looked up.
“Rachel knew him?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No. He sent that photograph to me. I never showed it to her.””
“Why?””
“Because he had another family. Another daughter. And he didn't want Rachel interfering with his inheritance.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then he noticed something else.
The little girl standing beside Thomas wasn't Rachel.
It was another child.
A girl with dark hair and a crescent-shaped birthmark near her left ear.
Daniel recognized that mark.
He had seen it on Lily.
His heart began to pound.
“Who is that child?””
Margaret looked at the photograph.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“That,” she whispered, “is Thomas's other daughter.””
Daniel could barely breathe.
“What's her name?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she said it.
“Vanessa Reed.””
Daniel turned toward the woman beside him.
Vanessa was crying.
And for the first time, he understood why she had been so desperate to keep him away from the truth.
Because she wasn't simply Rachel's friend.
May you like
She was Rachel's half-sister.
And she had been standing beside their family for years.
