Chapter 8: The Trial Of A Man I Hated And Loved
The words followed me long after the call ended.
*The evidence proving Daniel Hayes tried to kill his wife.*
I stood in the old marina, staring at the phone in my hand.
My mind kept rejecting the sentence.
Not because I believed Daniel was innocent.
That would have been easier.
It would have been easier if the world was simple.
If there were good people and bad people.
If betrayal came with a clear face.
But Daniel had become the most confusing person in my life.
The man who broke my heart.
The man who lied to me.
The man who sent me away.
And possibly…
The man who had been trying to save me.
Tyler took the phone from my hand.
“Who called?””
I looked at him.
“Someone from the island.””
“What did they say?””
I swallowed.
“Daniel was arrested.””
Emma went pale.
“For what?””
I answered quietly.
“Trying to kill me.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Emma shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You believe him?””
She looked angry.
Not at me.
At the situation.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I believe Richard.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
Emma looked at the ground.
“Richard has been planning this longer than Daniel knew.””
Tyler nodded slowly.
“She’s right.””
I looked between them.
“Then why does everyone think Daniel did it?””
Tyler’s expression hardened.
“Because Richard needed a villain.””
“And Daniel volunteered.””
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Because that was the painful truth.
Daniel had spent months creating the perfect image of guilt.
A secret affair.
Suspicious meetings.
Hidden documents.
A woman everyone could point at.
He had made himself look exactly like the man who would do this.
“Why?”” Emma asked.
Tyler looked at me.
“Because Richard needed to believe Daniel was alone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“If Richard knew Daniel was trying to expose him, he would have moved faster.””
“So Daniel pretended to betray me.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“He still betrayed me.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew.
A reason was not an excuse.
A secret plan did not erase the damage.
I had spent thirty-one years believing my marriage was built on honesty.
And now I was standing in the ruins of it.
A few hours later, we arrived at the mainland police station.
I hated that place before I even entered.
Not because of what it represented.
Because I knew Daniel would be inside.
And I didn’t know what I would feel when I saw him.
Anger?
Pain?
Relief?
Maybe all three.
A detective met us at the entrance.
“Mrs. Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“I’m Detective Morgan.””
He looked at Tyler.
Then Emma.
“You brought witnesses.””
“I brought people who know the truth.””
He gave a tired smile.
“Everyone says that.””
We followed him inside.
The hallway smelled like coffee and old paper.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing like the life-changing moment I was walking into.
That was the strange thing about disasters.
They rarely arrived with music.
Sometimes they happened under fluorescent lights.
Behind closed doors.
On ordinary floors.
Detective Morgan opened a room.
Daniel sat inside.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His face looked exhausted.
For the first time in years, he looked older than me.
He looked up.
And when he saw me…
Everything changed.
Not because he was relieved.
Because he looked ashamed.
“Elaine.””
I stood there.
The man across from me was still my husband.
Even though I wasn’t sure what that meant anymore.
“Daniel.””
He looked at Tyler.
Then Emma.
His jaw tightened.
“Emma.””
She looked away.
“You used me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Emma stepped forward.
“You told me she was gone from your life.””
“I know.””
“You told me you were leaving.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled.
“And you were planning all of this.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
His voice became quieter.
“I was trying to stop it.””
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I expect Elaine to decide.””
That was the first thing he said that sounded like the man I knew.
Not controlling.
Not demanding.
Accepting.
Detective Morgan placed a file on the table.
“Mr. Hayes, we have evidence.””
Daniel looked at the file.
“I know.””
“You admit the insurance policy?””
“Yes.””
Emma looked shocked.
“What?””
Daniel didn’t look at her.
“I took out the policy.””
My heart sank.
Even knowing everything else…
Hearing him admit it still hurt.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Richard forced me into a position where I needed leverage.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“I should have told you.””
I looked away.
“Yes.””
“I thought I could protect you.””
“You thought lying to me was protecting me?””
“No.””
His voice broke slightly.
“I thought if you knew, you would try to fight.””
“I would have.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He looked down.
“Because I knew Richard would come after you first.””
The room went quiet.
Detective Morgan opened the file.
“We found several documents.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Documents showing you planned financial transfers.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And we found communication between you and Mr. Cole.””
“Yes.””
“So explain why we shouldn’t believe you planned this.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I didn’t.””
The detective leaned forward.
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
Then the door opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
“Detective?””
Morgan turned.
“What?””
The officer handed him a tablet.
His expression changed immediately.
“What is it?””
“We received a new video.””
“From who?””
The officer looked at me.
“Anonymous sender.””
My stomach dropped.
Morgan played the video.
The screen showed a room.
Daniel’s office.
Someone had been recording.
A man entered.
Richard.
He was holding documents.
He placed them on Daniel’s desk.
Then he spoke.
“I don’t enjoy doing this.””
I felt cold.
Because I knew that voice.
Richard continued.
“But after thirty years, I’m tired of waiting.””
The video showed Daniel entering.
Richard looked at him.
“You have two choices.””
Daniel’s voice came through.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard placed a folder down.
“You help me remove Elaine.””
Silence.
Daniel looked shocked.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“You still think you have a choice.””
The room became still.
Detective Morgan paused the video.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
“Continue.””
Morgan played it.
Richard leaned closer.
“You don’t understand, Daniel.””
His voice became colder.
“Your wife is the only thing standing between me and what should have always been mine.””
Daniel said something barely audible.
“What if I refuse?””
Richard smiled.
“Then I make sure everyone believes you did it alone.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
The evidence wasn’t perfect.
But it changed everything.
Because for the first time, Richard’s voice existed.
His plan.
His threat.
His motive.
Daniel looked at me.
“I tried to warn you.””
I stared at him.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You should have chosen me.””
The words came out quietly.
And somehow that hurt the most.
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.””
The detective looked at the screen.
“We need to find Richard Cole.””
Tyler suddenly stood.
“He won’t be hiding.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Why?””
Tyler’s face changed.
Because he realized something.
“Because he doesn’t think he has to.””
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
Everyone looked at me.
I opened it.
One sentence.
From Richard.
*You finally know the truth.*
Another message appeared.
*Now you’re ready to hear the rest.*
Then a photograph loaded.
I felt the blood leave my face.
It was a picture of my childhood home.
The house where I grew up.
The house my parents sold thirty-one years ago.
And standing in front of it…
was Richard.
Holding an old document.
A document with my father’s signature.
Tyler saw the photo.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Elaine…”
“What?””
He whispered:
“That’s not the beginning.””
I stared at the picture.
“Then what is it?””
Tyler’s voice was barely audible.
“That’s the reason Richard waited thirty-one years.””
I looked at Daniel.
At the man who had lied to me.
At the man who had tried to protect me.
And for the first time, I wondered if the greatest betrayal of my life…
was the one I already knew about.
Because Richard wasn’t trying to take Daniel’s resort.
He wasn’t trying to destroy my marriage.
May you like
He was trying to uncover something buried before I was ever part of the story.
Something my own parents had hidden from me.
