Chapter 3: The Name on the Phone

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the ringing phone.

Not the name flashing across the screen.

Not even the panic that crossed his face.

It was the fact that my husband, the man who always had an explanation ready for everything, suddenly had nothing to say.

The phone continued vibrating in his hand.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The screen lit up again.

*Richard Hale.*

Daniel’s boss.

I stared at the name.

Then I looked back at Daniel.

“Your boss knows?””

He swallowed.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like that. Not when you’re about to lie again.””

Lily stood beside me, holding my coat sleeve.

She was quiet.

Too quiet.

That scared me more than her crying.

Children who are hurt loudly still have somewhere to put their pain.

Children who go silent carry it alone.

Daniel looked at her, then lowered his voice.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

I almost laughed.

“Private?””

The word tasted bitter.

“You’ve spent eight months creating a private life behind my back.””

“Sarah, please.””

I looked at the phone still glowing in his hand.

“Answer it.””

His eyes widened.

“What?””

“Answer it.””

“Not now.””

“Why?””

Silence.

“Because he’ll hear me with you?””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I nodded slowly.

“You’re not worried about losing your job.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You’re worried about him knowing I found out.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then prove it.””

I pointed at the phone.

“Answer.””

For a moment, I thought he might.

I actually waited.

But Daniel pressed the side button and silenced the call.

The screen went black.

And something inside me finally accepted what my heart had been fighting all night.

He wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t trapped.

He was protecting himself.

Again.

Emily watched from a few feet away.

She looked exhausted.

Almost as exhausted as I felt.

“Richard knows about me too?”” she asked.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Emily…”

Her face tightened.

“That’s not an answer.””

He didn’t respond.

She laughed quietly.

“You told me nobody at work knew.””

“I said it wasn’t public.””

“Same thing.””

“No, it’s not.””

She stepped closer.

“Then explain it.””

Daniel looked around.

The airport entrance was still crowded.

People walked past us carrying luggage, laughing, talking, living normal lives.

Meanwhile, three adults and one child stood in the middle of it all, watching a family collapse.

Finally, Daniel said:

“Richard knew I was having personal issues.””

Emily stared at him.

“Personal issues?””

“Yes.””

“You mean your wife?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t tell him details.””

“But he knew?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Emily’s face went pale.

“Oh my God.””

I watched her process it.

Then she turned to me.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

I believed her.

That surprised me.

After everything.

After seeing her with my husband.

After knowing she was part of the reason my family was broken.

I still believed her.

Because Daniel had made both of us victims of the same lie.

“You really thought we were separated?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“He told me you hadn’t lived like a couple for months.””

I looked at Daniel.

“He told me you were staying together because of Lily.””

My daughter’s name made my stomach twist.

“She thought you were leaving.””

Emily’s eyes filled with anger.

“He said you knew about us.””

“I didn’t.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know now.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily, this isn’t helping.””

She turned on him.

“You don’t get to decide what helps anymore.””

The airport noise seemed to disappear again.

Because she said the exact thing I had been feeling.

Daniel didn’t get to control the story.

Not anymore.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

It was my sister, Rachel.

I hadn’t told her anything.

I hadn’t told anyone.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t.””

I looked up.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t call anyone yet.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His answer came too quickly.

“Because we need to handle this as a family.””

A family.

The word almost made me angry enough to scream.

“Family?””

I looked at Lily.

“Do you know what family means?””

Daniel’s face fell.

“Sarah—”

“No. You don’t get to use that word when it’s convenient.””

I answered the phone.

“Rachel?””

My sister’s voice immediately changed.

“Sarah? What happened? You sound strange.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

And I finally understood something.

Daniel wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing control.

“Rachel,” I said.

“Yes?””

I took a breath.

“My husband came home today.””

There was a pause.

“Okay…”

“He didn’t come alone.””

Silence.

Then:

“What?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sarah.””

I ignored him.

“He was with another woman.””

Rachel gasped.

“What?””

Lily looked down.

I lowered my voice.

“I’ll explain everything later. I just need you to know what happened.””

“Are you safe?””

The question almost broke me.

Because I realized I hadn’t asked myself that.

Was I safe?

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Financially.

After eight months of lies, I wasn’t sure what parts of my life were real anymore.

“I’m okay.””

It was the first lie I told that night.

Rachel knew.

She always knew.

“No, you’re not.””

My throat tightened.

“I’ll call you later.””

“Sarah—”

“I love you.””

I hung up before I cried.

Daniel stared at me.

“You shouldn’t have done that.””

I looked at him.

“You’re unbelievable.””

“You don’t understand what this could cause.””

“There it is again.””

“What?””

“Everything is about consequences for you.””

I stepped closer.

“What about consequences for Lily?””

He looked at her.

And for once, he had no answer.

A few minutes later, we were sitting in my car.

Lily was in the back seat.

Daniel stood outside the driver’s door.

He looked like he wanted to say something.

I rolled down the window slightly.

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“Please don’t contact anyone from my company.””

I stared at him.

“You’re still doing this?””

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

“This could destroy my career.””

I looked at him.

“Good.””

The word surprised even me.

Daniel flinched.

“You don’t mean that.””

“I mean I’m done protecting someone who never protected me.””

He looked desperate.

“Sarah, listen to me. There are things you don’t know.””

I almost smiled.

“You’re right.””

I started the engine.

“I don’t know a lot of things.””

His face tightened.

“But I’m going to.””

I put the car into reverse.

“Sarah.””

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because something in his voice made me look back.

He leaned closer to the window.

His eyes were filled with fear.

“Richard didn’t call because he knows about Emily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the airport doors.

Then back at me.

“He called because he knows what I did with the company money.””

The air left my lungs.

“What company money?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His voice dropped.

“Sarah…”

The fear in his eyes was different now.

Bigger.

“I didn’t just risk my marriage.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I risked everything.””

The phone in his hand rang again.

This time, he didn’t silence it.

He looked at the screen.

Then he looked at me.

And I saw the name.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been inside our home.

May you like

The person calling Daniel was the last person I expected.

*My father.*
