Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Lies
I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
Emily’s words stayed in the air between us.
*The person who destroyed your marriage is the person your father has been protecting all along.*
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
That was the answer.
Not a confession.
Not an explanation.
Just the simple act of avoiding my eyes.
“Sarah?””
Emily’s voice pulled me back.
“Are you still there?””
“Yes.””
My voice sounded distant.
“Tell me who.””
A long pause.
Then Emily whispered:
“Richard Hale.””
My breath caught.
Daniel’s boss.
The man whose name had appeared on his phone.
The man who had been investigating the money.
The man my father had supposedly made a deal with.
“No.””
Emily spoke quickly.
“Yes.””
“You’re saying Daniel’s boss planned all of this?””
“I’m saying he controlled more than Daniel ever told you.””
I looked at my father.
“Why?””
Emily hesitated.
“Because Daniel found out what Richard was doing.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was he doing?””
“He was using company accounts to hide money.””
I looked at the laptop.
The recording.
The documents.
The missing pieces suddenly started moving.
“Daniel knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he take money?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“Because Richard forced him into a corner.””
I closed my eyes.
I hated that a part of me wanted to believe her.
Because believing her meant Daniel wasn’t the monster I thought he was.
But it also meant the man I loved had still made choices.
Bad ones.
Terrible ones.
“Emily.””
“Yes?””
“Why are you telling me this?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I finally realized Daniel lied to me too.””
I leaned against the desk.
“Explain.””
“He told me he was leaving you because your marriage was already dead.””
I didn’t respond.
“He told me he was free.””
My jaw tightened.
“But you found out he wasn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I found out he never planned to leave.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He had papers prepared.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She sounded desperate.
“You don’t understand.””
“What don’t I understand?””
“He didn’t prepare those papers because he wanted a divorce.””
I looked at the separation agreement.
“Then why?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“Because Richard told him to.””
The room became silent.
My father finally spoke.
“Sarah.””
I turned.
“You knew.””
His face was full of regret.
“I knew Richard was involved.””
“How much?””
“Not enough.””
I laughed.
The sound was empty.
“Everyone always knows just enough.””
My father looked at me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control the damage.””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt.
I turned back to the phone.
“Emily, what exactly happened?””
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said:
“Daniel found evidence against Richard.””
“What kind of evidence?””
“Financial records.””
“The fraud.””
“Yes.””
“And Richard found out?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the recording again.
The voice.
The threat.
The pressure.
“Then why didn’t Daniel go to the police?””
Emily didn’t answer.
“Why?””
“Because Richard threatened him.””
“With what?””
A pause.
Then:
“With you.””
My blood ran cold.
“Me?””
“He knew Daniel loved you.””
I almost laughed.
“Loved me?””
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I looked at my father.
“Don’t.””
My voice softened.
“I don’t want comfort.””
Emily continued.
“Richard told Daniel he would destroy your family.””
“How?””
“He said he would make sure you lost everything.””
The documents.
The house.
The money.
It all made sense.
Richard had used Daniel’s fear.
And Daniel had used mine.
“He told Daniel to move assets.””
“Yes.””
“To prepare to leave me?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Emily?””
Emily was silent.
Then:
“Richard knew about me.””
The room froze.
“What?””
“He encouraged it.””
My father looked shocked.
Even he didn’t know that.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted Daniel distracted.””
I felt sick.
The affair wasn’t the beginning.
It wasn’t even Daniel’s idea.
It was another piece on someone else’s board.
“Why would Richard need Daniel distracted?””
“Because Daniel was trying to expose him.””
I looked at the laptop.
The recording.
The documents.
The entire nightmare.
“How did you find out?””
Emily’s voice became smaller.
“Because Richard tried to do the same thing to me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He told me Daniel was dangerous.””
A bitter laugh.
“He told me Daniel was unstable. That Daniel had stolen money and was blaming everyone else.””
“Was that true?””
“No.””
She paused.
“Not completely.””
I understood.
Daniel had still done wrong.
“Yes.””
“He made mistakes.””
Emily sounded like she hated admitting it.
“But Richard used those mistakes to control him.””
I sat down.
The exhaustion finally hit me.
A few hours ago, I had been waiting at an airport with flowers.
Now I was sitting in my father’s office, listening to another woman explain how my marriage had been destroyed by a man I had never even met.
“Sarah.””
Emily’s voice changed.
“There’s something else.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
“What?””
“Richard knows you have the laptop.””
My head snapped up.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
My father stepped closer.
“What did she say?””
I put the phone on speaker.
Emily repeated herself.
My father’s expression changed.
“He can’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Richard knows the evidence exists, he’ll try to destroy it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He already knows.””
My father looked confused.
“What?””
I looked at the laptop.
“He knows.””
The hidden folder.
The recording.
The person who sent the messages.
Someone had access.
Someone knew.
The question was:
Who?
A loud sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
My father walked toward the window.
Then stopped.
“What?””
I moved beside him.
A black sedan was parked outside.
My heart started pounding.
“Who is that?””
My father didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
The front door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
My mother gasped.
“Thomas.””
My father stepped in front of me.
The door opened.
And the person standing there was not a stranger.
It was Daniel.
But something was different.
He wasn’t carrying a suitcase.
He wasn’t wearing the defeated expression from earlier.
He looked terrified.
“Sarah.””
I stared at him.
“You’re not supposed to be here.””
“I know.””
“Did they let you go?””
“No.””
His eyes moved to the laptop.
Then back to me.
“I escaped.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel stepped inside.
“Richard knows everything.””
My father grabbed his arm.
“How did you get out?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I didn’t.””
Silence.
Then:
“I was never arrested.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“They brought me in because they wanted me to think I was being investigated.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
“Because they needed to know if I still had the evidence.””
I looked at the laptop.
“And now they know.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
My father went pale.
“How?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because someone told them.””
The room became silent.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
This time, it included a photo.
A photo taken from outside the house.
Of all of us standing in the office.
The message underneath was only four words.
*He is already here.*
I looked up.
Daniel’s face changed.
Not toward the window.
Toward the front door.
May you like
Because behind us…
The door slowly opened again.
