Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Was Afraid To Tell Me
Daniel’s name glowed on my phone screen.
For several seconds, I just stared at it.
A part of me wanted to throw the phone into the ocean.
That part remembered the woman in the launch.
The kiss.
The lie.
The overnight bag sitting on the dock like I was nothing more than an inconvenience he needed removed.
But another part of me remembered something else.
The look on his face when the crew took him away.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Real fear.
The kind a person cannot fake.
“Answer it,” Tyler said quietly.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because you need to hear what he says.””
Emma stepped closer.
“And you believe him?””
Tyler didn’t look at her.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“Then why?””
“Because sometimes the truth comes from people who deserve no forgiveness.””
The phone kept ringing.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then it stopped.
A missed call.
I exhaled.
“He’ll call again.””
Tyler looked toward the dark marina.
“He knows you saw the messages.””
“How?””
“Because Richard wants you scared.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“Richard.””
I said the name quietly.
It still felt impossible.
Like saying the name of a stranger who happened to share the face of someone I had known for twenty years.
Then my phone rang again.
This time I answered.
“Daniel.””
Silence.
I heard waves.
Wind.
Then his voice.
“Elaine.””
I closed my eyes.
I hated that hearing him still affected me.
After everything.
After today.
After all the evidence.
His voice still sounded familiar.
Still sounded like home.
“What do you want?””
A long pause.
“I need to know you’re safe.””
I almost laughed.
“Safe?””
“Yes.””
“You tried to get me off the island.””
“That wasn’t why.””
I looked at Tyler.
Then Emma.
Then the documents scattered across the old marina table.
“Explain.””
Daniel was quiet.
“Are you alone?””
I almost answered yes.
Then I stopped.
Because I remembered the first lesson I had learned today.
Everyone lies.
“No.””
Another pause.
“Who is with you?””
“Why?””
“Elaine, just answer me.””
His urgency made me angry.
“You don’t get to demand answers from me anymore.””
“I know.””
That response caught me off guard.
“I know I don’t.””
The anger in my chest shifted.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because Daniel never admitted when he was wrong.
Not once.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“The island.””
“Still?””
“Yes.””
“With Emma?””
Silence.
I heard him breathe.
Then:
“No.””
My eyes moved to Emma.
She looked away.
“Then where is she?””
“I don’t know.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“She left.””
“When?””
“After you sent us away.””
That sounded almost impossible.
Emma spoke quietly.
“He’s lying.””
Daniel heard her.
“Emma?””
The way he said her name made her freeze.
“You’re with her?””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“You knew she would find me.””
“No.””
“You knew about the documents.””
“No.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Daniel went silent.
The silence was longer this time.
Heavy.
Like he was deciding whether to lose me completely or finally tell me everything.
Finally, he said:
“I knew Richard was planning something.””
I felt my body go still.
“How long?””
“Months.””
“Months?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were trying to fix it by sleeping with another woman?””
Silence.
The silence hurt more than an excuse.
Because there was no defense.
No explanation.
Just guilt.
“I made mistakes.””
“You think?””
“I know what it looked like.””
“No, Daniel.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t.””
I looked at the ocean.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find out the person you trusted most was building a life without you.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
His voice changed.
Not defensive.
Broken.
“I watched Richard take everything from people before.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“He did this before.””
I looked at Tyler.
Tyler’s expression changed.
“You knew?”” I asked.
Daniel answered:
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
There it was.
The thing that had destroyed us.
Daniel’s greatest flaw.
He always believed he could carry everything alone.
Even when he was drowning.
Even when he dragged everyone else underwater with him.
“What did Richard do?””
Daniel sighed.
“Before he became our attorney, Richard worked with my father.””
I froze.
Your father.
Daniel rarely talked about him.
His father had died before I met him.
“He told me my father destroyed his family.””
I listened.
“He blamed my father for losing everything.””
“Did your father?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
That answer surprised me.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
The wind moved around me.
“Richard spent years believing my father ruined his life.””
“And now he wants revenge.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents.
The forged signatures.
The fake company.
The death certificate.
“But why me?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Because you were the thing I loved most.””
My eyes closed.
The words hurt.
Because they sounded like something the old Daniel would say.
Before everything.
Before lies.
Before Emma.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Make me remember who you used to be.””
His voice became quiet.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost dropped the phone.
Because Daniel Hayes did not apologize.
Not easily.
Not sincerely.
“Where are you right now?”” I asked.
“Near the north beach.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard sent someone.””
My heart stopped.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Elaine, listen carefully.””
I heard movement on his end.
“Get away from the marina.””
My eyes moved toward Tyler.
“What?””
“Get away from there now.””
“How do you know where I am?””
No answer.
“Daniel.””
“He’s been tracking you.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“The person you’re standing beside.””
Everyone went silent.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Tyler looked at me.
“What did he say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Daniel could be lying.
He could be manipulating me.
That was what he did best.
But then Tyler’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
And that scared me more than anything Daniel had said.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Tyler didn’t answer.
He turned the phone toward me.
The caller ID.
*Richard Cole.*
Nobody spoke.
Then Tyler answered.
“Hello?””
Richard’s voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Almost friendly.
“Tyler.””
The way he said his name made my skin crawl.
“You should not have gone there.””
Tyler’s jaw tightened.
“I know what you did.””
A small laugh came through the phone.
“No, you don’t.””
Richard sounded almost amused.
“You know what I wanted you to know.””
My stomach dropped.
Tyler looked at me.
Richard continued:
“Elaine is there, isn’t she?””
Nobody answered.
He already knew.
“I’m disappointed.””
Tyler stepped away.
“Richard—”
“Don’t pretend you’re the hero.””
The marina went silent.
“You know exactly why this started.””
Tyler’s face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
I noticed.
And I realized something.
There was history here.
A history nobody had told me.
Richard continued.
“Elaine deserves the truth.””
I stared at the phone.
“Then tell me.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Everyone froze.
Richard was quiet.
Then:
“Elaine.””
His voice softened.
“I was hoping you would say that.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me why my husband was trying to protect me.””
Another silence.
Then Richard said:
“Because Daniel knows what happened thirty-one years ago.””
My breath caught.
Thirty-one years.
The exact length of my marriage.
The beginning of everything.
“What happened?””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“Your husband never told you how your first resort was really funded.””
I looked at Tyler.
At Emma.
At the documents.
“Explain.””
Richard answered:
“Because if you knew the truth…”
A pause.
“You would have left him long before today.””
The line went dead.
I stood there, frozen.
Because for the first time, the betrayal wasn’t about an affair.
It wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t even about Daniel.
It was about a secret buried before our marriage.
A secret that had built our entire life.
And suddenly I understood something terrifying.
May you like
Maybe Daniel wasn’t trying to destroy my life.
Maybe he had been trying to protect the lie that created it.
