Chapter 7 - The Secret My Father BuriedThe door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Whoever stood outside wasn’t trying to break in.

They weren’t rushing.

They wanted us to know they were there.

My father grabbed my arm tighter.

“Daniel.”

I looked at him.

For the first time in my life, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not worry.

Not concern.

Fear.

“What did you do?” I whispered.

His expression changed.

The question hurt him.

But he didn’t deny it.

“I made mistakes.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

I looked around the room.

At Vanessa.

At Marcus.

At my father.

“My whole life is falling apart, and everyone keeps calling it a mistake.”

The person outside knocked again.

Three slow knocks.

Ethan cried out upstairs.

“Daddy!”

I turned toward the stairs.

Nothing else mattered.

Not secrets.

Not lies.

Not revenge.

My son needed me.

I pulled away from my father.

“I’m going to him.”

“Daniel, wait.”

“No.”

My voice was firm.

“I spent two and a half years being told I wasn’t there.”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“I’m not making that mistake again.”

I ran upstairs.

“Ethan!”

I found him standing in the hallway, frozen.

Maria was beside him, holding his shoulders.

The moment he saw me, he ran.

I caught him.

His arms wrapped around my waist.

“Daddy, who is outside?”

I held him tightly.

“I don’t know.”

“Are we in trouble?”

I looked over his head.

At the hallway.

At the bedroom.

At the life I had returned to.

“No.”

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“You’re safe.”

He pulled back.

“But you look scared.”

That sentence almost broke me.

Because he was right.

Children always knew.

They knew when adults lied.

They knew when smiles were fake.

I placed my hands on his shoulders.

“I’m scared because I love you.”

His eyes widened slightly.

“That’s why?”

“Yes.”

I brushed his hair away from his forehead.

“Sometimes when you love someone, you’re afraid something might happen to them.”

He nodded slowly.

Then whispered:

“Like when you were gone?”

The words hurt.

But this time, I didn’t look away.

“Yes.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you left because of me.”

I closed my eyes.

“No, Ethan.”

My voice shook.

“Never because of you.”

The front door downstairs slammed.

Everyone froze.

I turned.

“Stay here.”

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Don’t go.”

I looked at him.

The same fear.

The same fear he had when he thought I would disappear.

I crouched.

“I’m coming back.”

“Promise?”

I nodded.

“I promise.”

I waited until he let go.

Then I walked downstairs.

The front door was open.

My father stood near the entrance.

Vanessa and Marcus were behind him.

But nobody was outside.

Only darkness.

The street was empty.

I looked around.

“What happened?”

My father didn’t answer.

He was staring at the ground.

I followed his gaze.

A small envelope sat on the doorstep.

My stomach tightened.

“No.”

Vanessa whispered.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

I picked it up.

The paper felt cold.

My name was written on the front.

Again.

The same handwriting.

Mine.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

I turned it over.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture of Ethan.

Taken from outside the house.

Today.

While he was near the pool.

On the back, there was one sentence.

We know what your father told you.

I looked up.

My father’s face had gone pale.

“They’re watching us.”

I turned to him.

“Who are they?”

He was silent.

“Dad.”

His eyes met mine.

“The people who funded your research.”

I stared.

“You said they were a foundation.”

“They are.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

He took a breath.

“They are a foundation on paper.”

The anger returned.

“So what are they really?”

My father looked toward Ethan’s room.

Then lowered his voice.

“A network.”

The word sounded ridiculous.

Like something from a movie.

But nobody was laughing.

“What kind of network?”

“One that collects information.”

“About what?”

“People.”

I stared at him.

“You sent me into that?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“I thought I was sending you somewhere safe.”

“But you weren’t.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“I was wrong.”

I almost couldn’t believe it.

My father.

The man who always seemed certain.

The man who taught me confidence.

Was standing in front of me admitting he had failed.

“What did they want from me?”

He hesitated.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“They wanted access.”

I turned.

“To what?”

She looked at me.

“Your research.”

I frowned.

“My research?”

“Yes.”

“The project was medical.”

“Partly.”

I looked at my father.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

He stayed silent.

That silence was becoming the answer to every question.

I stepped closer.

“No more secrets.”

My father looked at me.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

I pointed upstairs.

“My son spent years believing his father didn’t love him because everyone around him kept secrets.”

My voice cracked.

“I’m done.”

A long silence followed.

Then my father nodded.

“You deserve the truth.”

He sat down slowly.

“The research you were working on wasn’t just about medicine.”

“What was it?”

“A prediction system.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“A system that could analyze human behavior.”

I stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“That’s why they wanted it.”

My mind raced.

The project.

The endless tests.

The unusual questions.

The data collection.

I had always thought some parts of the research were strange.

But I trusted the organization.

I trusted the people funding it.

Because they were connected to respected institutions.

“What does that have to do with Ethan?”

My father looked at him.

“Everything.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Your son was part of the reason they chose you.”

I felt anger rise.

“Explain that.”

My father looked devastated.

“Before you left, they knew about your family.”

“They knew about Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

“Because of his mother.”

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She went pale.

“What?”

I turned toward her.

“What does he mean?”

Vanessa looked away.

My father continued.

“Vanessa’s family has connections to the foundation.”

My body went cold.

I looked at her.

“No.”

She whispered:

“Daniel…”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Your family?”

Marcus suddenly looked angry.

“Don’t drag us into this.”

I turned toward him.

“You knew too.”

He said nothing.

That was enough.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You married me because of this?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I loved you.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I wanted to believe it.

Part of me did.

But another part remembered my son in the pool.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

Vanessa looked broken.

“I did love you.”

“Then why destroy me?”

She covered her face.

“I thought I was saving you.”

“By lying?”

“By keeping you away.”

“From what?”

Her eyes lifted.

“From them.”

The room went silent.

Then she said:

“When you went overseas, I found out they were watching you.”

I looked at my father.

“And you knew?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“You both knew.”

Silence.

“You both let me leave.”

My father looked away.

“I thought distance would keep you safe.”

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Instead, my son thought I abandoned him.”

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer.

Then Ethan’s voice came from upstairs.

“Daddy?”

Everyone froze.

I looked up.

He was standing at the top of the stairs.

I immediately walked toward him.

“Ethan, I told you to stay upstairs.”

He looked past me.

At my father.

Then at Vanessa.

“I heard everything.”

My heart sank.

“Buddy…”

He looked at me.

“Is Grandpa a bad person?”

The question destroyed me.

Because a child should never have to ask that.

I walked to him.

“No.”

“Then why did he lie?”

I had no answer.

I hugged him.

“I don’t know.”

He whispered:

“Everyone lies.”

I closed my eyes.

Because he was right.

Everyone had.

Then a sound came from outside.

A car engine.

We all turned.

A black SUV slowly stopped in front of the house.

The same one from before.

This time, the doors opened.

My father went completely still.

“Oh no.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He stared through the window.

Then whispered:

“They brought someone.”

“Who?”

His face lost all color.

“The only person who knows every secret.”

The front door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She walked toward the house slowly.

Confidently.

Like she owned the place.

Then my father whispered the name.

A name that made Vanessa collapse into a chair.

“Evelyn.”

I looked at him.

“Who is Evelyn?”

My father stared at the woman approaching our door.

May you like

Then answered:

“Your mother.”
