Chapter 7: The Name on the Original Report

Olivia read the message three times.

Her fingers had gone cold.

Don't let your father open the front door.

She looked toward Richard.

He was staring at his ringing phone, his thumb hovering above the screen.

“Daddy,” Olivia whispered.

“Don't answer it.””

Richard looked at her.

“Give me your phone.””

She pulled it against her chest.

“No.””

“Olivia, this is a dangerous situation. You need to let me handle it.””

“That's what you've been saying my entire life.””

The sentence stopped him.

Across the kitchen, Daniel approached the window. The man in the dark suit was standing beside the black sedan, speaking into his phone.

He looked calm.

Almost too calm.

“That's Detective Reeves?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas nodded.

“He was a good detective once. I don't know what he's become.””

Daniel turned.

“You said he helped Catherine.””

“He did. But he also knew things he shouldn't have known.””

Richard finally answered his phone.

“Reeves.””

A man's voice came through.

“Good morning, Richard. We need to talk.””

“Not here.””

“Unfortunately, that's where the conversation needs to happen.””

Richard looked toward Olivia.

“I'm busy.””

The man outside smiled faintly.

“I can see that. I'm looking right at you.””

Richard immediately ended the call.

Olivia's phone buzzed again.

Your mother was conscious when the ambulance arrived. The hospital report was changed after she died.

Olivia looked at Thomas.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas slowly sat down.

“It means Catherine may have been able to tell the paramedics who was responsible.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Who changed the report?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Richard moved toward the hallway.

“I'm calling security.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Don't.””

“Sweetheart, please.””

“Why are you so afraid of this man?””

Richard stopped.

Then he said something that made Daniel look up.

“Because I know what he did.””

The kitchen fell silent.

Thomas stood.

“Richard.””

But Richard was already speaking.

“Reeves wasn't just investigating the accident. He was involved in it.””

Olivia's face drained of color.

“What?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“Your mother had evidence that someone inside the company was stealing from the trust. She had been working with Reeves to expose it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That's not what happened.””

Richard continued.

“Reeves was supposed to collect the documents. Instead, he started demanding money.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“So you paid him?””

Richard looked at him.

“I paid him to leave us alone.””

Olivia stared at her father.

“You paid a police officer?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I was trying to keep the situation from destroying everything.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“That's always your excuse.””

Before Richard could respond, the front doorbell rang.

Three times.

Then someone knocked.

A man's voice echoed through the entrance.

“Richard Bennett! Open the door!””

Richard turned toward the hallway.

Thomas stepped in front of him.

“Let me answer it.””

“No.””

“Richard, if he has the original report, we need to hear what he knows.””

Richard's expression became desperate.

“You don't understand what you're doing.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I've spent six years understanding exactly what you did.””

He walked toward the entrance.

Olivia followed as far as the hallway allowed, with Daniel beside her.

Mrs. Harris opened the door.

Detective Michael Reeves stood outside.

He was in his early sixties now, with thinning gray hair and a heavy leather briefcase. His dark suit was perfectly pressed, but his eyes moved rapidly around the entrance.

“Thomas,” he said.

“Michael.””

Reeves glanced toward Richard.

“Richard. It's been a long time.””

Richard didn't return the greeting.

“What do you want?””

Reeves placed his briefcase on a small table.

“I'm here to deliver something.””

He looked at Olivia.

“You must be Catherine's daughter.””

Olivia nodded.

“Did you know my mother?””

Reeves gave a brief, uncomfortable smile.

“I did.””

“Did you help change her hospital report?””

His expression tightened.

“Who told you that?””

Olivia held up her phone.

“Someone who seems to know more than my father.””

Reeves glanced at Richard.

Then he opened the briefcase.

Inside were several folders, a digital recorder, and a sealed hospital envelope.

“I was assigned to your mother's accident eleven years ago,” he explained.

“At the time, I was told the collision involved a hit-and-run driver. But the evidence I collected suggested something different.””

Thomas folded his arms.

“What did you find?””

Reeves removed a photograph.

It showed the intersection where Catherine's car had been struck.

“There were two sets of tire marks. One belonged to the vehicle that hit her. The other belonged to a vehicle that stopped nearby.””

Thomas pointed at the photograph.

“My SUV.””

Reeves nodded.

“Yes. Your SUV.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Get to the point.””

Reeves placed another document on the table.

“The original hospital report recorded Catherine's final statement.””

Olivia's breathing became shallow.

“What did she say?””

Reeves looked at her.

“She identified the driver who hit her.””

“Who?””

He opened the envelope.

A name was written on the final page.

Olivia read it.

Then she looked at Richard.

Her father had gone completely pale.

“That's impossible,” he whispered.

Thomas leaned over the document.

“No.””

Reeves nodded slowly.

“I'm afraid it isn't.””

The name belonged to *Daniel's father*.

Daniel stared at the page.

“My father?””

Reeves turned toward him.

“Your mother never told you?””

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother raised me alone. She said my father left before I was born.””

Richard lowered himself into a chair.

Thomas looked at Reeves.

“Are you certain?””

Reeves nodded.

“Catherine was conscious when the paramedics arrived. She told them that the driver had approached her car, spoken to her, and then fled.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“Why would my father do that?””

Reeves opened another folder.

“Because he was working for Bennett Holdings.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard didn't deny it.

Reeves continued.

“Your father was a financial courier. He transported confidential documents and cash between company offices. On the night of the accident, Catherine had discovered that he was moving money from her trust into an offshore account.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“My father stole from her?””

“He was being paid to help move the money,” Reeves replied.

“Catherine confronted him that night. He followed her after she left the mansion.””

Olivia looked toward Daniel.

“Then why did he hit her?””

Reeves hesitated.

“Catherine had a folder containing proof of the transfers. Your father wanted it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father wouldn't…”

His voice faded.

Reeves placed a final photograph on the table.

It showed a younger man standing beside a damaged black sedan.

Daniel recognized the face immediately.

He had seen it only once, in a photograph his mother kept hidden inside a drawer.

His father.

Reeves spoke quietly.

“He was arrested under another name two years after the accident. He died in prison last winter.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

Then he whispered:

“My mother knew?””

Thomas looked at him sadly.

“She suspected. But she never had enough evidence.””

Daniel turned away.

Olivia reached for his hand.

This time, he accepted it.

Reeves closed the folder.

“There's another problem.””

Richard looked up.

“What now?””

“The original report identifies the driver. But the altered report was signed by someone with access to the hospital records.””

“Who?”” Thomas asked.

Reeves turned the final page.

Then he looked directly at Richard.

“You authorized the change.””

Richard's face hardened.

“I did not.””

Reeves removed a document bearing Richard's signature.

“You approved the settlement and requested that the accident be classified as an unverified hit-and-run.””

Richard stood.

“That's not proof that I altered anything.””

“No,” Reeves replied.

“But the payment records might be.””

He removed a second folder.

Inside were bank statements.

One showed a transfer of $250,000 to a company registered under the name of a private medical consultant.

The date was three days after Catherine died.

Olivia stared at her father.

“You paid someone to change the report?””

Richard's eyes filled.

“I paid for your mother's medical treatment.””

“She was already dead.””

Richard said nothing.

Reeves looked toward the front door.

“I haven't come here to arrest anyone. I've come because the original evidence has been recovered, and the authorities are reopening the case.””

Richard laughed weakly.

“You think you can destroy me with eleven-year-old paperwork?””

Reeves closed his briefcase.

“No, Richard. You destroyed yourself eleven years ago.””

He turned toward Olivia.

“There's something else your mother wanted you to have.””

He removed a small photograph.

It showed Catherine standing beside a hospital bed.

In the bed was a newborn baby.

Olivia stared.

“Who's that?””

Reeves looked at her.

“Your mother asked me to protect that child.””

Daniel slowly raised his head.

“What child?””

Reeves placed the photograph in Olivia's hands.

Then he spoke the words that shattered the room.

“Your mother gave birth to a second child shortly before the accident.””

Olivia stared at him.

“I have a brother?””

Reeves nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard suddenly grabbed the table.

“Michael, don't.””

Olivia looked at her father.

“Where is he?””

Reeves hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Your brother has been living under a different name for eleven years.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

The baby wore a small silver bracelet.

On it were two engraved initials.

*D.C.*

Daniel looked down at his own wrist.

He was wearing the same bracelet.

His mother had given it to him on his tenth birthday.

The room seemed to tilt.

“That's…” Daniel whispered.

Reeves looked at him.

“Daniel, I believe you've been searching for the wrong family.””

May you like

And suddenly the barefoot boy who had entered the ballroom looking for Olivia's inheritance was no longer just the son of Evelyn Carter.

He might have been Catherine Bennett's son, too.
