Chapter 7: The Man Waiting in His Father's House
“Mom, get away from him.””
Daniel spoke so sharply that Evelyn stopped crying for a moment.
“What?””
“Take Dad and get out of the house. Go somewhere public. Don't let David out of your sight, and don't let anyone leave with him.””
“Daniel, he's barely able to stand. Your father says he's been through something terrible.””
“Then why is he asking for Mia?””
Evelyn fell silent.
Daniel stood inside the abandoned warehouse, staring at the hospital discharge authorization. The paper trembled between his fingers. Three years of unanswered questions had suddenly become a living person sitting in his parents' home.
David Reed was alive.
And according to Mia, he had spent the past three weeks in a hospital under protective custody.
“Mom, listen to me,” Daniel said.
“Did Dad explain where he found him?””
“He said David contacted him two days ago. He wouldn't tell me anything else.””
“Did David say who hurt him?””
“No. He's been asking for Mia since he arrived.””
Daniel looked toward the warehouse entrance, where the black SUV had disappeared.
“I'm coming home.””
“Daniel, there's something else.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“Your father has locked his study.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“I don't know. He took David inside and told me not to interrupt them. When I asked what was happening, he said some things were too dangerous to discuss in front of the family.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Even now, Arthur was keeping secrets.
“Mom, don't confront him. Just stay where you are until I get there.””
He ended the call and turned toward Mia.
She was standing beside Leon, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. Her face had gone pale, and the tears she had cried earlier were gone.
“David is alive,” Daniel said.
Mia nodded.
“I know.””
“You knew he was in the hospital.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my father brought him home.””
“I suspected he would.””
Daniel stared at her.
“How long have you been lying to me?””
She looked down.
“Since before we met.””
The answer was so quiet that Daniel almost wished he hadn't heard it.
He stepped away from her.
“I'm going home. You're coming with me.””
Mia shook her head.
“I can't.””
“You're going to explain everything to David.””
“If I go back there, someone will die.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?””
She didn't answer.
He reached for his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Mia grabbed his wrist.
“No!””
He looked at her hand.
“Let go.””
“Daniel, please. You don't understand what Graham Voss is capable of. If the police arrive before David explains what happened, Graham will make sure none of us ever gets another chance to speak.””
“Then tell me what happened!””
Mia's eyes filled again.
“I can't explain it here.””
“Of course you can't.””
He pulled his wrist free.
For a moment, she looked as though she might collapse. Then she reached into her coat and withdrew a small brass key.
It was identical to the one Leon had given Daniel.
“I have another key,” she whispered.
“Unit 214. David gave it to me three years ago.””
Daniel stared at it.
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I was afraid of what was inside.””
“What is inside?””
“The original notebook. And a letter David wrote before he disappeared.””
Daniel extended his hand.
“Give it to me.””
Mia hesitated.
Then she placed the key in his palm.
“Don't open the unit without reading the letter first.””
Daniel closed his fingers around the key.
“Where's the letter?””
“Hidden in the house.””
He stared at her.
“Which house?””
Mia swallowed.
“Your parents' house. Behind the portrait in your father's study.””
Daniel felt the cold return to his stomach.
Before he could ask another question, Mia's phone rang.
She looked at the screen and went rigid.
Daniel caught the name.
Graham Voss.
He gestured for her to answer.
She shook her head.
“Answer it,” he ordered.
Mia pressed the button.
“Hello?””
Graham's voice came through the speaker, smooth and unhurried.
“Mia, darling. Have you found what I asked you to find?””
She didn't answer.
“Don't make me ask twice.””
Daniel moved closer.
Mia glanced at him, then spoke.
“I found Daniel.””
“Excellent. And the key?””
She looked at Daniel's closed fist.
“I have it.””
Graham laughed softly.
“Then bring it to me. We can finish this tonight.””
“What about David?””
A pause.
“What about him?””
“You said he was gone.””
“He should have been.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Mia's voice trembled.
“You told me he was dead.””
“I told you what you needed to believe.””
“Did you try to kill him?””
Graham's tone changed.
“Be very careful, Mia. You have spent three years living comfortably because I chose to let you. Don't confuse my patience with affection.””
The call ended.
Daniel stared at her.
“You've been working for him.””
Mia shook her head.
“Not willingly.””
“You just asked him whether he tried to kill David.””
“Because I finally need to know.””
Daniel backed away.
“You don't get to become innocent just because you're frightened.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“I knew Graham was moving money through the company. I knew he was using David's pension investigation to blackmail your father. But I didn't know he would have David attacked. I swear to you, Daniel, I didn't know.””
“Then why did you help him?””
Mia looked at the concrete floor.
“Because three years ago, he showed me a document proving my father had been involved in the original pension transfers.””
Daniel went still.
“Your father?””
Mia nodded.
“My father was a regional finance director at Carter Industries. He approved some of the early transfers before he realized what they were being used for. When he tried to withdraw his approval, Graham threatened to expose him as the person responsible.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“Was your father guilty?””
“He made mistakes. But he wasn't the mastermind. Graham used him, then used me.””
“And marrying me was part of the plan?””
“At first.””
The honesty was brutal.
Mia took a shaky breath.
“Then I fell in love with you. And every day I stayed, the truth became harder to tell. I thought I could recover the evidence and leave before anyone discovered what I'd done.””
“You tore your blouse and framed my father.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe he was a monster.””
“I know.””
“You watched me hurt him.””
Mia covered her mouth.
“I know.””
Daniel looked away.
There was no apology that could undo the image of his father sitting against the wall, blood on his forehead, unable to understand why his own son had attacked him.
He opened the car door.
“Get in.””
Mia hesitated.
“Daniel—”
“If David is at my parents' house, we're going to hear what he has to say. All of it.””
They drove in silence.
By the time they reached the Carter residence, the sun had dropped behind the neighboring buildings. The front windows glowed with warm light, but the house felt different to Daniel now. The photographs on the walls, the polished floors, the expensive furniture—everything seemed to conceal a second story beneath the first.
Evelyn opened the door before they knocked.
Her eyes moved from Daniel to Mia.
“Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered.
Daniel couldn't tell whether she was speaking to him or to the woman standing beside him.
“Where's Dad?””
“In his study.””
“And David?””
“Inside with him.””
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
The marble floor had been cleaned. The torn emerald thread was gone. Someone had removed the bloodstained cloth from the console table.
Yet Daniel could still see the morning as clearly as if it were happening again.
Evelyn touched his arm.
“Your father asked me to give you this.””
She handed him a folded piece of paper.
Daniel opened it.
His father's handwriting filled the page.
If you are reading this, then David has told you enough to make you question everything I have done. Don't trust Graham Voss. Don't trust the documents he gives you. And above all, don't let Mia leave this house until you know why David disappeared.
Daniel looked up.
“Why would Dad write that?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Because David told him something before they came home. Something that made your father afraid.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel folded the letter.
Then he noticed the study door.
It was slightly open.
From inside came Arthur's voice.
“You promised me you would tell the truth.””
A second voice answered.
“I am telling the truth.””
David.
Daniel moved closer.
Arthur spoke again.
“Then tell my son why you disappeared.””
Silence followed.
Then David said five words that made Daniel stop breathing.
“Because I killed your brother.””
Daniel's hand froze on the doorknob.
His brother.
May you like
He had no brother.
At least, that was what his father had always told him.
