Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.
The blue music box sat in Daniel's hands, its tiny brass hinges catching the light from the chandelier. Beside him, the folded document looked insignificant.
But Richard Bennett was staring at it as though it were a loaded weapon.
Olivia looked from Daniel to her father.
“What is that?””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“Something my mother kept for eleven years.””
Richard's voice was dangerously low.
“Put it down.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“I said put it down.””
“And my mother said I should give it to Olivia.””
Daniel approached the wheelchair and carefully placed the blue music box on Olivia's lap. Then he unfolded the document.
It was a legal agreement, yellowed at the edges, with several official seals.
Olivia couldn't understand most of the legal language.
But she recognized the signature.
Richard Bennett.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“Why did you sign this?””
Richard reached for the paper.
Olivia pulled it closer.
“Don't touch it!””
The words surprised even her.
Richard stopped.
Daniel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
“Your mother created a trust before she died. It was supposed to protect your future. The money, the house, and several properties were placed under your name.””
Olivia looked confused.
“Everything?””
“Not everything,” Daniel explained.
“But enough that you would never have to depend on anyone for anything.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“This is a ridiculous interpretation of a legal document.””
Daniel turned the paper around.
“Then explain the part where you agreed to act only as her temporary guardian of the estate.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
Mrs. Harris stepped closer.
“I remember the day Catherine signed those papers,” she said.
Richard turned toward her.
“Be careful.””
“No,” Mrs. Harris replied.
“I've been careful for eleven years.””
She looked at Olivia.
“Your mother wanted you to have choices. She didn't want your father controlling every part of your life.””
Richard slammed his palm against the piano.
“Catherine was dying! She was frightened! She was making decisions without understanding what would happen afterward!””
Daniel didn't raise his voice.
“Then why did you transfer the money?””
Silence.
Olivia stared at her father.
“What money?””
Daniel unfolded another sheet.
“According to these records, your father's company received several payments from the trust over the years. Some were described as loans. Others were listed as administrative expenses.””
Richard took a step toward him.
“Those transfers were legal.””
“Then why did your mother keep copies?”” Daniel asked.
Richard said nothing.
Olivia's eyes filled.
“Daddy, did you take my money?””
Richard crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, everything I did was to keep you safe. The medical bills, the specialists, this house, your education. Do you have any idea what it costs to take care of you?””
The words hung in the air.
Daniel's expression changed.
Mrs. Harris looked down.
Olivia stared at her father.
“Take care of me?””
Richard immediately realized what he had said.
“That's not what I meant.””
“But you said it.””
“Olivia, I have sacrificed everything for you.””
She touched the silver fabric of her gown.
“Did Mommy leave me money because she thought I would need it?””
“She wanted to make sure you were provided for.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
Richard rubbed his face.
“Because you were too young.””
“I'm not five anymore.””
For the first time, Richard had no answer.
Daniel gently opened the blue music box.
A tiny ballerina stood inside, frozen above a faded velvet base. When he wound the key, the mechanism produced three familiar notes.
Olivia gasped.
It was the melody from her mother's recording.
Underneath the velvet lining was a small compartment.
Daniel carefully lifted it.
Inside lay a second envelope and a miniature flash drive.
“My mother found the music box after your mother died,” Daniel explained.
“She couldn't get the documents to you because your father had threatened to have her arrested.””
Richard turned sharply.
“That is a lie.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then explain why my mother spent eleven years working two jobs because nobody would hire her after you accused her of stealing.””
Richard's face tightened.
“I never threatened her.””
Daniel pulled a folded letter from his jacket.
“This is the letter you sent her.””
He handed it to Mrs. Harris.
The housekeeper read the first few lines, and her hand began trembling.
“Richard,” she whispered.
“What?””
“This is your handwriting.””
Richard looked away.
Olivia reached for the letter.
Mrs. Harris hesitated, then placed it in her hands.
The letter contained a warning.
If Evelyn ever contacted Olivia or revealed the contents of Catherine's trust, Richard would pursue legal action and ensure she never worked in the city again.
Olivia read it twice.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Your mother kept this?””
Daniel nodded.
“She said she wanted you to know she hadn't abandoned you.””
He paused.
“She wanted you to know she tried.””
Olivia's tears finally spilled over.
Daniel reached for a tissue on the piano and placed it beside her hand.
He didn't tell her not to cry.
He didn't promise that everything would be fine.
He simply stayed.
Richard stood near the window, his shoulders rigid.
“You don't know the whole story,” he said.
Olivia looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
Richard's eyes moved to the blue music box.
“Your mother wasn't thinking clearly toward the end.””
“That's what you said about the papers.””
“She was under pressure.””
“From whom?””
He remained silent.
Daniel looked down at the flash drive.
“My mother said there was a video, too.””
Richard turned around.
“What video?””
“Your wife recorded it shortly before she died.””
Richard's face went pale.
Daniel examined the tiny label.
It had a date written in Catherine's handwriting.
The date was three days before the accident.
Olivia looked at him.
“Can we watch it?””
Daniel nodded.
Mrs. Harris found a laptop in the cabinet. Daniel inserted the flash drive.
A video appeared.
The screen showed Catherine sitting at the piano, wearing a pale blue cardigan. She looked tired, but her eyes were bright.
Olivia brought her hands to her mouth.
“Mommy.””
Catherine smiled into the camera.
“My darling girl. If you're watching this, then Evelyn has finally managed to get the truth to you.””
She glanced toward someone outside the frame.
Then she continued.
“Richard, if you're watching, I hope you understand why I did what I did.””
Richard's breathing became shallow.
Catherine's expression changed.
“I know you've been struggling. I know you believe you can fix everything by controlling it. But Olivia is not a problem to solve.””
She paused.
“She is our daughter.””
Olivia began sobbing quietly.
Catherine looked directly into the camera.
“There is something you don't know about the night of my accident.””
Richard suddenly lunged toward the laptop.
“Turn it off!””
Daniel caught the laptop before it fell.
“Don't!””
Richard grabbed his arm.
Olivia shouted.
“LET HIM GO!””
Richard froze.
The room became completely silent.
Daniel slowly pulled his arm away.
On the laptop, Catherine continued speaking.
“The accident was not caused by Olivia. It was caused by a decision Richard made that night.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Olivia looked at her father.
“What decision?””
The video stopped.
A black screen appeared.
Then a message flashed across it.
Additional recording unavailable. File corrupted.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That can't be right.””
He checked the flash drive.
There was another folder.
But it required a password.
Richard moved toward the laptop again.
“Give me that drive.””
Daniel closed his fist around it.
“No.””
Richard looked at Olivia.
“Sweetheart, we need to stop this. You're exhausted.””
Olivia shook her head.
“No, Daddy. I'm finally starting to understand.””
Daniel examined the password prompt.
There was a small hint beneath it.
The song your mother taught you.
Olivia looked at the blue music box.
Then she whispered the first words of the lullaby Catherine used to sing.
Daniel typed them.
The folder opened.
Inside was a single audio file.
But before anyone could press play, Richard spoke in a voice Olivia had never heard before.
“Don't listen to that recording.””
Olivia looked at him.
“Why?””
May you like
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“Because if you hear what happened that night, you'll never look at me the same way again.””
