Chapter 6: The Photograph From The Last Three Days

Daniel drove back to the old Carter house so fast that Vanessa had to grip the dashboard.

He barely noticed the rain.

His mind was fixed on one image.

Rachel.

Three days before her death.

Standing beside Richard Hale.

A man she had supposedly never met.

“What hospital?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa looked straight ahead.

“St. Mary's Medical Center.””

“Why was Hale there?””

“I don't know.””

“You work for him.””

“I worked for him. I resigned two months ago.””

Daniel glanced at her.

“You never mentioned that.””

“Because I didn't want you to know how much I was involved.””

He pressed harder on the accelerator.

“What did Rachel tell you about him?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She said he had contacted her after she found Grace.””

“And?””

“She said he knew about the letter.””

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Did he threaten her?””

Vanessa stared through the windshield.

“He told her that if she contacted Grace, she would lose everything.””

“Her inheritance?””

“More than that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“He told her that Lily could be taken away.””

The car seemed to go silent.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?””

“He said the family could challenge Rachel's ability to care for Lily because of her medical condition and the financial instability caused by her treatment.””

Daniel felt rage rise through his chest.

“Rachel was sick. She was not an unfit mother.””

“I know.””

“She loved Lily more than anything.””

“I know, Daniel.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because Rachel begged me not to involve you.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Everyone seems to have a promise from my wife. Everyone except me.””

Vanessa turned away.

“I deserve that.””

They arrived at the old house at 11:38.

Marcus stood outside the entrance.

His face was tense.

Daniel got out.

“Where's Lily?””

“Inside. She's fine.””

“Show me the photograph.””

Marcus handed him a plastic sleeve.

Inside was a color photograph.

Rachel stood in a hospital corridor wearing a pale blue cardigan and holding a folder against her chest.

She looked thin.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Beside her stood Richard Hale.

A tall man in his late fifties with silver hair and a dark suit.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

He had attended Rachel's memorial service.

He had even approached Daniel afterward to offer condolences.

Daniel remembered his words.

“Rachel was a remarkable woman. If there's anything the family needs, please don't hesitate to call.””

Daniel looked at the date stamped on the back.

Three days before Rachel died.

“Who took this?””

Marcus shook his head.

“It was inside an envelope hidden behind the cabinet.””

Daniel turned it over.

A message was written on the back.

*THE MAN WHO KNOWS THE TRUTH ALSO KNOWS WHY RACHEL DIED.*

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

He looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the photograph as if she had seen a ghost.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

“Did Rachel ever tell you she met Hale at the hospital?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Never.””

Marcus pointed toward the living room.

“There's something else.””

They entered.

Lily sat on the old sofa with a coloring book in her lap.

“Daddy!””

Daniel immediately knelt beside her.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“Uncle Marcus said I found a clue.””

“You did, sweetheart.””

He kissed her forehead.

“Did you touch anything else?””

“Just the envelope. Uncle Marcus opened it.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Good.””

Marcus led him toward the cabinet.

A small wooden panel had been discovered behind it. The panel contained a narrow compartment with several documents.

One was a hospital visitor record.

Rachel's name appeared at the top.

The date matched the photograph.

Under visitor authorization was another name.

*RICHARD HALE — LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE.*

Daniel frowned.

“Why would a lawyer be listed as a legal representative?””

Vanessa took the document.

“Because Rachel signed something.””

“What?””

Vanessa studied the page.

“A medical authorization.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Rachel may have appointed Hale to receive certain medical information.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That makes no sense. I was her husband.””

“Unless she had a reason to keep something private.””

Daniel looked at the document.

There was another page attached.

A hospital consent form.

He read it carefully.

Then he noticed a handwritten note near the bottom.

*PATIENT REQUESTS THAT BIOLOGICAL MATERNITY TEST RESULTS REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL UNTIL VERIFIED.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What test results?””

She stared at the page.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Could it be a DNA test?””

Daniel read the line again.

Biological maternity.

The phrase seemed to burn into his mind.

Rachel had been searching for Grace.

She had found her.

She had been threatened by Hale.

And three days before her death, she had undergone a test to verify something about her biological mother.

“Where are the results?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa examined the remaining documents.

“There's a laboratory reference number.””

Daniel photographed it.

Then he called St. Mary's Medical Center.

After several transfers, a medical records representative answered.

“St. Mary's, medical records department. How may I help you?””

“My name is Daniel Carter. My wife, Rachel Carter, was a patient there. She passed away recently. I need to obtain a copy of a test result from the final week of her treatment.””

“I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. Carter. Are you the legally authorized representative?””

“Yes. I'm her husband.””

“Can you provide her date of birth and medical record number?””

Daniel supplied the information.

The representative typed.

Then stopped.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“I'm seeing a restricted record.””

“Restricted by whom?””

“There's an authorization on file limiting disclosure to the named legal representative.””

“Who is the representative?””

A pause.

“Richard Hale.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Can you transfer me to a supervisor?””

“Certainly.””

A few minutes later, another voice came on the line.

“Mr. Carter, this is Sandra in medical records. I understand you're requesting information about your late wife.””

“Yes. I need to know why her medical records were restricted.””

“I'm not permitted to disclose the contents without proper legal authorization.””

“I'm her husband.””

“I understand.””

“Then tell me what she was tested for.””

Sandra hesitated.

“I can confirm that the restricted record relates to a genetic identification procedure.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

“Genetic identification?””

“Yes.””

“Was it a DNA test?””

“I'm unable to confirm the results over the phone.””

“Was it connected to her biological mother?””

Another pause.

Then Sandra said something Daniel would never forget.

“The record indicates that the patient requested confirmation of both maternal and paternal identities.””

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

Both.

Not just Grace.

Rachel had been trying to identify her father, too.

“Did the results come back?””

Sandra lowered her voice.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The day before Mrs. Carter passed away.””

Daniel stared at the wall.

“Who received them?””

“Mr. Hale.””

The call ended a moment later.

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

Marcus watched him.

“What did they say?””

Daniel told them.

Vanessa looked as though she might collapse.

“Then Rachel knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That the test results had come back.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“And Hale received them.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Which means he knows the truth.””

Daniel pulled the flash drive from his pocket.

“Then let's listen to what Rachel recorded.””

Marcus found an old laptop in the house.

He inserted the drive.

A single audio file appeared.

*RACHEL_FINAL_RECORDING.wav*

Daniel clicked it.

At first, there was only static.

Then Rachel's voice filled the room.

It was weak.

But unmistakably hers.

“If you're hearing this, then I didn't get the chance to explain everything myself.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

Rachel continued.

“I found Grace. I know now that she never abandoned me. Margaret lied.

Eleanor lied. And Thomas Carter was not the man I believed he was.””

A short pause followed.

Then Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Daniel, I need you to know something. I never wanted to keep secrets from you. I was trying to protect Lily.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Mommy,” Lily whispered.

He looked down.

She had moved closer.

He put an arm around her.

Rachel's recording continued.

“The DNA results came back yesterday. The truth about my father is worse than I expected. Richard knows. He has the original documents, and he's been trying to make sure they never reach you.””

A faint noise sounded in the background of the recording.

A door closing.

Then Rachel's voice became urgent.

“If Richard comes to you, don't believe anything he says. And don't let him near Lily.””

Daniel felt his pulse racing.

“Rachel, what happened?”” he whispered.

On the recording, she continued.

“There is something else. Something I found out about Vanessa.””

Vanessa's head snapped up.

Daniel looked at her.

Rachel's voice trembled.

“I thought she was helping me. I believed she was the only person I could trust. But the truth is...””

The recording suddenly stopped.

A click.

Silence.

Marcus checked the laptop.

“That's the whole file?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the file properties.

The recording was nearly nine minutes long.

But the audio stopped after three minutes and twelve seconds.

“There's more,” he said.

Vanessa approached the laptop.

“Let me see.””

Daniel stepped between her and the screen.

“Don't.””

“Daniel, I need to know what she said.””

“You've known plenty of things you didn't tell us.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But Daniel didn't care.

He checked the flash drive again.

A second file appeared.

It was hidden inside a folder named TEMP.

*VOICE_NOTE_2.wav*

He clicked it.

The recording began with a faint sound of footsteps.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Vanessa, if you're listening to this, I'm sorry.””

Daniel looked at the woman beside him.

Vanessa's lips parted.

Rachel continued.

“I know why you stayed close to me. I know what Thomas promised your mother. And I know you didn't tell me the truth because you were afraid of losing your inheritance.””

Vanessa backed away.

Daniel stared at her.

Rachel's voice became quieter.

“But the money isn't the reason I'm leaving this message.””

A long pause followed.

Then Rachel said:

“Vanessa, I found out who really paid for my treatment. And it wasn't Daniel.””

Daniel froze.

He slowly turned toward Vanessa.

Rachel's voice continued.

“It was you.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

The recording went on.

“You paid the hospital bills. You arranged the private nurse. You even made sure Lily's school expenses were covered. But you didn't do it with your own money.””

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

“Where did the money come from?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

She shook her head.

Rachel's voice continued.

“It came from an account Thomas Carter opened in Lily's name before she was born. An account that Richard Hale was supposed to protect.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“An account for Lily?””

Vanessa nodded faintly.

“Rachel found out,” she whispered.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What else did she find?””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

The recording ended with Rachel's final words.

“Daniel, if you ever hear this, please don't let Lily grow up believing that everyone who loves her is telling the truth. Sometimes people protect you because they love you. Sometimes they protect you because they need you to stay quiet.””

The laptop went silent.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There's a folder inside the flash drive.””

Daniel opened it.

A scanned bank statement appeared.

The account holder's name was clearly printed.

*LILY CARTER — BENEFICIARY.*

The balance was just over $2.3 million.

But one transaction stood out.

A transfer made three days before Rachel died.

The entire balance had been moved.

Daniel checked the recipient.

His face went cold.

The money had been transferred into an account belonging to Richard Hale.

And the authorization signature was Rachel Carter's.

Daniel stared at the signature.

It looked exactly like his wife's handwriting.

But something was wrong.

The date.

Rachel had been unconscious in the hospital that day.

Marcus leaned over the screen.

“Daniel...””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Did you sign this?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

She stared at the document.

And for the first time, she seemed genuinely terrified.

“Richard Hale,” she whispered.

Daniel closed the laptop.

He reached for his phone.

“We're going to the police.””

But before he could dial, an unknown number appeared on the screen.

He answered.

A man's calm voice came through.

“Mr. Carter. My name is Richard Hale.””

Daniel didn't speak.

“I understand you've been looking through some private family documents.””

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“Why did you take my daughter's money?””

A brief silence followed.

Then Hale laughed softly.

“Your daughter's money?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, I think you've misunderstood something.””

“What?””

“The account belongs to someone else.””

Daniel stared at the bank statement.

“It's in Lily's name.””

“Then perhaps you should ask your friend Vanessa why she allowed the account to be transferred.””

Daniel turned.

Vanessa was already shaking her head.

Hale continued.

“There's a reason Rachel never told you the truth about your daughter.””

Daniel felt his blood turn cold.

“What does that mean?””

The man's voice dropped.

“Because Lily Carter isn't biologically yours.””

Silence.

Daniel looked at his little girl.

At her black dress.

At the photograph she was still holding.

At the child who had spent the entire morning asking where her mother had gone.

Then Richard Hale delivered the final blow.

“And if you want proof, Mr. Carter, ask Vanessa who Lily's biological father really is.””

The call disconnected.

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel couldn't move.

Because suddenly, the key, the hidden letters, the DNA tests, and the missing money were no longer just secrets about Rachel's past.

May you like

They were secrets about the little girl standing beside him.

And the woman who had helped him bury his wife might know that Lily's entire life had been built on a lie.
