Chapter 5: The Wife Who Knew Too Much

Daniel didn't leave his office for nearly an hour.

The photographs lay spread across his desk. Tasha stood near the windows, watching the traffic crawl through the streets below, while Robert sat rigidly in a chair with his hands clasped between his knees.

Nobody seemed willing to speak first.

Finally, Daniel picked up the photograph of Mia beside David's car.

“When was this taken?””

“Three years ago,” Tasha answered.

“The night my father disappeared.””

“Who took it?””

“My father. He kept a small digital camera in his car because he was collecting evidence of the pension transfers.””

Daniel examined the image.

Mia stood beside a black sedan, wearing a cream coat and holding a folder against her chest. Her hair was longer than it was now, but there was no mistaking her face.

Behind her, the warehouse loading doors stood open.

A second figure appeared in the shadows near the entrance.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who's that?””

Tasha shook her head.

“I don't know. The original image is blurry. My father enlarged it, but the face was never clear.””

Daniel placed the photograph down.

“Why didn't you take this to the police?””

“I did.””

“And?””

“They told me the picture didn't prove a crime had occurred. They interviewed my father before he disappeared. They interviewed Arthur.

They interviewed the warehouse manager. Everyone had an explanation, and nobody had enough evidence to make an arrest.””

“What about Mia?””

Tasha's mouth tightened.

“She said she was there because she had been helping your father organize a charity event. She claimed she left before David arrived.””

Robert cleared his throat.

“That was consistent with the statement she gave me.””

Tasha turned toward him.

“You prepared her statement too?””

“I was representing Carter Industries.””

“You were representing whoever paid you.””

Robert rose.

“I understand that you're angry, but you cannot accuse me of participating in a crime without evidence.””

Tasha looked at him coldly.

“That's exactly what everyone told me when I asked them to investigate my father's disappearance.””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Enough. Both of you.””

The words came out sharper than he intended.

He immediately regretted them.

Tasha looked at him with an expression that reminded him of his father.

“Be careful, Mr. Carter. You have a habit of silencing people when you don't like what they're saying.””

Daniel flinched.

She was right.

He took a slow breath.

“I'm sorry. You're right. Please continue.””

Tasha returned to the desk.

“My father was supposed to meet someone at the warehouse that night. He never told me who. He only said he had found proof that the pension money had been moved through a company connected to Arthur.””

“The same company Mia used?”” Daniel asked.

“The same one.””

“Do you have the original financial records?””

“I have copies. The originals disappeared from my father's office.””

Daniel turned toward Robert.

“Did Dad know Mia before she and I met?””

Robert hesitated.

“I believe they met at a charity fundraiser.””

“When?””

“About three years ago.””

Daniel calculated the timeline.

Mia had entered his life shortly after David disappeared. They had met at a corporate charity event, started dating within months, and married eighteen months later.

He had always thought their relationship began with a chance conversation beside a silent auction table.

Now he wondered whether she had known his name before he ever introduced himself.

“Robert,” he said, “I want every record of Mia's first contact with Carter Industries. Emails, visitor logs, meeting schedules, everything.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“I'll see what I can find.””

“And I want a copy of every document connected to David's share transfer.””

“I'll arrange it.””

Tasha folded her arms.

“There's something else you need to know.””

Daniel turned to her.

“My father wasn't the only person who disappeared.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“This is a list of employees who worked at the warehouse during the month David vanished. Three of them left the company within six weeks. One moved out of state.

One withdrew his retirement savings. The third stopped answering calls.””

“Who was the third?””

“Leon Brooks. He was the warehouse supervisor.””

Daniel knew the name.

Leon had been a quiet, dependable employee who'd worked for Carter Industries for more than twenty years. Daniel remembered seeing him at company functions, usually standing near the back of the room with a paper cup of coffee.

“He left because of a family emergency,” Daniel said.

“That's what the company told everyone,” Tasha replied.

“But my father had written his name in a notebook beside a list of unexplained withdrawals.””

Robert's face tightened.

“What notebook?””

Tasha studied him.

“So you know about it.””

Robert stood too quickly, knocking his chair backward.

“I need to make a call.””

“Sit down,” Daniel said.

Robert stopped.

Daniel's voice was quiet, but there was no mistaking the authority in it.

“Not until you answer the question.””

Robert looked from Daniel to Tasha.

Then he sat.

“I know David kept a notebook. I never saw it. Arthur told me it contained private financial information and that it had been returned to David's family.””

Tasha shook her head.

“My family never received it.””

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from a number he recognized.

Mia.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

A second message followed.

*I can explain everything. But you have to listen to me before your father destroys us.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Tasha saw the name.

“Is that her?””

He nodded.

“Don't go alone,” Tasha said.

“I need answers.””

“And if she gives you another lie?””

Daniel looked at the photograph of Mia beside David's car.

“Then I'll know what I'm dealing with.””

He sent a message asking where she wanted to meet.

Her reply arrived almost immediately.

*The old warehouse on Mercer Street. Six o'clock.*

Tasha went pale.

“What?””

Daniel showed her the screen.

“That warehouse has been closed for years,” she said.

“It's where my father was last seen.””

Robert stood.

“Daniel, absolutely not. If Mia is involved in David's disappearance, going there could put you in danger.””

“If I call the police, she'll disappear before I get a chance to speak with her.””

“You have no idea what she's capable of.””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“Neither do you.””

He gathered the documents, placed them in a secure folder, and locked it in his desk drawer. Then he called the company security director and instructed him to preserve all financial records connected to the investment vehicle.

He also asked Tasha to send copies of her documents to an independent attorney.

For once, he would not rely on a single person's explanation.

At five-thirty, Daniel drove toward Mercer Street.

The old warehouse stood beyond a row of shuttered businesses, its brick walls darkened by years of rain. Weeds pushed through cracks in the parking lot. A faded Carter Industries sign hung above the entrance, one corner broken loose.

He parked beneath a streetlamp.

Mia was already there.

She stood beside a silver car, wearing a black coat over a simple blouse. Her hair was pulled into a sleek bun, and her face looked almost ordinary beneath the yellow light.

When Daniel stepped out, she exhaled sharply.

“You came.””

“You asked me to.””

“I wasn't sure you would.””

Daniel kept several feet between them.

“Tell me about David Reed.””

Mia looked down.

For a moment, he thought she might finally tell the truth.

Then she looked up, and the fear in her eyes made him uneasy.

“Your father is lying to you.””

“Which part?””

“Everything.””

“Did you know David before you met me?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

The admission hit him harder than he expected.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

“Six months before you met me?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

Mia rubbed her hands together.

“David contacted me because he needed help. He believed your father had stolen money from the company pension fund. He thought I could get close enough to Arthur to find out where the records were being kept.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So you approached me to get to my father?””

“Not at first.””

“Don't.””

His voice cracked.

“Don't try to soften it. You met me because of my family.””

Mia's eyes filled.

“I didn't expect to fall in love with you.””

“Did you ever love me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you help steal company money?””

She looked away.

“I didn't steal it. I moved it.””

“That's the same thing when it isn't yours.””

“I was trying to protect the evidence.””

“By putting the money in an account under your name?””

“By keeping it away from your father!””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You signed documents with Marcus Reed. You used my name. You tore your own clothes and accused my father of attacking you.””

Mia flinched.

“I panicked.””

“You planned it.””

“I didn't plan for you to hurt him!””

The words echoed through the empty parking lot.

Daniel went still.

Mia covered her mouth.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Daniel asked, “What did you mean?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“You just admitted you knew I might hurt him.””

“I knew you were angry. I knew you would believe me.””

“Why?””

“Because you always did!””

Her voice rose, then broke.

“Every time I cried, you defended me. Every time your father questioned me, you took my side. I thought if I could make him look dangerous, you would finally stop listening to him long enough for me to get the documents.””

Daniel felt sick.

“You used my love for you as a weapon.””

Mia's tears spilled over.

“I thought I could fix everything afterward.””

“You could have told me the truth.””

“You would have told your father!””

“Yes!””

“And he would have destroyed me!””

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, he saw the calculation beneath her desperation. She hadn't merely feared Arthur. She had feared losing control of the story she had constructed.

“Where is David?”” he asked.

Mia's expression changed.

“I don't know.””

“Did you see him the night he disappeared?””

She hesitated.

“Mia.””

“Yes.””

“Was he alive when you left the warehouse?””

Her eyes filled with a different kind of fear.

“I didn't hurt him.””

“That's not what I asked.””

She took a step toward him.

“Daniel, you need to understand. I arrived after your father and David were already arguing. I heard shouting. I saw your father holding a folder, and David was bleeding from his mouth.””

Daniel's heart hammered.

“What happened next?””

“David told Arthur he had copies of the pension records. He said he would go to the authorities unless Arthur restored his shares.””

“And Dad?””

“He told David that if he went to the police, everyone would learn what David had done with the money.””

“What had he done?””

Mia shook her head.

“I never found out.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You're telling me you were there, you heard them arguing about stolen money, and you still married me without telling me any of this?””

“I was trying to find the original records.””

“Through me.””

“Yes.””

“And the transfers from my company account?””

Mia closed her eyes.

“I moved them because the investment vehicle was the only place I could preserve the money without your father's control.””

“You could have frozen the funds legally.””

“I didn't know whom I could trust.””

“You trusted me enough to marry me.””

Her face crumpled.

“I did love you.””

Daniel looked away.

He wanted to believe her.

That was the worst part.

Even after everything, some part of him still wanted to take her into his arms and pretend that the woman he loved had simply made one terrible mistake.

But the torn emerald blouse was still vivid in his mind. So was his father's blood on the marble.

Love could explain why Daniel had believed her.

It could not excuse what she had done.

“Where are the original pension records?”” he asked.

Mia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you ask me to meet you here?””

She looked toward the warehouse.

“Because there's something inside I need to show you.””

Daniel followed her gaze.

A side door stood slightly open.

From somewhere inside came the sound of metal scraping against concrete.

Mia's face drained of color.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “we need to leave.””

A man's voice emerged from the darkness.

“Mia?””

She grabbed Daniel's wrist.

“Don't answer him.””

The voice came again.

“You said you were coming alone.””

Daniel turned toward the doorway.

A tall silhouette stepped into the light.

The man carried a folder under one arm.

Daniel recognized him from the old company photographs.

Leon Brooks.

The warehouse supervisor who had disappeared three years earlier.

Leon stared at Daniel, then at Mia.

“You shouldn't have brought him here,” he said.

Mia's fingers tightened around Daniel's wrist.

Leon opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph of David Reed lying unconscious beside a warehouse loading dock.

And beneath it was a handwritten note bearing Arthur Carter's signature.
