Chapter 9: The Vault

The brass key was warm from Vanessa's skin.

She held it between two fingers.

Marcus stared at it.

“Your mother gave you that?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me never to lose it.””

“When?””

“I was nine.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“And you recognize it?””

Daniel nodded.

“My father had one just like it.””

“Just like it?””

“No.””

Daniel corrected himself.

“The same one.””

Vanessa's hand trembled.

“How could my mother have it?””

Daniel looked toward the windows.

“I don't know.””

Marcus picked up his phone.

The anonymous messages were still on the screen.

*One hour.*

He looked at the clock.

Forty-eight minutes remained.

“Let's go.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm coming.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You're staying with us.””

“I wasn't asking permission.””

Marcus held his stare.

Then nodded.

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

Isaiah stood.

“Dad, where are we going?””

Marcus crouched.

“Somewhere we should have gone a long time ago.””

“Is it dangerous?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“I don't know.””

Isaiah looked at Daniel.

“Is my dad scared?””

Daniel glanced at Marcus.

“Yes.””

Marcus gave him a look.

Daniel smiled faintly.

“But he's still going.””

Isaiah nodded.

“Then I'm okay.””

They left through the service entrance.

The night air was cool.

Across the street, construction equipment stood behind temporary barriers. Dust drifted through the floodlights.

Daniel led them down a narrow side road.

“The old dealership was here,” he said.

Marcus looked around.

Nothing remained except a fenced lot and a temporary office trailer.

“Where's the vault?””

“Basement.””

“Under what?””

“The original service bay.””

Marcus stared at the empty lot.

“It's gone.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The building is gone.””

He pointed toward a section of pavement.

“The foundation isn't.””

They crossed the barrier through a gap.

Marcus kept Isaiah close.

Vanessa walked beside Daniel.

“You knew about this.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I knew the vault existed.””

“You never looked?””

“I tried.””

“And?””

“My father changed the locks.””

Marcus stopped.

“Your father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He told me some records were private.””

“Why didn't you force the door?””

“Because I was twenty-nine and terrified of him.””

Marcus said nothing.

They reached a rectangular concrete slab.

Daniel brushed away dust.

A metal plate appeared.

*17-B*

Vanessa stepped closer.

Her brass key trembled in her hand.

“That's it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Open it.””

She inserted the key.

It turned.

A heavy metallic click echoed beneath them.

A section of concrete shifted.

A narrow staircase appeared.

Cold air rose from below.

Isaiah whispered:

“Whoa.””

Marcus took his phone out and turned on the flashlight.

“Stay behind me.””

They descended.

The stairs seemed endless.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Daniel placed his hand against it.

“It's still here.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“The vault.””

The brass key opened the second lock.

The door groaned.

Inside were rows of metal cabinets.

Dust covered everything.

But one cabinet was clean.

Marcus walked toward it.

A white label was attached.

*CARTER*

His heart pounded.

He opened the drawer.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Vehicle transfer forms.

And a cassette recorder.

Marcus picked it up.

There was a handwritten note taped to it.

*For Marcus.*

He stared.

“That's my father's handwriting.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Play it.””

Marcus pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Leon Carter's voice.

“If you're hearing this, Marcus, you're old enough to understand why I disappeared from your life.””

Marcus froze.

Isaiah looked at him.

Leon continued.

“I need you to know one thing first.””

A pause.

“I never abandoned you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

His throat tightened.

His father continued.

“Your mother and I were trying to protect you.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Everything you were told about that dealership was a lie.””

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

Leon's voice continued.

“Richard Whitmore wasn't working alone.””

Daniel's face changed.

“There was another person.””

Marcus leaned toward the recorder.

“Who?””

The recording answered.

“Camille Reed.””

Vanessa staggered backward.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

Vanessa shook her head.

“My mother?””

The recording continued.

“Camille knew about the vehicles. She knew about the money. She knew where the records were.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

Leon said:

“But she wasn't the person who threatened us.””

Static crackled.

“Someone above her was.””

The recording cut out.

Marcus pressed play again.

Nothing.

“No.””

He struck the recorder lightly.

“Come on.””

Daniel picked up a document.

“Marcus.””

Marcus turned.

Daniel was holding a bank statement.

The account belonged to Richard Whitmore.

Large transfers appeared every month.

Millions of dollars.

Marcus scanned the names.

One recipient appeared repeatedly.

*Carter Family Trust.*

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked sick.

“I don't know.””

Marcus grabbed another document.

There was an account authorization.

His mother's signature.

But this time, the signature looked different.

Marcus compared it to the photograph.

“This one is forged.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“My mother forged it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Maybe.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She did.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I remember.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She used to sit at the kitchen table at night. She'd write the same signature over and over.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

Vanessa whispered:

“She was trying to make it look real.””

The room went silent.

Daniel opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph of Camille.

She was standing beside Richard Whitmore.

And between them was the gray-suited man.

Marcus's breath caught.

“That's him.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then at the name written underneath.

*Thomas Vale.*

Marcus repeated it.

“Thomas Vale.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know that name.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“Former chairman of the dealership group.””

Marcus stared.

“Former?””

“He supposedly died in 2014.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed to the photograph.

“My mother had another picture.””

“Of him?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

Marcus's eyes widened.

“That's impossible.””

“She told me he was alive.””

Daniel's face went pale.

“Where is your mother now?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She died six months ago.””

Marcus's phone vibrated.

All three turned.

Another message.

This time there was a photograph attached.

Marcus opened it.

His face went blank.

It showed the three of them standing inside the vault.

Taken from above.

A security camera.

Marcus slowly looked upward.

A tiny red light blinked in the ceiling.

Someone was watching them.

A message appeared.

*You found what Leon hid.*

Then another.

*Now give me Vanessa.*

Vanessa stepped backward.

Marcus moved in front of her.

“No.””

The lights inside the vault suddenly turned red.

A deep mechanical hum started beneath the floor.

Daniel looked toward the steel door.

“It locked.””

Marcus grabbed the handle.

It wouldn't move.

Isaiah's breathing quickened.

“Dad…”

Marcus pulled him close.

“I'm here.””

A speaker crackled overhead.

Then a man's voice filled the vault.

Calm.

Older.

Almost amused.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

“Thomas Vale?””

A pause.

Then the voice answered.

“Yes.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“You threatened my father.””

“I did.””

“You framed him.””

“I did.””

“You threatened my family.””

“No.””

The voice paused.

“I protected something much more valuable.””

Marcus looked around the vault.

“What?””

A soft laugh echoed through the room.

“Your father wasn't the target, Marcus.””

The speaker crackled.

“He was the witness.””

The vault lights went completely black.

And in the darkness, a final sentence came through the speaker.

“Your mother was the one who made the deal.””
