Chapter 9: The Mother Who Never Stopped Searching

Daniel couldn't move.

Grace's words had left him staring at her as though the woman had spoken in another language.

“Explain.””

Grace glanced toward Catherine.

“Are you his attorney?””

“Yes. Catherine Brooks.””

Grace nodded.

“Then I want everything documented.””

Catherine opened her briefcase.

“We can arrange a formal statement.””

“No,” Grace said.

“Not later. Now.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Rachel was born at St. Mary's on October 14, 1998. I gave birth to her at 6:42 in the morning.

She was healthy. She had dark hair and a small mark behind her left ear.””

Daniel remembered the photograph.

The crescent-shaped mark.

He looked at Vanessa.

Grace continued.

“Patricia Reed was the nurse assigned to my room. She was kind. She helped me when I couldn't stop crying because I was afraid they would take my baby.””

“Who would take her?”” Daniel asked.

“Thomas Carter.””

Grace's voice trembled.

“He had promised me that if I had the child, he would make sure she was cared for. But when Eleanor found out about our relationship, everything changed.””

Daniel listened without interrupting.

“Eleanor came to the hospital. She told me that Thomas had died in an accident. She said he had left instructions for the baby to be raised by Margaret.””

Daniel frowned.

“But Thomas was alive.””

Grace nodded.

“I learned that later.””

“Why did you believe Eleanor?””

“Because she showed me documents. Legal papers. A statement supposedly signed by Thomas.””

Grace wiped her eyes.

“I was young. I had no money. I was terrified. And then Patricia told me that if I fought the arrangement, I might lose my daughter permanently.””

Daniel felt his anger rising.

“Patricia knew?””

Grace nodded.

“She believed she was protecting me.””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“My mother never told me.””

Grace turned toward her.

“Your mother carried a terrible burden. She helped me, but she also made a decision that changed several lives.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Daniel asked the question that had been haunting him.

“What happened to the babies?””

Grace took a breath.

“Two girls were born within minutes of each other. Rachel was mine. Emily was Patricia's biological granddaughter through her daughter.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“What?””

Grace nodded.

“Patricia's daughter was a young woman named Rebecca. She had been involved with Richard Hale before he married his wife.””

Daniel stared.

“Richard's daughter?””

“Yes. Emily was Rebecca's child.””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“So Emily is Richard's biological daughter.””

“Yes.””

“But why was she in the hospital?””

Grace continued.

“Rebecca had given birth privately. She was unable to care for the baby, and Patricia arranged for Emily to remain at St. Mary's while legal guardianship was sorted out.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then how did the records get mixed up?””

Grace looked at him.

“Because Eleanor wanted Rachel.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Why?””

“Because she believed Rachel was Thomas's only child. She wanted to raise her as her own and secure the Carter family inheritance.””

“But she was already supposed to be raised by Margaret.””

“That was the arrangement. Until Patricia discovered something.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?””

Grace looked at her.

“Your mother found out that Thomas had another daughter.””

“Rachel?””

“No. You.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

Grace continued.

“Thomas had been seeing your mother before he met me. When Patricia learned that he had fathered another child, she realized the family was hiding more than one secret.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This is getting more complicated.””

Grace nodded.

“It is. But the most important thing is what happened after Rachel and Emily were born.””

She reached into her handbag.

She removed a small photograph.

It showed two newborn babies in separate bassinets.

One wore a pink bracelet.

The other wore a white bracelet.

On the back, two names had been written.

Rachel Ellis.

Emily Reed.

Daniel stared.

“Those names are correct.””

Grace nodded.

“Initially, yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Grace's hands trembled.

“During a night shift, one of the nurses discovered that the identification bracelets had been placed on the wrong babies.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“An accident?””

Grace shook her head.

“No.””

“Who did it?””

Grace looked toward Vanessa.

“Patricia.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“My mother?””

Grace nodded.

“She switched the bracelets because Eleanor had threatened to take Rachel away from me permanently. Patricia thought that if Rachel was identified as Emily, the baby would remain under her supervision until the legal situation was resolved.””

Daniel stared.

“Wait. You're saying my wife's identity was switched with another baby?””

Grace nodded.

“But the switch was discovered before either child left the hospital.””

Daniel felt a wave of confusion.

“Then why did the records remain wrong?””

Grace looked down.

“Because someone paid to make sure they did.””

Catherine immediately spoke.

“Do you have evidence of that?””

Grace removed another document.

A copy of a financial transfer.

The recipient was Patricia Reed.

The sender was an account connected to Thomas Carter's estate.

The amount was $250,000.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Your mother was paid?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never knew.””

Grace continued.

“Patricia told me the money was for legal assistance. She promised that she would help me regain custody of Rachel.””

“Did she?””

Grace's eyes filled.

“No.””

Daniel looked toward the hospital corridor.

“So the switch was discovered, but someone changed the records anyway.””

Grace nodded.

“Thomas wanted to ensure that Rachel remained connected to the Carter estate. Richard Hale was handling the legal paperwork. He arranged for the original records to be sealed.””

Daniel's mind raced.

“Then why did Lily's records show a connection to Thomas?””

Grace looked at him.

“Because Thomas had a plan.””

“What plan?””

“He wanted to make sure his descendants could never challenge the estate.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would he care?””

“Because he had made promises to several women. He had children he didn't acknowledge. He wanted the money controlled by the family he considered legitimate.””

Vanessa whispered:

“And Richard helped him.””

Grace nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked down at the documents.

“Then where does Lily fit into this?””

Grace took another breath.

“Rachel married you. She had Lily. Thomas was dead by then.

But Richard had access to the old family trust. When Lily was born, he saw an opportunity.””

“What opportunity?””

“To use Lily's identity as a way to move money without triggering questions about Rachel's parentage.””

Daniel felt sick.

“So Lily's account was created using the inheritance?””

“Yes.””

“And Richard took it.””

Grace nodded.

“But there is something you still don't know.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Grace looked toward Vanessa.

“Rachel discovered that Lily's birth records had been altered again.””

Daniel froze.

“Again?””

Grace nodded.

“She had found the original hospital documents. They showed that Lily was born to Rachel and Daniel. But a second set of records listed another biological father.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Who?””

Grace lowered her voice.

“Richard Hale.””

Vanessa gasped.

“No.””

Grace looked at her.

“Richard had been secretly involved with Rachel.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“That's impossible.””

Grace shook her head.

“I wish it were.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My wife would never—”

“Rachel was drugged.””

The words cut through him.

Grace's eyes filled.

“She told me she had been given medication before a medical procedure. She remembered waking up in a room with Richard beside her. She didn't understand what had happened until she found the records.””

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

He grabbed the edge of a nearby chair.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she was afraid you would think she had betrayed you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

He remembered Rachel's last months.

Her sudden anxiety.

The nights she woke screaming.

The way she sometimes flinched when someone entered the bedroom unexpectedly.

He had thought it was the illness.

He had thought the pain medication was causing nightmares.

He had never imagined something like this.

Vanessa began crying.

“I knew she was afraid of him. I just didn't know why.””

Grace looked at her.

“You knew more than you admitted.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.””

Daniel turned.

“What did you know?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Richard told me that Rachel had become unstable. He said she was accusing people of things that never happened. He asked me to help him keep her away from the estate documents.””

Daniel stared.

“And you agreed?””

“I thought he was protecting her.””

“You believed him over your own sister?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

Grace stepped between them.

“There's more.””

Daniel looked at her.

Grace reached into her bag and removed a small envelope.

It had Rachel's handwriting on the front.

*FOR DANIEL. IF I CANNOT TELL HIM MYSELF.*

Daniel took it with trembling hands.

Inside was a letter.

He unfolded it.

My Daniel,

If you're reading this, then the truth has reached you in a way I couldn't prevent.

I need you to know that I never betrayed you. I loved you. I loved our life. I loved every morning when Lily climbed into our bed and every night you held my hand while I pretended I wasn't afraid.

Something happened at the hospital. I didn't understand it at first. I only knew that Richard had access to records he shouldn't have had, and that he was using my illness to make me doubt myself.

I found the original DNA results.

Daniel, you are Lily's biological father.

He stopped reading.

His eyes blurred.

He read the sentence again.

You are Lily's biological father.

A sound escaped his throat.

Not quite a laugh.

Not quite a sob.

He looked at Grace.

“Then why did Hale say she wasn't?””

Grace's expression hardened.

“Because he altered the test results.””

Daniel continued reading.

The report Richard showed me was not the original. I found the real one in the hospital archive. It confirms that Lily is yours.

But there is another result. One that concerns Richard.

Daniel turned the page.

The next paragraph was written in larger, shakier letters.

Richard is not the man he claims to be. He has been using Thomas's identity to hide his own connection to the family. He is not simply an attorney. He is—

The rest of the paragraph was missing.

Daniel looked up.

“Where's the rest?””

Grace shook her head.

“I don't know.””

He examined the letter.

A page had clearly been torn away.

Then he noticed a small handwritten note at the bottom.

*The original report is with the woman who delivered me.*

Daniel looked at Grace.

“You delivered Rachel?””

Grace nodded.

“I did.””

“Then you have the report?””

Grace looked toward the hospital.

“No. Patricia took it.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“My mother?””

Grace nodded.

“She kept the original documents in a locked box. Before she died, she gave me the key.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the box?””

Vanessa slowly reached into her handbag.

She removed a small silver key.

“My mother left this for me.””

Grace stared at it.

“Then she wanted you to find the truth.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I think so.””

Daniel looked at the key.

“Where's the box?””

Vanessa's answer was almost a whisper.

“At my apartment.””

They left the hospital together.

For the first time, Daniel felt a small piece of relief.

Lily was his daughter.

Rachel had loved him.

And the worst accusation Richard Hale had made was a lie.

But the missing page in Rachel's letter bothered him.

Richard wasn't simply hiding a financial crime.

He was hiding his own identity.

And whatever Patricia Reed had kept in that locked box might finally explain why.

When they reached Vanessa's apartment, she led them into a small study.

A framed photograph of Patricia stood on the desk.

Beside it was a wooden box with a silver lock.

Vanessa inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were old photographs, hospital documents, and several sealed envelopes.

Daniel picked up the thickest folder.

The first page was a DNA report.

The second was a notarized statement.

The third was a birth certificate.

He read the name.

Then he read it again.

*RICHARD HALE — DATE OF BIRTH: OCTOBER 14, 1998.*

Daniel looked up.

“That's Rachel's birthday.””

Grace slowly nodded.

“Richard was born on the same day?””

Vanessa stared at the document.

“No.””

She turned the page.

Her hands began to shake.

“That's not his birth certificate.””

Daniel looked closer.

The document listed Thomas Carter and Grace Ellis as the biological parents.

But the name at the top had been altered.

Beneath it was the original name.

*RACHEL ELLIS.*

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Richard Hale isn't Rachel's father.””

Grace whispered:

“Richard Hale is Rachel.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at the photograph of his wife.

Then at the document.

It made no sense.

Until he noticed the final page.

A legal name-change certificate.

A hospital transfer record.

And a photograph of a young man standing outside the Carter family residence.

The young man had Rachel's eyes.

His name was written beneath the photograph.

*RICHARD HALE — FORMERLY REGISTERED AS RACHEL ELLIS.*

Daniel stared.

Grace began crying.

Then Vanessa whispered the words that made the entire room feel cold.

“Richard isn't the man who stole Rachel's identity.””

May you like

She looked at Daniel.

“Richard is Rachel.””
