Chapter 2: The Secret Before the Scream
The officer raised the volume.
Daniel heard his own voice again, slightly muffled by the recording.
“If Dad finds out about the money, I'll tell him myself. But not today.””
The hallway seemed to shrink around him.
Mia's face changed.
Not fear this time.
Recognition.
“Turn that off,” she said.
The officer kept listening.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where did that come from?””
Evelyn stood beside Arthur, her hand resting on her husband's shoulder.
“From the sitting room camera,” she answered.
“The one you forgot was connected to the house security system.””
“I didn't forget it.””
“Then you should have remembered it before you started shouting at your father.””
The officer continued playing the recording.
Daniel's voice came through again.
“I borrowed the money to keep the company running. I'm paying it back. Nobody needs to know.””
A second voice followed.
Mia's.
“You promised me we were finished hiding things from him.””
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
The officer paused the playback.
“Mr. Carter,” he said, “can you explain what we're hearing?””
Daniel looked at Mia.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
It was a warning.
A plea.
Perhaps both.
“That conversation has nothing to do with what happened today,” Daniel said.
Evelyn gave a humorless laugh.
“Nothing to do with it? Arthur came downstairs this morning because he discovered the missing funds. He asked you a question, and you told him you would explain everything. Then you brought Mia into the conversation.””
“That isn't how it happened.””
“Then let's watch.””
The officer restarted the recording.
The image showed the sitting room from an elevated angle. Morning sunlight fell across the leather furniture. Arthur stood beside the fireplace, holding a folder. Daniel paced near the windows, his navy suit jacket unbuttoned, his burgundy shirt open at the collar.
Mia sat on the sofa, her hands folded in her lap.
Arthur's recorded voice was calm.
“Daniel, the company account is short by two hundred and eighty thousand dollars. I want to know where it went.””
Daniel stopped pacing.
“I told you. It was a temporary transfer.””
“To where?””
“An investment account.””
“Whose account?””
Daniel looked away.
Arthur set the folder on the table.
“Son, look at me.””
Daniel finally turned.
“I'm handling it.””
“That's not an answer.””
Mia rose from the sofa.
“Arthur, you're interrogating him like he's a child.””
Arthur looked at her.
“This is my company. That money was reserved for payroll and the expansion project.””
“And Daniel is your son.””
“Which is why I'm giving him the opportunity to explain before I involve the board.””
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Dad, I made a mistake.””
Arthur's expression softened slightly.
“What kind of mistake?””
“I moved the money to cover a private debt. I thought I'd replace it before anyone noticed.””
Arthur was silent.
Then he asked, “How much of it is left?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Mia stepped between them.
“He was trying to protect this family.””
Arthur's voice hardened.
“By stealing from his own company?””
“Don't call him a thief!””
“Then tell me where the money is.””
Mia stared at him.
The recording continued.
Arthur picked up the folder and opened it.
“These transfers were made over four months. Some of the payments went to a company registered under your name, Mia.””
The color drained from her face.
Daniel turned toward her.
“What?””
Mia looked at him quickly.
“I can explain.””
Arthur held up a page.
“Your husband moved the money, but you signed the receiving documents. I want to know whether you understood what you were signing.””
Mia's jaw tightened.
“You have no right to accuse me.””
“I haven't accused you of anything. I'm asking a question.””
“Then ask your son!””
“I have.””
Arthur turned toward Daniel.
“Did she know?””
Daniel stared at the floor.
The silence answered for him.
Mia took a step back.
“You said you had handled the paperwork.””
“I did handle it,” Daniel replied.
“You told me it was a legitimate investment.””
“It was supposed to be.””
“Supposed to be?””
Arthur closed the folder.
“That's enough. Daniel, we're going to the board this afternoon. You'll explain the transfers, and we'll determine how to restore the funds.””
Mia's voice became quieter.
“And if he can't?””
Arthur looked directly at her.
“Then the company will take whatever legal action is necessary.””
The footage ended.
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at the phone in the officer's hand.
He remembered that conversation. He remembered every word. He had borrowed money to cover a debt from a failed investment, then transferred company funds to keep his creditors from discovering how badly he had miscalculated.
He'd told himself he could fix everything before anyone noticed.
He'd told Mia that too.
But when Arthur discovered the transfers, Daniel panicked.
And Mia had panicked with him.
“Why was this recording saved?”” Daniel asked his mother.
Evelyn's eyes glistened.
“Because your father knew something was wrong. He asked me to make sure the security system kept its recordings. He thought you might need protection from a mistake you were too ashamed to admit.””
Daniel swallowed.
“He was protecting me?””
“He was trying to.””
Arthur finally turned away from the window.
His forehead had been cleaned, but a thin line of blood still marked the edge of the cloth. He looked exhausted.
“I didn't want to destroy you, Daniel,” he said.
“I wanted you to tell the truth before the lie became bigger than you could manage.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Why didn't you tell me you were recording everything?””
Arthur gave him a weary look.
“Because a father shouldn't need a camera to prove that he's telling the truth to his own son.””
Daniel lowered his gaze.
Mia let out a sharp breath.
“This is insane. You're all acting as if I planned some elaborate scheme.””
The officer turned toward her.
“Ma'am, did you sign documents connected to these transfers?””
Mia folded her arms.
“I signed documents my husband gave me.””
“Did you know the money came from the company?””
“I was told it was an investment.””
“By whom?””
She looked at Daniel.
He didn't answer for her.
For the first time that morning, he didn't rush to rescue her.
Mia's eyes narrowed.
“Daniel?””
He looked at the officer.
“I told her the money was an investment. I didn't tell her it came from the company account.””
Mia stared at him in disbelief.
“You're throwing me under the bus?””
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
“I'm answering the question.””
“You know what we agreed!””
The hallway went silent.
The officer's expression changed.
“What agreement are you referring to?””
Mia's lips parted.
She realized her mistake too late.
Daniel turned toward her.
“What agreement, Mia?””
She looked at him as though he had betrayed her simply by asking.
Then she laughed once, a brittle sound that didn't resemble amusement.
“You want the truth? Fine. You want to know why I was afraid of your father?””
Arthur watched her without speaking.
Mia stepped closer to Daniel.
“Because he was going to take everything away from us. The house. The company.
Our future. He was going to make sure you had nothing.””
“That doesn't explain the blouse,” Daniel replied.
Her eyes flashed.
“You think this is funny?””
“No.””
“You think I wanted to do that?””
Daniel looked at the torn silk hanging from her shoulders.
“I think you did it.””
Mia's face tightened.
For a moment, the frightened woman from the beginning of the morning disappeared. In her place stood someone angry that the people around her had stopped accepting her version of events.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed for you,” she said.
“Then tell us.””
She looked toward the officers.
Then toward Evelyn.
Finally, her eyes settled on Arthur.
“You want to know what I sacrificed? I kept quiet when your son was drowning in debt. I stood beside him when he couldn't sleep.
I listened to him promise that he would fix everything. I agreed to help him because he said his father would never forgive him if he knew.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“Help me how?””
Mia's eyes flickered.
“You know how.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“I don't.””
She stared at him.
Then she turned to the officers.
“I want a lawyer.””
“That's your right,” the officer replied.
“But we still need to document what happened today.””
One officer guided Mia toward the entrance while the other remained with Daniel and his parents. She didn't resist, but she kept looking over her shoulder.
At the doorway, she stopped.
“Daniel, if you let them do this to me, you'll regret it.””
He didn't move.
She waited for him to say something.
Anything.
He had spent years protecting her from consequences, smoothing over arguments, believing that love meant standing beside your spouse even when the truth was uncomfortable.
But his father was sitting ten feet away with a wound on his forehead.
And Daniel had put it there.
Mia finally walked out with the officer.
The front door closed.
For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the air-conditioning.
Then Arthur struggled to rise.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Let me help you.””
Arthur lifted one hand.
“Stay where you are.””
Daniel stopped.
His father adjusted his glasses and leaned on Evelyn's arm.
“There's something else you need to know,” Arthur said.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“What?””
Arthur looked toward the closed front door.
“The missing money isn't the worst part.””
He paused, gathering his breath.
“The worst part is that Mia didn't come into this house planning to leave with you.””
Daniel stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Arthur's expression was full of a sorrow Daniel couldn't understand.
Then he reached into his green suit jacket and pulled out a folded document.
At the top was the name of a company Daniel had never heard of.
Beneath it were three signatures.
One belonged to Mia.
One belonged to a man named Marcus Reed.
And the third—
May you like
Daniel recognized immediately.
It was his own.
