Chapter 13: The Person Behind the Door
I stood in the middle of Warehouse 17 with the phone pressed against my ear.
For the first time in my life, I had no words.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I understood too much.
Every missing piece.
Every strange moment.
Every secret conversation.
They all led back to one question.
Who had been close enough to destroy my family?
Camille’s breathing came through the phone.
“Marcus?””
I finally spoke.
“Say it.””
A pause.
“Say what?””
“The name.””
She was silent.
That silence was the answer before the words came.
“Thomas.””
The warehouse went completely still.
I looked at the man standing across from me.
Thomas.
My former friend.
My accountant.
The person who had spent years telling me he was protecting my company.
Derrick looked at me.
He knew immediately.
“You understand now.””
I ignored him.
“Camille, are you sure?””
Her voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I found the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones your father hid.””
My heart pounded.
“The same documents everyone has been searching for?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Andre.
He looked devastated.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Camille’s voice softened.
“Because Thomas found out I had them.””
I closed my eyes.
“When?””
“Before Jada’s graduation.””
Everything stopped.
The day that changed everything.
The day I thought I failed my daughter.
The day I believed I had simply made the wrong choice.
But the truth was darker.
Someone had built that moment.
Someone had pushed every piece into place.
“Thomas knew about the documents,” Camille continued.
“He knew your father left evidence.””
“And?””
“He thought I had it.””
I looked at Thomas.
The anger inside me was almost impossible to control.
“He caused the accident.””
Camille didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I hung up.
Slowly.
Then I looked at Thomas.
“Was it worth it?””
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Acceptance.
Like he knew this day would come.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
I laughed.
“You cut my brakes.””
“No.””
“You watched my family fall apart.””
“No.””
“You made my daughter believe I abandoned her.””
His expression changed.
That one hit him.
“I didn’t want Jada hurt.””
“You don’t get to say her name.””
Thomas looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You made choices.””
Derrick moved beside me.
“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.””
Thomas looked at him.
“And you always thought you were the hero.””
The tension between them was immediate.
I looked between them.
“You both knew.””
Derrick shook his head.
“Not everything.””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“None of you knew everything.””
He reached into his coat.
Andre stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Thomas stopped.
For a moment, I thought he had a weapon.
Instead, he pulled out an old envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“This belonged to your father.””
I didn’t move.
“Why give it to me now?””
“Because I’m tired.””
The answer surprised me.
“Tired of what?””
“Running.””
He looked around the warehouse.
“At first, it was about money.””
He swallowed.
“Then it became about survival.””
I stared at him.
“You destroyed my life for survival?””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“I destroyed your life because I was afraid you would destroy mine.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Not from my father.
From my mother.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Thomas watched me.
“You want the truth?””
I looked up.
“Yes.””
“She wasn’t stealing from you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She was trying to protect you.””
The words made no sense.
“My mother?””
Thomas nodded.
“She discovered your grandfather’s plan.””
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“Your grandfather was the one controlling everything.””
I froze.
“He wasn’t broke.””
No one spoke.
“He was hiding money.””
“How?””
“Through your company.””
I looked at the documents.
“And my mother found out.””
“Yes.””
“She tried to stop him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did my father blame her?””
Thomas looked away.
“Because he never knew the whole truth.””
The warehouse fell silent.
My entire childhood.
My family.
Everything I believed.
Built on incomplete stories.
I opened my mother’s letter.
My hands shook.
Marcus,
I know you think I betrayed you.
I know one day you may hate me.
But everything I did was to protect you from the person who created this mess.
I read the next line.
And my heart stopped.
The person you call family is the person you should fear.
I looked up.
Thomas was watching me.
“Who?””
His face turned pale.
“Marcus…”
“Who?””
Before he could answer, the warehouse door slammed open.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a folder.
My breath stopped.
Because I knew her.
But she had been gone for years.
“Mom?””
Nobody moved.
The woman stared at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“I’m sorry it took so long.””
