Chapter 7: The Woman in the Photograph

The door at the back of the showroom clicked shut.

Marcus turned toward the sound.

A young security employee stood near the service corridor, one hand resting on the door handle. He looked nervous.

“Who closed that?”” Marcus asked.

The employee immediately removed his hand.

“Sorry, sir. I thought someone was coming through.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel wasn't watching the door.

He was watching Vanessa.

She still held her phone.

“My mother,” Marcus said.

“You said the signature was my mother's.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then show me.””

She hesitated.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Show me.””

Vanessa pulled out her phone again and opened the photograph the caller had sent.

Marcus stared at the screen.

It was a scan of a handwritten document.

The paper was old, stained along one edge.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Evelyn Carter.*

His mother's name.

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

“That isn't possible.””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus took the phone.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

He knew that handwriting too.

His mother had written his name exactly that way on school forms when he was a child.

He zoomed in.

The signature was unmistakable.

“Why would my mother sign this?””

Daniel walked toward him.

“Because she knew what happened.””

Marcus looked up.

“Knew what?””

Daniel glanced around the showroom.

“Not here.””

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“I'm done being taken into rooms.””

“This isn't about hiding anything.””

“Then say it here.””

Daniel looked at Isaiah.

The boy was sitting on one of the showroom chairs, holding the miniature red sports car.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your father didn't discover the prototype by accident.””

Marcus waited.

“He was investigating the dealership.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed cars were being moved through the dealership under false paperwork.””

Marcus frowned.

“Stolen cars?””

“Not exactly.””

Daniel took the old file.

“Vehicles were being imported, modified, and resold under different ownership records. Some of the paperwork disappeared. Some names were changed.””

Marcus stared at him.

“And my father found it.””

“Yes.””

“What did my mother have to do with that?””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“She helped him.””

Marcus looked at the signature again.

“How?””

“She worked here.””

Marcus's head snapped up.

“My mother never worked at a dealership.””

“She did.””

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel opened another document.

“Your mother worked in accounting for eight months.””

Marcus looked at the page.

Her name appeared on payroll records.

*Evelyn Carter — Accounts Department.*

His mouth went dry.

“That’s why she knew about the files.””

“Yes.””

“And that's why she signed the complaint?””

Daniel nodded.

Marcus looked toward Isaiah.

His son was watching him now.

Marcus walked over and crouched beside him.

“Hey.””

Isaiah tilted his head.

“What happened?””

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

“Are we still getting the car?””

Marcus almost smiled.

“Yes.””

Isaiah nodded.

“Okay.””

Marcus squeezed his shoulder.

“Stay with me.””

“I will.””

Marcus stood.

Vanessa had moved toward the glass wall.

“Marcus.””

He turned.

She held out her phone.

“There’s more.””

He took it.

The next image showed another page.

This one was dated three days after the dealership incident.

Marcus read the first sentence.

*I confirm that I witnessed the transfer of the prototype vehicle to the Carter family.*

He looked at Daniel.

“My mother witnessed the transfer?””

Daniel nodded.

“But my father never received it.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because the vehicle disappeared.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Daniel took the phone from him.

“Your father was supposed to receive the car after he helped expose the fraudulent records.””

Marcus's brow furrowed.

“Why would the dealership give him a car?””

“Because the vehicle had been used as collateral in a private settlement.””

“Settlement with who?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She spoke quietly.

“Someone inside the dealership.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Your father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the old photograph again.

His father standing outside.

The red prototype behind him.

The police officer beside him.

Then he noticed something he'd missed.

A second person stood near the vehicle.

A woman.

Her face was partially hidden.

Marcus zoomed in.

His heart stopped.

The woman had his mother's hair.

Her coat.

Her posture.

“That's my mother.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why was she there?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Because she was trying to stop your father from being arrested.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

His mother's hand was raised.

As if she were pointing toward someone.

Not the police.

Not his father.

Toward the showroom.

Toward a man standing behind the glass.

Marcus zoomed farther.

The image blurred.

But the man's suit was visible.

Gray.

His face wasn't.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Who was that?””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“I don't know.””

“You've had this for fifteen years.””

“I never saw the original clearly.””

“Then why keep it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because your mother told me to.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“She gave me the photograph.””

“When?””

“The night your father was arrested.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She said, ‘If they ever come looking for this, give it to my son.’”

Marcus stared.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I didn't know where you were.””

“You knew my name.””

“I knew you were six.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

Daniel's eyes lowered.

“I was afraid.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everybody was afraid.””

Vanessa suddenly looked toward the reception desk.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

She pointed.

A printer was running.

Neither of them had touched it.

A sheet slid out.

Vanessa walked over.

She picked it up.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

She didn't answer.

Marcus took the page.

At the top was a dealership header.

Underneath:

*VEHICLE TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION*

Marcus scanned the document.

The buyer was listed as Leon Carter.

The witness was Evelyn Carter.

And the approving manager was—

*Richard Whitmore.*

Marcus looked up.

Daniel's father.

But below the signature was a second handwritten note.

Marcus read it aloud.

“Transfer canceled upon instruction of R.W.””

Daniel went pale.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who instructed him?””

Daniel's phone rang.

He pulled it from his pocket.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Then a distorted voice said:

“You should have burned the file.””

Daniel's face went white.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is this?””

The voice ignored him.

“You had one job, Daniel.””

Daniel's hand began to shake.

“What do you want?””

The caller laughed softly.

“Not from you.””

A pause.

Then:

“I'm calling for Marcus.””

Marcus held out his hand.

Daniel gave him the phone.

Marcus pressed it to his ear.

“I'm listening.””

The voice became clearer.

“Your mother didn't sign that document willingly.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

“You want the truth about your father?””

“Yes.””

“Then stop asking Daniel.””

Marcus's pulse quickened.

“Why?””

“Because he wasn't the one who betrayed Leon.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Who was?””

The caller answered with three words.

“Your mother was.””

The line went dead.

Marcus stood frozen.

Isaiah ran over.

“Dad?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Behind him, Vanessa whispered:

“That can't be true.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why not?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

“Because…”

She stared at the signature.

“…my mother told me the same thing.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“Your mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

May you like

“She told me your mother was the reason Leon went to prison.””

And before Marcus could ask another question, the showroom lights flickered off.
