Chapter 6: The Truth About Malik

Andre was still holding the document when I heard Malik whisper my name.
“Mom?””
I couldn't look at him.
Not after what Andre had just said.
My father stood at the end of the driveway, his expression finally stripped of its certainty.
Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
Andre raised the paper.
“This says Evelyn Reynolds was the mother.””
My father said nothing.
Andre stepped toward him.
“Answer me.””
“It's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
My father glanced at Malik.
That single glance made something inside me snap.
“Don't look at my son.””
My father looked back at me.
“Your son?””
“Yes.””
His jaw tightened.
“You've been calling him that for fifteen years.””
“He is my son.””
“Biologically?””
The word hung in the cold morning air.
Malik stared at me.
I felt his fingers find mine.
“Mom,” he whispered, “what does he mean?””
Andre turned toward my father.
“You know exactly what he means.””
My father shook his head.
“You're all asking the wrong question.””
“Then give us the right one,” Andre said.
My father's eyes moved to me.
“The question is not who gave birth to Malik.””
He paused.
“The question is why you were chosen to raise him.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Chosen?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Calvin, stop.””
He turned on her.
“You've said enough.””
“No.””
Her voice shook, but she didn't retreat.
“They deserve to know.””
My father looked at her with open hatred.
“You've already destroyed everything.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“No. He did.””
Andre reached for the envelope.
“What else is in here?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“There's a letter.””
“From whom?””
“Evelyn.””
My heart stopped.
“What letter?””
Vanessa pulled another folded sheet from inside her coat.
“She wrote it before she disappeared.””
My father suddenly moved toward her.
Andre stepped between them.
“Don't.””
Vanessa handed the letter to me.
My fingers trembled.
The paper was old.
Creased.
Yellowed around the edges.
My father's face went pale.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the first line made my knees weak.
*Denise,*
*If you're reading this, Calvin finally failed to keep us apart.*
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
I kept reading.
*I need you to know that I never abandoned my children.*
My breathing caught.
Children.
Plural.
I looked at Malik.
Then back at the page.
*They told me you would understand. They promised me you would raise them safely. They said it was temporary.*
The paper shook in my hands.
Andre read over my shoulder.
“Who is this woman?”” he asked.
I looked at him.
“Evelyn.””
“My sister?””
I nodded.
He stared at the page.
“But why would your sister be writing about your children?””
I whispered, “I don't know.””
Vanessa's voice came quietly.
“Because Evelyn was their mother.””
Malik pulled away from me.
“What?””
I turned.
“Malik—”
“No.””
His eyes were wet.
“You said Amara was my sister.””
“She is.””
“You said she was your daughter.””
“I thought she was.””
“You thought?””
The word broke me.
He stared at me.
“Am I your son?””
I opened my mouth.
My father's voice cut through the silence.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“Malik is your son.””
Andre frowned.
“You just said biological.””
My father shook his head.
“The records were altered.””
He looked at me.
“She gave birth to him.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
“Evelyn.””
Malik backed away.
“No.””
Andre grabbed the papers.
“So Evelyn gave birth to both children?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then Denise isn't their biological mother.””
“No.””
The world went completely quiet.
I felt like I was standing outside myself, watching someone else's life collapse.
Malik stared at me.
“You lied to me.””
I dropped the letter.
“I never lied about loving you.””
“But you lied about being my mother.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I gave birth to you.””
My father shook his head.
“You didn't.””
I turned on him.
“Yes, I did.””
“You were in the room.””
“I carried him.””
“You carried the pregnancy.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
Andre looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
My father inhaled slowly.
“You were never pregnant with Malik.””
I stared at him.
“You're insane.””
“I arranged the treatment.””
“What treatment?””
“Implantation.””
Andre's expression changed.
“You used IVF.””
My father nodded.
“Denise was implanted with Evelyn's embryos.””
I couldn't breathe.
“No.””
“You believed the pregnancy was yours.””
“It was my body.””
“Yes.””
“You told me those babies were mine.””
“I told you they would be.””
Andre looked horrified.
“Why would you do this?””
My father didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
“Because Evelyn refused to give them up.””
My father glared at her.
“She threatened to expose him,” Vanessa continued.
“Who?””
I asked.
Vanessa looked at my father.
“Calvin had built an entire medical business around something he wasn't supposed to be doing.””
My father's jaw tightened.
“What?””
Andre asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wasn't just changing birth records.””
She looked at me.
“He was selling access to embryos, donor records, fertility treatments. He was arranging private adoptions for wealthy families.””
Andre stared at my father.
“You sold babies?””
“I matched families with children who needed homes.””
“Without their mothers' consent?””
“I handled difficult cases.””
“That's not an answer.””
My father didn't respond.
I looked at the letter again.
“Why did Evelyn agree to this?””
“She didn't.””
Vanessa said it softly.
“She discovered what Calvin was doing.””
My father stepped toward her.
“You don't know what you're talking about.””
“I was there.””
“And you were paid to keep quiet.””
“I was eighteen.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn't know what I was involved in.””
She looked at me.
“Neither did you.””
My stomach twisted.
“What happened after the twins were born?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Evelyn tried to take them.””
“And?””
“Calvin stopped her.””
“How?””
“He told her if she went to the police, he'd make sure neither child could ever find her.””
My father said nothing.
Andre clenched his fists.
“And then you told Denise Amara died.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was ordered to.””
I looked at my father.
“And Malik?””
“He stayed with you.””
“Why?””
My father answered quietly.
“Because you were the perfect cover.””
The words cut deeper than anything else.
“A young mother.””
He continued.
“A husband who trusted her.””
“A normal family.””
“You wanted Malik to hide the existence of Amara.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because someone else was looking for her.””
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
Andre stepped closer.
“Who?””
My father looked at him.
“The people who financed the clinic.””
Andre froze.
“Investors?””
“Clients.””
“What clients?””
My father's face tightened.
“People who believed they were buying children.””
Malik looked sick.
I immediately turned toward him.
“You don't need to hear this.””
“Yes, I do.””
He wiped his face.
“You've spent my whole life telling me that Dad pays for everything.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted him to be angry at me instead of you.””
Andre looked at me.
“What?””
“The money.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“My paycheck.””
“Why did you send it to Vanessa?””
“Because when I realized Amara was alive, I wanted her protected.””
“From those people?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you come to me?””
I looked at him.
“Because my father told me that if you learned the truth, everyone would come after Malik too.””
Andre closed his eyes.
“I believed him.””
“So did I.””
A car suddenly came screeching around the corner.
Vanessa looked toward it.
Her face changed.
“They found us.””
My father stepped backward.
“You need to leave.””
Andre grabbed his arm.
“No.””
My father pulled away.
“You don't understand.””
“You're going to explain everything.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
My father's eyes moved toward Malik.
“Because they aren't coming for Amara.””
He looked at me.
“They're coming for him.””
The car stopped beside the curb.
A man stepped out.
Then another.
Vanessa whispered, “Calvin…”
My father looked at me one last time.
“Take your son and go.””
“Why?””
“Because twenty minutes ago, someone accessed the original birth registry.””
Andre stared at him.
“Who?””
My father answered with four words.
“The father of Evelyn's children.””
I felt a chill move through me.
“Who is that?””
My father didn't answer.
The front passenger door of the car opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was wearing a long gray coat.
Dark sunglasses.
Her hair pulled back.
She removed the glasses.
My breath stopped.
Malik stared at her.
Andre couldn't move.
Vanessa began to cry.
Because standing in front of us was a woman whose face looked exactly like the baby in the photograph.
Amara.
She looked at me.
Then at Malik.
And finally at my father.
“You told them I was dead,” she said.
My father closed his eyes.
Amara stepped forward.
“But you never told them who my father was.””
She looked at Andre.
Then she pulled a second photograph from her coat.
A photograph of Evelyn.
Standing beside a man whose face I had never seen.
Andre took it from her.
His eyes widened.
“Denise…”
I looked at the photograph.
The man beside Evelyn was smiling at the camera.
I knew him.
Everyone in our town knew him.
Because he had been standing beside me at my wedding.
He had signed Malik's birth certificate as a witness.
And he had been paying my father's medical foundation for years.
Andre whispered his name.
“Richard Carter.””
I looked at him.
“Your father.””
Then Amara said the words that made everything I'd believed about my marriage collapse at once.
“Andre isn't my father.””
She looked at Malik.
“He isn't your father either.””
Her voice broke.
“We have the same mother.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“And the same father.””
I stared at the picture.
My husband's father.
The man everyone had buried eight years ago.
Richard Carter.
My father-in-law.
And suddenly I understood why Andre had never been allowed to know the truth.
May you like
Because the secret wasn't just about my children.
It was about his family too.
