Chapter 8: The Brother Nobody Told Her About

Daniel couldn't hear anything.

The kitchen was full of voices, but they sounded distant, as if everyone were speaking from the other side of a wall.

He stared at the silver bracelet on his wrist.

Two letters.

D.C.

His mother had told him the initials stood for Daniel Carter.

But the photograph in Olivia's hands suggested something else.

Daniel Catherine.

He looked at Reeves.

“Are you saying Catherine Bennett was my mother?””

Reeves nodded.

“I believe so.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. My mother was Evelyn.””

“Evelyn raised you,” Reeves replied.

“That isn't the same question.””

Daniel looked toward Thomas.

“Did you know?””

Thomas's expression crumpled.

“No.””

Richard turned away.

“This is ridiculous.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Daddy, is Daniel my brother?””

Richard said nothing.

She waited.

Then she asked again.

“Is he?””

Richard finally turned.

“Yes.””

The single word seemed to drain the air from the room.

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

Richard rubbed his face.

“Catherine was pregnant before the accident. She gave birth prematurely. The baby survived, but she was too weak to care for him.””

Daniel's voice became sharp.

“Then why did you let me grow up believing I had no father and no family?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because Evelyn agreed to take you.””

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

Thomas answered.

“Because Catherine trusted her.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your mother had helped Catherine through the pregnancy. When the doctors warned that Catherine might not survive, she made Evelyn promise to protect the baby.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“But my mother never told me.””

“Maybe she was waiting until she could prove everything,” Thomas replied.

Richard shook his head.

“Evelyn wasn't supposed to raise him forever.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“She was supposed to bring him back when the situation was settled.””

Daniel stared at him.

“And you never asked for me?””

Richard didn't answer.

“Not once?””

Silence.

Daniel looked down at his shoes.

For eleven years, he had imagined his father as someone who had simply walked away.

A man who had never wanted him.

Now he was standing in the house where his mother had given birth to him, discovering that his father had been close enough to hear him cry.

Yet had never come.

Olivia reached toward him.

“Daniel.””

He stepped away.

“Please don't.””

She lowered her hand.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

His voice was quiet.

“But you had a father. Even if he lied to you, he was there.””

Olivia looked at Richard.

“That's not what I call having a father.””

Daniel swallowed.

Then he turned toward Reeves.

“Do you have proof?””

Reeves nodded.

“I have the original birth certificate and a DNA report from the hospital archive. But I'd recommend an independent test before making any final decision.””

Richard suddenly became defensive.

“There's no need for that.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Why not?””

Richard didn't respond.

Olivia studied his face.

“Daddy, you knew Daniel was my brother.””

Richard sighed.

“I knew Catherine had another child.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He looked at her.

“I knew.””

Olivia felt something inside her break.

She looked at Daniel.

“Did you ever have a birthday party?””

Daniel gave a small, confused laugh.

“What?””

“A birthday party. With balloons and cake.””

He shrugged.

“Sometimes my mother baked something.””

“Did you ever get a present from your father?””

Daniel shook his head.

Olivia looked down at the silver bracelet.

“Neither did I.””

Daniel finally looked at her.

For a moment, the two children who had been separated by eleven years of lies stood facing each other.

One had grown up in a mansion.

The other had grown up in rented rooms and borrowed clothes.

But both had been deprived of the same thing.

Their mother.

Their family.

Their truth.

Mrs. Harris approached with two cups of hot chocolate.

She placed one beside Daniel.

Then she touched Olivia's shoulder.

“Your mother wanted you two to find each other.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Mrs. Harris shook her head.

“No, sweetheart. Catherine told very few people. She was afraid Richard would interfere.””

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

“I never intended for this to happen.””

Olivia turned.

“Then why did you let it happen?””

Richard's expression tightened.

“I thought Evelyn would eventually tell him.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She did. She tried.””

Richard didn't answer.

Reeves closed his briefcase.

“I need to speak with both of you privately. There are documents that require formal statements.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Not today.””

Reeves gave him a tired look.

“Richard, this is no longer your decision.””

He handed Olivia a business card.

Then he handed Daniel a second one.

“If either of you remembers anything or wants to provide a statement, call me directly.””

Daniel took the card.

Olivia looked at it.

“Will the police take my father away?””

Reeves paused.

“I don't know. That's for the investigators and prosecutors to determine.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Are you threatening me in my own home?””

“No,” Reeves replied.

“I'm telling you that the truth doesn't belong to this house anymore.””

He left.

Thomas followed him to the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

“Olivia, I owe you an apology.””

She looked at him.

“For what?””

“For disappearing. For letting your father tell you I was dead. I should have fought harder.””

Olivia nodded.

“Why didn't you?””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

He looked toward Richard.

“And fear made me selfish.””

Then he left.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Finally, Olivia turned to Daniel.

“Would you like to see something?””

Daniel shrugged.

“Sure.””

She led him toward the east wing.

The music room was filled with morning light now. Dust floated above the piano, and the blue music box remained open on the bench.

Olivia moved beside it.

“This was Mommy's favorite room.””

Daniel touched the piano.

“My mother told me about it.””

Olivia looked at him.

“Evelyn?””

He nodded.

“She said Catherine used to play the same song every afternoon. She said the house felt different when the music stopped.””

Olivia smiled faintly.

“Would you like to hear it?””

Daniel nodded.

She opened the music box and wound the tiny key.

The melody played.

Three notes.

Then four.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know that song.””

Olivia looked surprised.

“How?””

“My mother used to hum it when I couldn't sleep.””

He began humming the next notes.

Olivia stared at him.

It was the same melody.

Not a similar one.

The exact unfinished tune from the recording.

Daniel stopped.

“She never told me where she learned it.””

Olivia touched the music box.

“Maybe she learned it from our mother.””

They sat together in silence.

Then Daniel noticed something beneath the velvet lining.

A thin piece of paper had been folded into the wooden base.

He carefully removed it.

It was another handwritten note.

This one was dated the morning Catherine died.

Evelyn, if I cannot raise my children, promise me you will raise them together someday.

Daniel read it aloud.

Olivia covered her mouth.

At the bottom were two names.

Olivia Catherine Bennett.

Daniel Christopher Bennett.

Daniel sat down.

“My name…”

He stared at the paper.

“Christopher?””

Olivia smiled through her tears.

“Daniel Christopher Bennett.””

He shook his head.

“That's not my name.””

“Not yet.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you saying you want me to change it?””

Olivia shook her head.

“No. I'm saying you get to choose.””

For the first time that morning, Daniel smiled.

Then Olivia asked something that had been bothering her.

“Did Evelyn ever tell you why she kept the secret?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“She said she was protecting me from a man who believed money mattered more than people.””

Olivia looked toward the doorway.

Richard stood there.

He had been listening.

“Daniel,” he said.

The boy turned.

Richard looked older than he had the night before.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.””

Daniel said nothing.

Richard continued.

“Your mother loved you. Catherine loved you. I…”

His voice broke.

“I didn't know how to fix what I'd done.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You could have started by telling the truth.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Olivia watched her father.

“Are you going to tell the police everything?””

Richard looked at her.

Then at Daniel.

“Yes.””

Daniel's expression didn't change.

“Why now?””

Richard swallowed.

“Because I'm tired of lying.””

Olivia looked at him.

“That's not enough.””

“I know.””

She moved closer to Daniel.

“We need time.””

Richard nodded.

“Of course.””

He turned to leave.

But just before reaching the door, he stopped.

“There is something else you should know.””

Olivia looked up.

“What?””

Richard turned back.

“The trust documents Daniel brought last night were not the only papers Catherine signed.””

He walked toward the piano and placed a thin envelope on it.

“She left another legal instruction.””

Daniel picked it up.

“What does it say?””

Richard looked at both children.

“It says that if I ever concealed the truth about her death, the entire Bennett estate would pass to her children immediately.””

Olivia stared.

“All of it?””

Richard nodded.

“The company. The properties. The investments.””

Daniel looked down at the envelope.

“Then why are you telling us?””

Richard's eyes filled.

“Because I no longer have the right to keep it.””

Olivia slowly opened the envelope.

But the document inside contained something unexpected.

Catherine had appointed an independent trustee.

Someone neither child recognized.

At the bottom was a name.

*Evelyn Carter.*

Daniel looked up.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“She was supposed to manage everything until both children turned eighteen.””

Olivia frowned.

“But she's dead.””

Daniel stared at the document.

Then he noticed a handwritten line beneath the trustee's name.

In the event of Evelyn Carter's death, her designated successor shall assume responsibility.

The successor's name was hidden beneath a folded corner.

Daniel carefully unfolded it.

His expression changed.

Olivia leaned closer.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Thomas.

It was Mrs. Harris.

The elderly housekeeper stood frozen in the doorway.

Olivia looked at her.

“You?””

Mrs. Harris lowered her eyes.

“I promised your mother.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew all along?””

Mrs. Harris began crying.

“I knew Catherine had made arrangements. I didn't know what Richard had done to the documents.””

Olivia looked at the paper again.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

Mrs. Harris stepped forward.

“Because your mother made me promise to wait until both children were old enough to understand what they were being given.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm twelve.””

Mrs. Harris smiled sadly.

“And so is the truth, sometimes. It takes time to grow.””

Then she placed another envelope on the piano.

“This one was delivered to me yesterday.””

Olivia opened it.

Inside was a letter from an attorney.

The first sentence made her stomach drop.

We regret to inform you that the Bennett estate has been placed under emergency review following evidence of financial misconduct.

The second sentence was worse.

All assets will be frozen pending a hearing scheduled for tomorrow morning.

May you like

And the final line changed everything.

The petition was filed by Richard Bennett himself.
