Chapter 14: The Mother Who Came Back
I couldn’t move.
My mother stood ten feet away.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably her.
Every memory from my childhood came rushing back.
Her voice.
Her hands.
The way she used to hum while cooking.
The funeral.
The tears.
The goodbye.
All of it.
A lie?
“Mom?””
My voice barely worked.
She looked at me.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I should have told you.””
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let me bury you.””
Her face broke.
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
My voice rose.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I stepped back.
“Everyone says that.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Everyone claimed they were protecting me.
Everyone had taken away my right to choose.
My mother walked closer.
“I deserved your anger.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I do.””
That honesty surprised me.
She handed me the folder.
“Read this.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Everything.””
Andre stood silently beside me.
He looked like he had aged ten years in one day.
“You knew.””
My mother looked at him.
“I asked you not to tell him.””
Andre looked down.
“I was afraid.””
My mother nodded.
“I know.””
I turned to him.
“You were afraid of her?””
He didn’t answer.
That told me enough.
I looked at my mother.
“Explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Your grandfather built everything.””
“The company?””
“Yes.””
“He created it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why destroy it?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because he believed control mattered more than family.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were financial records.
Names.
Dates.
Transfers.
“He wanted the company to become his legacy.””
I looked at Thomas.
“And you?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“I helped him.””
My mother nodded.
“But you weren’t the only one.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Derrick.
He stiffened.
My mother continued:
“Your grandfather had people everywhere.””
I looked around.
The people I trusted.
The people who stayed.
The people who left.
Everyone connected.
“He used money to control people.””
My mother looked at me.
“Even me.””
I swallowed.
“How did you survive?””
“Your father helped me disappear.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“He found out your grandfather planned to destroy anyone who threatened him.””
She looked down.
“Your father knew he couldn’t fight him directly.””
“So he pretended you were dead.””
“Yes.””
“And I was left alone?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I watched you from a distance.””
That hurt.
More than anger.
“You watched?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
“Who?””
She looked at Thomas.
Then Derrick.
Then Andre.
Finally me.
“Someone inside your family.””
The warehouse went silent.
Again.
I was exhausted from being surprised.
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
“Your grandfather had one final person working for him.””
I waited.
She whispered:
“Your father.””
I froze.
“No.””
“I know it sounds impossible.””
“No.””
“He wasn’t evil.””
“Then why?””
“Because he was trapped.””
I shook my head.
“He knew everything.””
“Yes.””
“He hid everything.””
“Yes.””
“Then how was he protecting me?””
My mother stepped closer.
“Because your father made the hardest choice.””
“What choice?””
“He let everyone hate him.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He knew if the truth came out too early, your grandfather would destroy you.””
I looked at the letter.
The warnings.
The secrets.
The missing pieces.
My father wasn’t the hero.
He wasn’t the villain.
He was someone who made impossible choices.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Jada.
Dad, are you coming home?
I stared at those words.
After everything.
After all the secrets.
One person still needed me.
Not as a protector.
Not as someone with answers.
Just as her father.
I looked at my mother.
“I need to go.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Before I left, she grabbed my arm.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“The person who caused the accident…”
I waited.
She looked terrified.
“It wasn’t Thomas.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“It wasn’t your grandfather.””
“Then who?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The person who wanted you gone…”
May you like
She whispered:
“Was the person who knew you would never stop looking for the truth.””
