Chapter 9 - The Brother Hidden From MeThe man standing in the doorway looked like a stranger.

But he carried pieces of my family.

My father’s eyes.

My mother’s expression.

The same slight tilt of the head I had seen in old photographs.

For years, I thought I knew my family.

I thought I knew the people who shaped me.

My father.

My mother.

My childhood.

My memories.

Now every piece of my past felt like a puzzle someone else had arranged.

“Who are you?”

My voice sounded quieter than I expected.

The man stared at me.

Then glanced around the room.

At my father.

At my mother.

At Vanessa.

Nobody looked surprised.

Nobody except me.

Again.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“I’m Adrian.”

The name meant nothing.

But the way my mother reacted meant everything.

She covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“You remember.”

The pain in his voice was obvious.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

My father moved forward.

“Adrian, listen—”

“No.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to explain.”

My father stopped.

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.”

Nobody answered.

I stepped forward.

“Now.”

Adrian looked at me.

“You really don’t know anything, do you?”

I almost laughed.

“That seems to be the theme of my entire life.”

His face softened slightly.

Then he looked away.

“I was born before you.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?”

My mother closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“I’m your older brother.”

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

“No.”

The answer came automatically.

“No.”

He nodded.

“I expected that.”

“My mother only had one child.”

His expression changed.

“She had two.”

I looked at my mother.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew.”

She whispered:

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

“How many secrets did you all keep?”

Nobody answered.

My voice rose.

“How many?”

My mother started crying.

“Daniel…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t want another explanation about protecting me.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Good.”

I turned toward him.

“What?”

“Because they used that excuse for years.”

His eyes moved to my parents.

“They said they were protecting us.”

The room went quiet.

“Protecting us from what?”

Adrian laughed softly.

“From the truth.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

He looked at my father.

“You tell him.”

My father looked exhausted.

“I thought you were dead.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I was supposed to be.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

My mother sat down.

“Adrian was involved with the foundation before you knew about it.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

He answered.

“Because they raised me.”

The words made no sense.

“What?”

Adrian walked farther into the room.

“When I was young, I was part of their program.”

My father looked away.

“They took him from us.”

I turned.

“You let that happen?”

My father’s face broke.

“No.”

“Then what?”

He swallowed.

“We thought we could get him back.”

“But you couldn’t.”

Silence.

Adrian nodded.

“They changed me.”

I studied him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I learned how they think.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“And I learned what they do to people who try to leave.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“I was the reason they found you.”

My body went still.

“What?”

Everyone looked at him.

Even my father.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian sighed.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you.”

“Then why?”

“Because they already know where you are.”

My father stepped forward.

“How?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Because someone inside the foundation gave them the location.”

Nobody spoke.

Slowly, everyone looked at Vanessa.

Her face changed.

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Not her.”

The room froze.

“Then who?”

He looked directly at me.

“Someone you trust.”

My heart sank.

I looked around.

At everyone.

My family.

My wife.

My father.

My mother.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had lied.

“Who?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the table.

He placed a small device on it.

“What is that?”

“Proof.”

“Of what?”

“Of what happened while you were overseas.”

I stared.

“What happened?”

Adrian pressed a button.

A recording started playing.

At first, there was static.

Then a voice.

My voice.

My heart stopped.

“Vanessa, I don’t know how much longer I can do this.”

I froze.

That was my voice.

But I had never said those words.

The recording continued.

“I’m tired. I’m tired of pretending I can be the husband and father everyone expects.”

My face went pale.

Ethan’s letters.

The fake email.

The fake documents.

They had all been built around this.

My voice.

My identity.

But the recording sounded real.

Vanessa whispered:

“They edited it.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I helped create the technology.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Then why expose it?”

His expression changed.

“Because I realized what they were doing.”

The recording continued.

Another voice appeared.

A man.

Unknown.

“You understand your role.”

My voice answered.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

The fake me.

The one they created.

The one my son believed.

Adrian turned it off.

“They used pieces of your real conversations.”

My father nodded slowly.

“That’s why it sounded authentic.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Of course you did.”

My father looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.”

I ignored him.

“Why now?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Because they’re coming.”

As if his words summoned them, headlights appeared outside.

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked toward the window.

“Too late.”

My mother stood.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“Take Daniel and Ethan.”

“What about you?”

He smiled sadly.

“I’m the reason they came.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at Vanessa.

At my parents.

At my brother.

At the people who had broken my life but were still my family.

“I’m done running.”

Adrian stared at me.

“You don’t know who you’re dealing with.”

“No.”

I looked toward the stairs.

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.”

I thought about Ethan underwater.

His hand reaching for me.

His voice calling my name.

I thought about every night he waited for me.

Every letter hidden away.

Every lie he believed.

“They already took two years from my son.”

My voice hardened.

“They don’t get another day.”

A loud knock interrupted us.

Everyone went silent.

Then a voice came through the door.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Daniel.”

I looked at my father.

His face had gone white.

“You know that voice?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who is it?”

My father whispered:

“The person who started all of this.”

The door shook.

Not from force.

From someone calmly opening it with a key.

Everyone froze.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

I stared.

Because I recognized her.

She was the director of the research foundation.

The woman who approved my overseas project.

The woman who shook my hand and told me my work would change the world.

She looked exactly the same.

Almost.

Then she said:

“I’m sorry it took so long.”

My blood ran cold.

“Why?”

Her smile disappeared.

“Because I needed to wait until you finally remembered.”

I frowned.

“Remembered what?”

She looked at my father.

Then at my mother.

Then at Adrian.

Finally, she looked at me.

“The truth.”

A pause.

“The research was never about predicting other people.”

She stepped closer.

“It was about predicting you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

She smiled.

“Because your family forgot to tell you something.”

The room went silent.

“You weren’t chosen for the project because you were brilliant.”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“You were chosen because you created it.”

I froze.

“No.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

And then she said the sentence that destroyed the last piece of my reality.

“You have spent two and a half years trying to find out why everyone lied to you.”

She smiled.

“But the biggest lie…”

May you like

She pointed at me.

“…was the one you told yourself.”
