Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
The phone kept ringing.
Daniel Carter.
A name that should have belonged to the past.
A name that should have been attached to old photographs, forgotten memories, and a grave we had visited years ago.
But it was there.
Bright on Aaliyah’s screen.
Calling.
My first instinct was to answer.
My second was fear.
Because if it really was Daniel, then every story we had built our lives around was wrong.
And if it wasn’t Daniel…
Someone was trying to make us believe it was.
Aaliyah looked at me.
“What do I do?””
For a second, I saw the little girl again.
The same girl who used to stand outside my bedroom door during thunderstorms.
The same girl who would whisper, “Can I stay here until I’m not scared anymore?””
But this time, I couldn’t tell her everything would be okay.
Because I didn’t know.
I nodded toward the phone.
“Answer it.””
Her fingers trembled as she accepted the call.
“Hello?””
Nothing.
Just breathing.
Aaliyah looked at me.
“Hello?””
Then a voice.
Older.
Rougher.
But familiar.
“Aaliyah.””
She froze.
The color drained from her face.
“Who is this?””
The voice took a breath.
A shaky breath.
“Baby girl…”
Aaliyah stepped backward.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Like her mind rejected what her ears were hearing.
The voice continued.
“I know you probably don’t believe me.””
She covered her mouth.
I felt my own chest tighten.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from today.
From years ago.
From hospital hallways.
From old conversations.
From a friendship that ended in a way I never understood.
“Daniel?”” I whispered.
Aaliyah heard me.
Her eyes moved to mine.
The voice on the phone went silent.
Then:
“Marcus?””
I stopped breathing.
Nobody had called me that way in years.
Not with that exact tone.
Not with that mix of guilt and relief.
Aaliyah looked terrified.
“How do you know Marcus?””
A long pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Because he was the only person who never gave up on you.””
I closed my eyes.
The same words.
The same promise.
Aaliyah shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, this isn’t real.””
“Aaliyah, listen to me.””
“You’re dead.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
The room felt smaller.
“Then how are you calling me?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation told me everything.
There was a story.
Another one.
Another piece of the truth that nobody knew.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
Aaliyah laughed softly.
The sound was painful.
“That’s what everyone says.””
“I know.””
“You missed my entire childhood.””
“I know.””
“You weren’t there.””
“I know.””
“Then why should I listen to you now?””
The silence that followed was different.
Not uncomfortable.
Heavy.
Like even Daniel knew he didn’t deserve an easy answer.
“Because I never stopped trying to come back.””
Aaliyah’s eyes filled.
“Then why didn’t you?””
The question came out like a child asking why someone left.
Not an adult demanding answers.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””
I looked at Aaliyah.
The same words from the recording.
The same mystery.
She turned away from me.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Aaliyah…”
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother knows.””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
“You don’t get to come back after twenty-two years and blame my mom.””
“I’m not blaming her for everything.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“I’m saying you deserve the truth.””
Aaliyah looked at me.
And I knew exactly what she was thinking.
Not again.
Not another person deciding what she deserved.
“Where are you?”” she asked.
Another pause.
“Close.””
“Close?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you come to my graduation?””
The silence was the longest one yet.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I wasn’t sure I had the right.””
That answer broke something in her.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But something.
Because deep down, I think she had always wondered one thing.
Not why he left.
Why he didn’t come back.
“Meet me,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Aaliyah.””
She ignored me.
“Meet me and tell me everything.””
Daniel exhaled.
“I will.””
“Where?””
He hesitated.
“Tomorrow morning.””
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“Tonight.””
I understood why.
She was tired.
Tired of waiting.
Tired of secrets.
Tired of being the last person to know her own story.
Daniel went quiet.
Then:
“Okay.””
Aaliyah grabbed a pen from the table.
“Where?””
He gave an address.
I watched her write it down.
When the call ended, she stood there holding the paper.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, I said:
“You don’t have to go alone.””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she would say no.
Instead, she asked:
“Did you really believe he was dead?””
The question surprised me.
“Yes.””
“How?””
I looked away.
“Because Renee told me.””
Aaliyah nodded slowly.
“And you trusted her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
That was harder.
Because the answer wasn’t simple.
“Because I loved her.””
Aaliyah looked down.
“And you loved me.””
“Yes.””
“But you still believed her.””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
Not angry.
Just understanding.
And somehow, that was worse.
“I don’t know how to feel about that.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
She looked at me.
“You had a choice. You chose what you thought was best.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“I didn’t get a choice.””
The words hit me.
Because they were true.
She picked up her jacket.
“I’m meeting him.””
“I know.””
“I need answers.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“And I don’t know if I want you there.””
That hurt.
But I nodded.
“Okay.””
She seemed surprised.
“You’re not going to argue?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Because after everything, I finally understood something.
Being a father wasn’t about forcing someone to accept your love.
It was about loving them even when they pushed you away.
“Because this is your story.””
Her eyes softened slightly.
“Marcus…”
“I’ll be here.””
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she left.
The next morning, I waited.
I tried not to.
But I did.
Every minute.
Every sound.
Every notification.
At 10:17, my phone rang.
Aaliyah.
I answered immediately.
“What happened?””
Her breathing was fast.
“Marcus.””
“What’s wrong?””
“I met him.””
I sat up.
“And?””
Silence.
“Aaliyah?””
Then she said:
“He wasn’t alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“There was someone else there.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then her voice dropped.
“Someone I know.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
She whispered the name.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it was the one person I never expected.
“Marcus…”
“Yeah?””
“It was Derek.””
I stood up.
“What?””
“He was waiting with my father.””
My mind raced.
That didn’t make sense.
Derek hated Daniel.
Or at least, I thought he did.
Then Aaliyah said something that changed everything.
“Marcus, they both told me the same thing.””
“What?””
“That the person who lied to us…”
She paused.
“And destroyed all of our lives…”
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
Her answer came quietly.
“The person who raised me.””
I froze.
“Aaliyah, what are you saying?””
She didn’t respond immediately.
Then:
“My mother wasn’t protecting me.””
A pause.
“She was hiding from me.””
Before I could answer, I heard another voice in the background.
A voice I recognized.
Renee.
“Aaliyah.””
My blood ran cold.
Because she sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Then Aaliyah whispered:
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“She knows we found out.””
The line went silent.
May you like
Then Aaliyah said the words that made my stomach drop.
“She’s coming here.””
