Chapter 6: The Evidence in the Dark

Daniel couldn't look away from the photograph.

David Reed lay on his side beside the loading dock, his face turned partly toward the camera. One arm was stretched across the concrete. The other disappeared beneath his body.

A dark stain marked the collar of his shirt.

Daniel forced himself to breathe.

“Is he dead?”” he asked.

Leon Brooks didn't answer.

“Leon. Is David Reed dead?””

The former warehouse supervisor closed the folder.

“I don't know.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You took a photograph of a man lying unconscious on the ground, and you don't know?””

“I wasn't a doctor.””

“Then why didn't you call an ambulance?””

Leon's jaw tightened.

“Because your father told me not to.””

The words seemed to stop the air in Daniel's lungs.

Mia stepped between them.

“Leon, that's enough.””

He turned toward her.

“You don't get to tell me what's enough.””

“I told you I was coming alone.””

“And I told you this was the last time I'd protect you.””

Daniel looked from one to the other.

“You know each other.””

Neither answered.

He stepped toward Leon.

“How long have you been working with Mia?””

Leon gave a bitter laugh.

“Working with her? You think this was a partnership?””

He opened the folder again and removed a second photograph.

This one showed the warehouse loading dock from farther away. Arthur stood beside a dark sedan, his green suit visible beneath the harsh security lights. David was nowhere in sight.

Mia appeared near the passenger door.

Daniel recognized the coat she had worn in the first photograph.

Leon placed the images side by side.

“Your father came here that night to meet David. Mia arrived twenty minutes later. I was the supervisor on duty. I saw the argument, and I saw David leave the building with your father.””

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“Where did they go?””

“I don't know.””

“Did Dad hurt him?””

Leon looked down.

“I heard a struggle. Then I saw Arthur come back alone.””

Mia shook her head.

“You didn't see what happened after that.””

“No,” Leon replied.

“Because you told me to stay inside.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why would you tell him that?””

Mia's lips trembled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what your father would do if he knew I had copies of the records.””

Leon struck the folder against his palm.

“Stop pretending this was all about fear. You came back the next day looking for the notebook.””

Mia went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

“What notebook?””

She said nothing.

Leon answered for her.

“David kept a small black notebook with account numbers, dates, and names. He told me it was insurance. If anything happened to him, the notebook would expose everyone involved.””

“Where is it?””

Leon looked toward the dark interior of the warehouse.

“That's what we've been trying to find.””

Daniel took a step toward the door.

Mia caught his arm.

“No.””

He turned.

“You said there was something inside you needed to show me.””

“I lied.””

The admission came out in a whisper.

Daniel stared at her.

“Of course you did.””

“Daniel, please. You don't understand what we're dealing with.””

“Then explain it!””

His voice bounced off the brick walls.

For a moment, Mia seemed to shrink beneath it.

Then she straightened.

“Your father wasn't the only person who wanted David gone. There were people above him. People who had invested in the company and were using the pension reserve to finance other businesses. David found the transfers and threatened to expose them.””

“Who?””

“I never learned all their names.””

“But you knew enough to help move the money.””

“Yes.””

“And enough to forge my signature.””

Her eyes filled again.

“I didn't forge it. Marcus did.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Marcus forged my signature?””

“He had access to your old corporate documents. He said he could reproduce it.””

“Why would he need my signature?””

“Because the investment vehicle was supposed to become the legal owner of the transferred funds. With your signature on the authorization, it would look as if you approved the transaction.””

Daniel felt the pieces of the scheme shifting into place.

Marcus had wanted access to the company.

Mia had wanted the pension records.

Someone had used Daniel's name to move money.

And his father had been at the warehouse the night David disappeared.

But one question remained.

“Why did you accuse Dad of assaulting you this morning?””

Mia looked at the ground.

“Because I saw him carrying the folder.””

“What folder?””

“The original pension records. I thought he was going to hand them to the board. If he did, Marcus would lose control of the company, and I'd lose the only leverage I had.””

“So you decided to make him look like a criminal.””

“I thought you'd believe me long enough to get the folder away from him.””

Daniel took a slow step backward.

“You weren't protecting yourself. You were protecting your plan.””

Mia didn't deny it.

Leon suddenly looked toward the street.

“We need to go.””

Daniel turned.

“Why?””

“Because that car has been parked outside for twenty minutes.””

He pointed toward the warehouse entrance.

A black SUV sat beneath a broken streetlight, its windows dark. Daniel hadn't noticed it when he arrived.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He wore a charcoal overcoat and carried no visible weapon. His movements were calm, deliberate. He looked like someone arriving for a business meeting rather than someone approaching three people hiding inside an abandoned warehouse.

Leon swore under his breath.

“That's one of them.””

“Who?”” Daniel asked.

“Graham Voss.””

Daniel recognized the name.

Voss was a major investor in Carter Industries, a wealthy financier who had attended several company events. Arthur had once described him as a man who could smell a weakness in a business before anyone else noticed it.

Graham stopped outside the warehouse door.

“Leon,” he called.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

Leon stepped deeper into the shadows.

“You're mistaken.””

Graham smiled faintly.

“I'm rarely mistaken about money.””

His eyes shifted toward Daniel.

“Daniel Carter. I've been hoping we'd meet.””

Daniel kept his voice steady.

“What do you want?””

“The same thing your father wanted three years ago. A little cooperation.””

“You were involved in David Reed's disappearance?””

Graham's expression barely changed.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“Then answer the question.””

Graham looked at Mia.

“Your wife seems to have told you quite a bit.””

Daniel glanced at her.

Mia looked terrified.

“Don't listen to him,” she whispered.

Graham ignored her.

“Your father made a deal with David Reed. David was supposed to transfer his shares, accept a settlement, and leave the company. He agreed to the terms, then changed his mind.””

“Because the pension money had been stolen.””

“Because he wanted more money.””

“You have proof of that?””

Graham's smile disappeared.

“I have proof that David was preparing to expose a number of confidential transactions. Transactions that would have destroyed Carter Industries and cost thousands of people their jobs.””

“So you silenced him?””

“We contained a problem.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don't get to call a man's disappearance a problem.””

Graham's eyes hardened.

“Your father understood the stakes. He knew that if David went public, the company would collapse. He had employees, suppliers, families depending on him. He made a difficult choice.””

“Where is David?””

Graham glanced at Leon.

“Ask the man who helped clean the warehouse.””

Leon lunged toward him.

“You son of a—”

Daniel caught Leon's arm.

“Wait!””

Graham took one step backward, then reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on a nearby crate.

“Inside are copies of the original transfer records. If you want to know what happened to David, read them. But I suggest you do it without your father present.””

Daniel didn't touch the envelope.

“Why give them to me?””

“Because your father has spent three years lying to you, and I suspect you're finally ready to understand why.””

Graham turned toward the exit.

Then he stopped.

“One more thing, Daniel. If you take those documents to the police, your father won't be the only person whose life falls apart.””

He looked directly at Mia.

“Your wife knows what happened after David left the warehouse.””

Mia's face went white.

Graham walked toward his SUV.

Daniel watched him leave.

Then he turned to Mia.

“What happened after David left?””

She shook her head violently.

“He's trying to manipulate you.””

“Tell me the truth.””

“I can't.””

“Can't, or won't?””

Mia pressed both hands against her face.

“I saw David get into the car with your father. I saw them drive away. I didn't see what happened after that.””

Leon stared at her.

“That's not what you told me.””

Mia lowered her hands.

“I never said I knew what happened to him.””

“You said you saw him leave the warehouse alive.””

“I did.””

Leon opened his mouth, then stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“What aren't you telling me?””

Leon looked toward the door through which Graham had disappeared.

“I didn't clean the warehouse that night.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Then why did Graham say you did?””

“Because I went back the following morning. There was blood on the loading dock, broken glass near the office, and a set of keys beneath the stairs.””

“Whose keys?””

“David's.””

Daniel looked at the photographs again.

“Did you find the notebook?””

Leon shook his head.

“No. But I found something else.””

He reached into his jacket and removed a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside lay a brass key attached to a faded blue tag.

Daniel recognized the logo on the tag immediately.

It belonged to the private storage facility Carter Industries had used for archived contracts and confidential records.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the pocket of David's coat. The coat was left in the warehouse.””

Daniel took the bag.

“What does it open?””

“Unit 214.””

Mia stepped forward.

“Leon, no.””

He looked at her.

“You've had three years to tell the truth. I'm finished protecting you.””

Daniel studied the key.

The storage facility might contain the notebook, the pension records, or proof of what had happened to David.

He slipped the evidence bag into his pocket.

“We're going there.””

Mia grabbed his sleeve.

“Daniel, if you open that unit, you'll destroy your father.””

Daniel looked at her hand until she released him.

“My father may have done terrible things. I won't protect him from the truth.””

“You don't know what you're saying.””

“Then tell me what I'm missing.””

Mia's lips parted.

For one brief moment, it seemed she was about to confess everything.

Instead, she stepped back and whispered, “If you go to that storage facility, you may find out that David Reed never disappeared.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Mia looked toward the warehouse floor.

“I saw him three weeks ago.””

The words seemed to echo long after she stopped speaking.

Leon stared at her in disbelief.

Daniel felt his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

“Where?””

Mia looked up.

“In a hospital.””

“Which hospital?””

She hesitated.

Then she gave him the name.

Daniel pulled out his phone and called the hospital's main line.

He asked for patient records, then for security, then for anyone who could confirm whether a man named David Reed had been admitted three weeks earlier.

After several minutes, a hospital administrator came on the line.

“I'm sorry, sir. I can't disclose private patient information.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Please. I'm his family.””

There was a pause.

Then the administrator said, “Mr. Carter, I can tell you that a patient matching that name was admitted under protective custody. However, he was discharged yesterday.””

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Discharged to whom?””

“I'm not authorized to provide that information.””

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Yesterday.

David Reed had been alive yesterday.

He turned toward Mia.

“Why didn't you tell anyone?””

Her face crumpled.

“Because he told me not to.””

“Why?””

Mia looked at the envelope Graham had left behind.

“Because he said the person who tried to kill him was still looking for him.””

A noise came from outside.

Tires screeched against the pavement.

Leon rushed to the entrance, but the black SUV was already gone.

The envelope lay untouched on the crate.

Daniel opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was a single document.

It was a hospital discharge authorization dated the previous day.

The patient's name was David Reed.

The person who had signed him out was listed beneath it.

*Arthur Carter.*

Daniel stared at the signature.

His father had found David.

His father had brought him out of the hospital.

And somehow, after three years of silence, Arthur had kept the truth from his own son one more time.

Then Daniel noticed the final line on the document.

*Destination after discharge: Carter family residence.*

He looked toward the warehouse entrance.

His phone began to ring.

The caller ID showed his mother's name.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Mom?””

Evelyn was crying.

“Daniel, listen to me carefully. Your father has brought someone home.””

“David Reed?””

A sharp breath came through the speaker.

“Yes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then Evelyn whispered the words that made his blood run cold.

“Your father says David is here to tell the truth about what happened three years ago. But Daniel, there's something wrong. David keeps asking for Mia.””

May you like

She paused.

“And he says she was the last person he saw before someone tried to kill him.””
