Chapter 5: The Sister Who Buried The Secret

Daniel couldn't look at Vanessa.
Not immediately.
He stared at the photograph on Margaret's coffee table.
The little girl beside Thomas Carter had Vanessa's eyes.
The same narrow shape.
The same dark lashes.
Even the slight tilt of her head was unmistakable.
Daniel picked up the photograph.
“Is this real?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Yes.””
“How long have you known?””
She looked at him.
“Since I was twenty-three.””
Daniel let out a short, disbelieving breath.
“Rachel knew?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I'm not.””
Margaret sat down.
“Thomas had an affair with Grace before Vanessa was born. But he continued seeing other women. Vanessa's mother, Patricia Reed, was another one of them.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“So Rachel and Vanessa had the same father.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew this whole time?””
Margaret nodded.
Daniel looked at Vanessa again.
“You let my wife die without telling her she had a sister?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I wanted to tell her.””
“But you didn't.””
“Thomas threatened my mother. He told her that if anyone exposed his affairs, he'd make sure we lost everything.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Thomas has been dead for five years.””
“I know.””
“Then what were you protecting?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“An inheritance.””
The word hung in the room.
Daniel stared at her.
“Say that again.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Thomas left money in a trust for both of his daughters. Rachel didn't know about it. Neither did Lily.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Vanessa.””
“It's true,” Vanessa continued.
“The trust was supposed to be divided when both daughters were identified. But Thomas's lawyer never completed the paperwork.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“How much?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Approximately four million dollars.””
Daniel took a step backward.
Four million.
His wife had spent the last year of her life struggling to pay medical bills while someone had kept a fortune hidden from her.
“Did you take it?””
“No.””
“Did you know about it before Rachel got sick?””
“Yes.””
Daniel felt something break inside him.
“Then you watched her suffer?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I tried to help her.””
“With what? Flowers? Hospital visits? Groceries?””
“I paid some of her medical bills.””
“From the trust?””
“No. From my own money.””
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
“Why didn't Rachel receive what was hers?””
Margaret clasped her hands.
“Because the trust required proof of parentage. And because Thomas's attorney had instructions to delay any claim until both daughters came forward.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why would he do that?””
Vanessa answered.
“Because Thomas didn't want the family fighting while he was alive. He thought we'd eventually forget about it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“And you decided to let him get what he wanted.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was afraid.””
“Rachel was your sister.””
“I know.””
“You sat at her hospital bed. You watched Lily call you Aunt Vanessa. You listened to my wife talk about her childhood. And you never once thought she deserved to know?””
Vanessa began crying harder.
“I thought I had time.””
Daniel looked away.
Those words hurt more than any excuse.
I thought I had time.
He knew exactly what that meant.
He had thought he had time too.
Time to take Rachel on another vacation.
Time to renew their wedding vows.
Time to teach Lily how to ride a bicycle while Rachel watched from the porch.
But time had disappeared.
And now every secret seemed to be arriving after the person who deserved the truth was gone.
Margaret stood.
“Daniel, there's something else.””
He turned.
“What now?””
Margaret opened a small cabinet and removed a second envelope.
It was thicker than the one Daniel had found in the old house.
“This came from Thomas's attorney after his death.””
Daniel took it.
The envelope was addressed to Rachel Carter.
There was another name beneath it.
*COPY TO: VANESSA REED.*
He opened it.
Inside was a formal legal notice explaining the existence of the trust.
The document listed two beneficiaries.
Rachel Carter.
Vanessa Reed.
But at the bottom, a handwritten note had been added.
*In the event of Rachel Carter's death before identification is finalized, her share shall be held for her lawful descendants.*
Daniel read the sentence again.
“Her lawful descendants.””
Margaret nodded.
“Lily.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“So Lily is entitled to her mother's share.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Half the trust.””
“Approximately two million dollars?””
Vanessa nodded.
Daniel put the papers down.
“Then why did you tell me not to go to Grace's address?””
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
Margaret's face had gone pale.
“Because Grace may have evidence that changes everything.””
“What evidence?””
Margaret sat slowly.
“Thomas didn't just have an affair with Grace. He was married to Eleanor when Rachel was conceived. And the circumstances surrounding Rachel's birth were never legally resolved.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa answered.
“Thomas's estate attorney received a letter claiming that Rachel's birth records had been falsified.””
“By whom?””
Margaret's silence was answer enough.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You?””
“I didn't create the original documents.””
“But you signed them.””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect Rachel.””
“From what?””
Margaret looked at Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
“From being declared illegitimate and losing her inheritance.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Rachel was a child.””
“I know.””
“You let her grow up thinking she was unwanted by her mother because you wanted to keep a secret about her father.””
Margaret covered her face.
“I thought I was saving her.””
Daniel took the envelope.
“Where is Grace?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, please. You need to understand something first.””
He turned.
“What?””
“Grace contacted Rachel two weeks before she died. She told Rachel she wanted to meet Lily.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Why Lily?””
“Because Grace wanted to know her granddaughter.””
“Then why didn't Rachel take her?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Rachel received a second letter.””
“From whom?””
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
Margaret shook her head.
“Don't.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“Tell me!””
Vanessa swallowed.
“From Thomas's attorney. He said that if Rachel made contact with Grace, he would challenge her parentage and freeze the trust.””
Daniel looked at the legal notice.
“But Thomas is dead.””
“His attorney is still alive.””
“Who?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Richard Hale.””
Daniel recognized the name.
Hale & Whitmore.
The firm that had handled the sale of Thomas Carter's estate.
He had seen the name on documents before.
“What does Richard Hale have to do with you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He was Thomas's closest friend.””
Daniel felt the room tighten around him.
“And you still work with him?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Margaret did.
“Vanessa has been working at his law firm for six years.””
Daniel stared at her.
The funeral.
The key.
The warning.
The missing letter.
Suddenly, the pieces seemed to form a picture he didn't want to see.
“Were you sent to Rachel?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Did Hale know you were close to her?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you to keep an eye on her?””
Vanessa's silence lasted too long.
Daniel stepped toward the door.
“I'm leaving.””
“Daniel, wait.””
“No. I need to get Lily.””
Vanessa followed him.
“Please listen. I didn't tell Rachel because Hale said he would destroy her claim. But I never intended to hurt her.””
Daniel stopped.
“Then why did you shout at my daughter at the funeral?””
Vanessa froze.
“Because I saw the key.””
“What about it?””
“Rachel told me the key was connected to the old house. She said that if Lily ever found it, I had to make sure she didn't open the cabinet.””
Daniel stared.
“You knew what was inside?””
“No. Rachel never told me.””
“Then why stop her?””
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
“Because the cabinet contained the documents that could prove Thomas's estate had been manipulated.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You knew the truth was inside, and you tried to stop us from finding it.””
“I was afraid of what would happen if Hale found out.””
Daniel opened the front door.
“Maybe you should have thought about that before you became part of this family.””
He walked outside.
Vanessa followed him onto the porch.
“Daniel!””
He turned.
She held out a small silver flash drive.
“Rachel gave me this two days before she died.””
Daniel stared at it.
“What is it?””
“A recording.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Of Richard Hale talking to Thomas Carter's estate manager.””
Daniel took the drive.
“Why didn't you give it to Rachel's attorney?””
“Because the recording contains something else.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Richard says Thomas didn't die naturally.””
Daniel's fingers tightened around the flash drive.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone may have murdered your wife's father.””
Daniel stared at her.
Then his phone rang.
It was Marcus.
He answered immediately.
“What's wrong?””
Marcus's voice sounded panicked.
“Daniel, get back here. Now.””
“What happened?””
“Lily found something in the old house.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Marcus took a breath.
“Another envelope. It has your name on it.””
“What's inside?””
“I don't know. But there's a photograph.””
“Of whom?””
Marcus was silent for a second.
Then he said:
“Of Rachel. Taken three days before she died.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She was already shaking her head.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Marcus, what's wrong with the photograph?””
His brother's answer came slowly.
“Rachel is standing outside a hospital room.””
Daniel's heart stopped.
“Which hospital?””
Marcus swallowed.
“The one where she died.””
“And who's standing beside her?””
A pause.
May you like
Then Marcus said:
“Richard Hale.””
