Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Died

The garage door lifted six inches.

Then stopped.

A pair of expensive black shoes appeared beneath it.

Andre pulled Malik behind him.

I couldn't move.

That voice had belonged to a dead man for eight years.

Yet there he was.

Richard Carter.

Alive.

Older than the man in the photograph, but unmistakably him.

His hair was almost completely gray now. His face was thinner. There was a scar along his left temple that hadn't been there the last time I'd seen him.

The last time I'd seen him was at his funeral.

Or what I had believed was his funeral.

He crouched and looked through the opening.

“Denise.””

My mouth went dry.

“Richard.””

He smiled.

“It's been a long time.””

Andre stepped forward.

“You died.””

Richard's eyes moved to his son.

“That's what I needed everyone to believe.””

Andre stared at him.

“You let me bury an empty coffin?””

Richard stood.

“Yes.””

Andre's breathing became ragged.

“You came to my wedding.””

Richard's expression didn't change.

“I did.””

“You watched me marry Denise.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew everything.””

“Yes.””

Andre took another step.

“Why?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because your wife made a choice.””

My stomach tightened.

“Don't.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“You remember.””

“I remember enough.””

“No.””

His eyes hardened.

“You remember what you want to remember.””

Andre looked between us.

“What is he talking about?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

Richard laughed.

“Still protecting him.””

Andre's face tightened.

“Protecting me from what?””

Richard pushed the garage door higher.

“From the truth about how you became the man you are.””

He stepped inside.

Amara came forward.

“You're not taking anyone.””

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

“Evelyn's daughter.””

Amara's face went pale.

“You know my mother.””

“I knew her better than anyone.””

“You stole me from her.””

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“Calvin stole you.””

My father.

Even hearing his name in Richard's voice made my skin crawl.

“You both did this together,” I said.

Richard shook his head.

“I tried to undo it.””

“By disappearing?””

“By surviving.””

Andre gave a bitter laugh.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Richard looked at him.

“You were never supposed to be involved.””

“I've been involved my entire life.””

“No.””

Richard's voice sharpened.

“Your father kept you outside of it.””

“Then why am I in the ledger?””

Richard went silent.

Andre had finally found the right question.

“You called Denise collateral,” he continued.

“You put Malik in a trust. You used my family name.””

His voice broke.

“So tell me what I was.””

Richard looked at me.

“An insurance policy.””

I closed my eyes.

Andre stared at him.

“For what?””

“For me.””

Richard stepped farther inside.

“Calvin was building something he could no longer control. Evelyn discovered it. She threatened to expose him. He needed leverage.””

“And Denise?””

“Was the leverage.””

Richard looked at me.

“She loved her sister.””

I swallowed.

“You knew that.””

“Of course.””

“So you used me.””

“Yes.””

Andre moved toward him.

“And me?””

Richard's face hardened.

“You were the safest person in the family.””

Andre stared.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if you understand your father.””

Richard's voice was cold.

“Your father wanted the company.””

Andre frowned.

“What company?””

“The one you were supposed to inherit.””

Amara stepped forward.

“Carter Biomedical.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Andre shook his head.

“Why would my father need children for that?””

“Because the company wasn't built on medicine.””

His eyes moved to Malik.

“It was built on genetic patents.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Malik.

He was staring at Richard like he was seeing a stranger.

Richard continued.

“Your father discovered that certain genetic combinations had extraordinary commercial value.””

Andre whispered, “And Evelyn's children had one.””

“Both of them.””

“Then why separate them?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because two children made the connection impossible to hide.””

I remembered the yellow blanket.

The hospital room.

My father's signature.

The lie that Amara had died.

All of it had been planned before I ever understood what was happening.

Andre's voice became quieter.

“Why did you make Denise pay all that money?””

Richard shook his head.

“I didn't.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Richard,” Amara said, “that's a lie.””

He looked at her.

“Careful.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You told me Denise was paying for my protection.””

“I told you what you needed to hear.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You took her money.””

Richard's gaze shifted toward me.

“I redirected it.””

“To where?””

He didn't answer.

Andre's phone buzzed.

He looked down.

A notification from his bank.

His face changed.

“What?””

I asked.

He turned the screen toward us.

A transfer had been initiated from our joint account.

One hundred thousand dollars.

Recipient: Carter Biomedical Holdings.

Andre stared at me.

“I didn't authorize this.””

Neither had I.

The transfer window showed a second device logged into the account.

Richard smiled.

“I told you.””

Andre looked up.

“You've been inside my accounts.””

“For years.””

“You've been stealing from us.””

Richard shook his head.

“Preparing for the transition.””

“What transition?””

Richard looked directly at Malik.

“The one that happens when he turns eighteen.””

Malik stepped backward.

“What happens when I turn eighteen?””

I moved toward him.

“Don't listen to him.””

Richard said, “Everything your grandfather built becomes yours.””

Malik's voice trembled.

“I don't want it.””

“You don't understand.””

“I don't care.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You will.””

“No.””

Malik looked at him.

“I just want my family.””

For the first time, Richard seemed unsettled.

He turned toward Andre.

“You taught him that.””

Andre stood beside Malik.

“Yes.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“And that's why I made the mistake of believing you could be controlled.””

Andre frowned.

“What did you do?””

Richard reached into his coat.

I thought he was reaching for a weapon.

Instead, he pulled out a small black envelope.

He handed it to Andre.

“Open it.””

Andre didn't move.

“What's inside?””

“The original agreement.””

“Between who?””

“You.””

Andre took the envelope.

His fingers shook as he opened it.

One page.

Then another.

He read silently.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

“What?””

He looked at me.

Then at Richard.

“You had me sign this.””

Richard said nothing.

“When?””

“When you were nineteen.””

Andre stared at the page.

“I don't remember this.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

“What is it?””

Andre handed it to me.

I read the heading.

*Carter Family Succession Agreement.*

Beneath it was Andre's signature.

My stomach turned.

“He signed away his inheritance.””

Richard nodded.

“Temporarily.””

“Why?””

“So your father could control the company.””

Andre shook his head.

“And Denise?””

Richard said nothing.

I read further.

There was a clause about marriage.

About heirs.

About maintaining the Carter bloodline.

And then I saw my name.

*Denise Reynolds Carter.*

Below it was a handwritten note.

*Acceptable maternal surrogate.*

I couldn't breathe.

I looked at Richard.

“You called me a surrogate.””

“You were never meant to know.””

Andre ripped the paper in half.

Then half again.

“You used my wife.””

Richard's expression remained calm.

“I used the circumstances.””

“You destroyed our lives.””

Richard looked at Malik.

“No.””

He pointed at me.

“She did.””

I turned.

“What?””

He smiled.

“She had a choice fifteen years ago.””

Andre looked at me.

Richard continued.

“She chose you.””

My skin went cold.

“Stop.””

“You chose Andre.””

Richard's voice became almost gentle.

“You chose him over me.””

Andre stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at me.

“Tell him.””

I couldn't.

He stepped closer.

“You and I were together before she married Andre.””

Andre looked at me.

The world stopped.

“No.””

Richard nodded.

“You were pregnant before the wedding.””

I whispered, “That's not how it happened.””

“Tell him.””

“I was never with you.””

Richard laughed.

“Not willingly.””

Andre's expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“Ask your wife what happened the night her father brought her to my clinic.””

Memory hit me like a physical blow.

A locked office.

My father's hand on the door.

Richard standing behind the desk.

A contract.

A threat.

And Evelyn crying in the hallway.

I had spent fifteen years burying the memory so deeply I'd convinced myself it wasn't real.

Andre stared at me.

“Denise?””

I couldn't speak.

Richard whispered:

“You didn't choose Andre instead of me.””

He pointed toward Malik.

“You chose your child instead of yourself.””

The garage fell silent.

Then Amara stepped toward me.

“Mom.””

The word broke whatever was left inside me.

I looked at her.

And finally, after fifteen years, I told the truth.

“My father didn't give me a choice.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

I continued.

“He told me I could save one of the babies.””

Andre's face crumpled.

“What?””

I looked at Malik.

“And I chose him.””

Malik started crying.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

My voice shook.

“I thought I was choosing life.””

Amara covered her mouth.

Richard stepped backward.

Because he knew what was coming next.

I reached into my coat.

Pulled out the old hospital bracelet.

And turned it over.

“There was never a Patient 47.””

Richard's expression changed.

“The number was a code.””

Andre looked at me.

“For what?””

I stared at Richard.

“For the child they believed they'd lost.””

Richard went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

I smiled through my tears.

“From my father.””

Then I held up the second page from the envelope.

The final record.

The one nobody had seen.

It contained a DNA match.

Not between Amara and Malik.

Between Amara and Richard.

And beneath the result was a handwritten statement.

*Richard Carter is not the biological father.*

Andre stared.

Amara froze.

Richard's face went completely white.

I turned the page over.

There was one more name.

The real father of the twins.

A name Richard had spent fifteen years erasing.

I looked at Amara.

Then Malik.

Then Andre.

And finally, at Richard.

“Their father isn't you.””

His lips parted.

“It can't be.””

“It is.””

Andre took the paper from my hands.

His eyes moved across the name.

Then he looked at Richard with horror.

“Dad…”

Richard whispered, “No.””

Andre's voice broke.

“You weren't protecting us.””

He held up the DNA report.

“You were hiding who their father really was.””

Richard backed toward the garage door.

And from somewhere behind him, another voice spoke.

“You finally figured it out.””

We all turned.

My father stood outside.

And beside him was a man I had never seen before.

He looked at Andre.

Then at Malik.

Then at Amara.

May you like

And said quietly:

“I'm their father.””
