Chapter 9: The Hearing That Could Take Everything Away

At 8:15 the following morning, Olivia sat in a private conference room at the courthouse.

Her lavender sweater had been replaced by a simple navy-blue dress. Her hair was neatly braided, and the silver bracelet from the music box rested on her wrist.

Daniel sat beside her.

He had been given a clean shirt, dark trousers, and proper shoes.

But he still looked uncomfortable.

He kept rubbing his thumb over the edge of his sleeve.

“You okay?”” Olivia whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“You?””

She shook her head.

“Not really.””

He gave her a small smile.

“Me neither.””

Across the room, Richard was speaking with his attorney.

His dark green suit had been replaced by a charcoal one. He looked tired, but his posture remained rigid.

Mrs. Harris sat behind the children.

Thomas had arrived twenty minutes earlier.

Detective Reeves stood near the entrance with a thick folder.

The hearing concerned the temporary control of the Bennett estate.

But everyone in that room knew the real issue.

Eleven years of secrets were finally being examined by people who could not be intimidated by Richard's money.

The courtroom doors opened.

A clerk called the case.

Everyone stood as Judge Eleanor Whitmore entered.

She was a woman in her late sixties, with silver-framed glasses and a calm, measured voice.

“Please be seated.””

The judge reviewed the documents.

“Mr. Bennett, I understand you have voluntarily requested an emergency review of the estate.””

Richard's attorney stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

“And you are asking the court to freeze all assets until the allegations can be investigated?””

“Correct.””

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Why?””

Richard's attorney hesitated.

“Because my client believes the estate may have been improperly administered.””

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She frowned.

That wasn't what Richard had told them.

The judge continued.

“Improperly administered by whom?””

Richard's attorney glanced at him.

“By several parties, including the former trustee and individuals who may have accessed confidential records.””

Mrs. Harris straightened.

Olivia's stomach tightened.

Richard had filed the petition himself.

But he was now attempting to make it appear that the people protecting Catherine's estate were responsible for the missing money.

The judge turned toward Richard.

“Mr. Bennett, do you agree with your attorney's statement?””

Richard stood.

“I do.””

Olivia stared at him.

Her father looked directly ahead.

Not once did he look toward her.

The judge nodded.

“Very well. We will hear the evidence.””

Reeves was called first.

He took the witness stand and identified the original hospital report, the financial transfers, and the altered investigation records.

The prosecutor asked him to explain the discrepancy between the original and amended reports.

Reeves opened the folder.

“The original report recorded Mrs. Bennett identifying the driver responsible for the collision. The amended report removed that identification and classified the event as an unverified hit-and-run.””

“Who requested the amendment?””

Reeves looked toward Richard.

“Mr. Richard Bennett.””

Richard's attorney stood.

“Objection. The witness is making an assumption.””

The judge looked at the prosecutor.

“Do you have supporting documentation?””

“Yes, Your Honor.””

A signed authorization was displayed.

Richard's signature appeared at the bottom.

The judge examined it.

“Objection overruled.””

Olivia lowered her eyes.

She had hoped her father would tell the truth.

Instead, he was trying to redirect the blame.

Next came the financial records.

The prosecutor showed the court transfers from Catherine's trust into Bennett Holdings.

Then payments to the medical consultant.

Then a series of transactions routed through an offshore account.

The judge looked at Richard.

“Mr. Bennett, were these funds authorized by the trust's original terms?””

Richard's attorney stood.

“My client believed he had authority to manage the estate.””

“That wasn't my question.””

The lawyer hesitated.

“No, Your Honor. Not under the terms currently before the court.””

The judge made a note.

Then the prosecutor called Mrs. Harris.

She approached the witness stand slowly.

Her hands trembled as she took the oath.

“Mrs. Harris,” the prosecutor began, “did Catherine Bennett leave any instructions concerning her children?””

“Yes.””

“What were those instructions?””

Mrs. Harris looked toward Olivia and Daniel.

“She wanted both children to have a future that didn't depend on their father's decisions.””

The prosecutor handed her a letter.

“Do you recognize this?””

“Yes. It's Catherine's handwriting.””

Mrs. Harris read the relevant paragraph aloud.

“She wanted Evelyn Carter to manage the estate until the children reached adulthood. If Evelyn couldn't, I was to become the successor.””

The judge looked at Richard.

“Were you aware of this arrangement?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you inform the court or the children?””

“No.””

The judge removed her glasses.

“Why not?””

Richard's voice was quiet.

“I thought it would create instability.””

Mrs. Harris turned toward him.

“Instability?””

Richard looked away.

The prosecutor asked another question.

“Mrs. Harris, did you ever see Mr. Bennett remove documents or financial records from the music room?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three days after Catherine died.””

Richard's attorney stood.

“Objection. The witness is describing an event from eleven years ago without independent verification.””

The judge considered it.

“Proceed, but establish the basis for her recollection.””

Mrs. Harris nodded.

“I remember because Catherine had asked me to keep the music room untouched. Richard came in before sunrise. He removed the blue music box and several folders. When I asked where they were going, he told me I had no right to question him.””

The prosecutor showed her a photograph.

“Is this the music box?””

Mrs. Harris nodded.

“Yes.””

“And did you later see it again?””

She looked toward Daniel.

“Yes. In his hands.””

The prosecutor then called Thomas.

Thomas testified about the night of the accident.

He explained how Richard had asked him to follow Catherine, how he had witnessed the argument, and how he had been instructed to remain silent afterward.

Richard's attorney challenged his credibility.

“Mr. Bennett, isn't it true that you disappeared for six years?””

“Yes.””

“And you are now returning with allegations against your brother?””

“Yes.””

“Could it be that you're attempting to gain a financial advantage?””

Thomas looked directly at him.

“I haven't asked for a dollar.””

“But you stand to benefit if your brother loses control of the estate.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't own any part of it.””

The attorney leaned forward.

“Then why come back?””

Thomas glanced toward Olivia.

“Because a little girl spent eleven years believing her mother died without saying goodbye. And because I spent six years pretending I had nothing to do with it.””

The courtroom fell silent.

The judge allowed the answer to stand.

Then Daniel was called.

Olivia immediately looked at him.

“You don't have to say anything you're not ready to say.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

He walked to the witness stand.

The prosecutor asked about his mother, Evelyn.

Daniel explained how she had kept the photograph, the letters, the silver key, and the documents.

He described the years of living in small apartments, his mother's long workdays, and the way she had saved every piece of evidence.

“Did your mother ever tell you that Catherine Bennett was your biological mother?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. She told me Catherine was a woman she loved and that I should find her daughter when I was old enough.””

“Why did you come to the gala?””

“Because my mother died before she could finish what she promised.””

The prosecutor paused.

“What did you hope to accomplish?””

Daniel looked toward Olivia.

“I wanted her to know her mother loved her.””

The prosecutor nodded.

“No further questions.””

Richard's attorney approached.

“Daniel, did you know you might inherit money from the Bennett estate?””

Daniel looked confused.

“No.””

“Did you know the mansion and company could become yours?””

“No.””

“Would you like them to?””

Daniel considered the question.

Then he answered.

“I wanted a pair of shoes. I didn't come here for a mansion.””

A few people in the courtroom lowered their heads.

The attorney tried again.

“Would you accept money if it were offered?””

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“I'd accept what my mother wanted me to have. But I can't buy another mother with it.””

The attorney stepped back.

The judge looked at Daniel for a long moment.

Then she called a recess.

During the break, Richard approached Olivia.

“Sweetheart.””

She didn't look up.

“Can we talk?””

Daniel moved slightly closer.

Olivia nodded.

Richard crouched beside her.

“I know I haven't handled things properly.””

Olivia looked at him.

“You lied about Mommy.””

“I know.””

“You lied about Uncle Thomas.””

“I know.””

“You lied about Daniel.””

Richard swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Then why should I believe you now?””

He had no answer.

He looked at Daniel.

“I want to make this right.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You can't make eleven years disappear.””

Richard's eyes filled.

“I know.””

Olivia looked toward the courtroom doors.

“Did you file the petition to freeze the estate because you wanted to protect us?””

Richard nodded.

“Partly.””

“What's the other reason?””

He looked down.

Then he whispered:

“Because I was afraid the court would discover where the rest of the money went.””

Olivia stared at him.

“How much is missing?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel stood.

“Tell them.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Thirty-two million dollars.””

Olivia's face went pale.

“Where is it?””

Richard looked toward his attorney.

Then he spoke.

“I transferred it to a private account.””

The silence between them was devastating.

“You stole thirty-two million dollars from Mommy's trust?”” Olivia whispered.

Richard shook his head.

“I borrowed it.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“For eleven years?””

Richard looked at him.

“I intended to return it.””

“From where?””

Richard's face crumpled.

“I don't know.””

The courtroom doors opened.

The clerk announced that the hearing would resume.

Richard stood.

Before returning to his seat, he leaned toward Olivia.

“Please don't let them destroy me.””

Olivia looked up at him.

“Daddy, you did that yourself.””

The hearing resumed.

The judge reviewed the documents one final time.

She announced that the estate would remain frozen until an independent financial audit was completed.

She also ordered a formal investigation into the altered hospital report and the unauthorized transfers.

Richard's authority over the estate was suspended.

Mrs. Harris was appointed temporary guardian of the trust, subject to court supervision.

Olivia and Daniel would have independent legal representation.

Richard lowered his head.

The judge looked toward the children.

“Miss Bennett. Daniel. You both deserve to have your interests protected while this matter is resolved.””

Olivia nodded.

Daniel stared at the table.

The judge then turned toward Richard.

“Mr. Bennett, I strongly advise you to cooperate fully with the investigation.””

Richard stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

But as everyone began gathering their papers, a court officer approached the bench with another sealed envelope.

“Your Honor, this was delivered moments ago. It concerns the Bennett estate.””

The judge opened it.

Her expression changed.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Finally, she looked directly at Richard.

“Mr. Bennett, I need you to remain in the courtroom.””

Richard froze.

“What is it?””

The judge placed the document on the bench.

“An independent financial audit has identified an additional account.””

Daniel looked up.

Olivia gripped his hand.

The judge continued.

“The account contains the remaining funds from Catherine Bennett's original trust.””

Richard's face drained of color.

“How much?””

The judge looked at him.

“Forty-eight million dollars.””

Thomas stood.

“But you said thirty-two million was missing.””

The judge turned another page.

“The account was opened eleven years ago under a different name.””

Olivia stared at the document.

“What name?””

The judge looked toward Daniel.

Then toward Richard.

And finally announced:

“Evelyn Carter.””

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

“My mother?””

The judge nodded.

“But there is something else.””

She held up the final page.

“According to the bank's records, the account received a transaction yesterday morning.””

Olivia looked at Daniel.

“Who transferred it?””

The judge read the name.

“Daniel Christopher Bennett.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't.””

Richard slowly turned toward him.

And for the first time since the boy had entered the ballroom, he looked genuinely terrified of Daniel.

May you like

Because someone had used the dead woman's account to move forty-eight million dollars.

And the transaction had been made in Daniel's name.
