Chapter 8: The Truth Behind The Lie
I didn’t think.
I just moved.
I grabbed my keys and ran out the door.
For ten years, I had been the person everyone expected to stay calm.
The person who fixed things.
The person who showed up.
But as I drove toward Aaliyah, one thought kept repeating in my head.
Renee knew.
Not just about Daniel.
Not just about the recording.
About everything.
The woman I had loved.
The woman I built a life with.
The woman who watched me raise her daughter while knowing there was a truth buried underneath all of it.
I didn’t know what hurt more.
The betrayal.
Or the possibility that she had convinced herself she was doing the right thing.
Because I knew Renee.
At least, I thought I did.
She wasn’t someone who woke up every morning planning to destroy people.
She was someone who got scared.
And scared people sometimes made decisions they could never undo.
When I arrived, Aaliyah was standing outside a small coffee shop across from a park.
Daniel was there.
And so was Derek.
For a second, seeing Daniel standing alive in front of me felt impossible.
Not because I didn’t believe it anymore.
Because my brain still remembered the funeral.
The empty chair.
The conversations about a man who would never come back.
Daniel looked older.
His hair was gray at the sides.
Lines covered his face.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes of the friend who once sat beside me at three in the morning talking about everything he wanted his daughter to have.
When he saw me, he looked down.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
There were a thousand things I wanted to say.
How could you let me believe you were gone?
Why didn’t you come to her?
Why did you trust me with a responsibility you were still alive to carry?
But before I could speak, Aaliyah stepped between us.
“Not yet.””
I looked at her.
She wasn’t stopping me.
She was protecting herself.
“I need answers first.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You have every right to hate me.””
Aaliyah crossed her arms.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
That honesty seemed to hurt him more than anger would have.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
She looked at him.
“You don’t know what it was like.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“You missed my first day of high school.””
“I know.””
“My first dance.””
“I know.””
“My graduation.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
Aaliyah looked away.
“And now you’re here.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Because I was tired of letting people tell my daughter a story where I was the villain.””
The word hung there.
Villain.
I looked at him.
“Then tell us the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
We sat at a table outside.
Four people.
Four versions of the same story.
And none of us knew which pieces belonged together.
Daniel started.
“After Aaliyah was born, I made mistakes.””
Aaliyah stared at him.
“I know that part.””
He nodded.
“But what you don’t know is what happened afterward.””
He looked at me.
“Renee found out about the accident settlement.””
I frowned.
“Settlement?””
Daniel nodded.
“When I was injured before Aaliyah was born, I received money from the company I worked for.””
I remembered.
Daniel had mentioned it once.
He said it would help support his daughter.
“It was supposed to be for Aaliyah.””
Aaliyah’s expression changed.
“What happened to it?””
Daniel looked down.
“Renee used it.””
“For what?””
“She said she needed stability.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel sighed.
“She bought the house.””
Silence.
The same house where Aaliyah grew up.
The same house where I moved in years later.
I stared at him.
“You’re saying Renee used your money to buy the house?””
“Yes.””
Aaliyah looked confused.
“But my mom said…”
She stopped.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“What did she say?””
Aaliyah hesitated.
“She said you disappeared because you didn’t want responsibility.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“That’s what she told you?””
She nodded.
His face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“I left because she threatened me.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She told me if I tried to take Aaliyah, she would make sure nobody believed me.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m not saying this because I want you to hate your mother.””
“Then why?””
“Because you deserve to know what happened.””
I looked at Derek.
He had been silent.
Too silent.
“Why are you here?””
Derek looked at me.
“Because I know some of this is my fault.””
Aaliyah looked surprised.
“What?””
Derek rubbed his hands together.
“When Daniel left, Renee asked me to help.””
“With what?””
He swallowed.
“With being there.””
Aaliyah stared.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
The pain on her face was immediate.
“You knew he was alive?””
Derek nodded.
“Not at first.””
“Then when?””
“A few years later.””
Her voice became quieter.
“And you said nothing?””
Derek looked down.
“I was ashamed.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It isn’t.””
I watched Aaliyah process everything.
Every answer created three more questions.
Then she looked at me.
“And you?””
I knew what she meant.
“Did I know about the settlement?””
“No.””
“Did I know my best friend was alive?””
“No.””
“Did I know my mother lied?””
“No.””
She nodded slowly.
“That’s the difference.””
“What?””
“You were lied to too.””
The words surprised me.
Because they were the closest thing to forgiveness I had heard.
But then she looked away.
“That doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt.””
“I know.””
Daniel reached into his bag.
He pulled out a folder.
“I have proof.””
Aaliyah looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Documents.””
He placed them on the table.
“Bank records. Messages. Everything I saved.””
Aaliyah didn’t touch them.
“Why didn’t you come sooner?””
Daniel looked at the ground.
And for the first time, I saw the full weight of his regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you wouldn’t know me.””
Aaliyah laughed sadly.
“You’re right.””
Daniel nodded.
“I deserved that.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I mean I wouldn’t know you.””
That hurt him.
I could see it.
“But I deserved the chance.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
“I should have fought harder.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“Why didn’t you?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Because every time I tried, something happened.””
“What do you mean?””
He looked at me.
“The last time I tried to see you…”
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I was attacked.””
Nobody moved.
Aaliyah whispered:
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was told to stay away.””
“By who?””
He looked at the folder.
Then at me.
Then at Aaliyah.
“I never knew for certain.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Until today.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel reached into the folder.
He pulled out an old photograph.
My breath stopped.
It was a picture of Renee.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been part of our lives for years.
Aaliyah leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s the person who helped your mother keep me away.””
I stared at the picture.
Because I knew exactly who it was.
And suddenly, every strange moment from the past ten years made sense.
The warnings.
The disappearances.
The missing information.
The reason nobody wanted the truth uncovered.
Daniel slid the photograph across the table.
Aaliyah picked it up.
Then her face changed.
“Wait…”
She looked at me.
“Marcus.””
“What?””
Her hand started shaking.
“Why is your name written on the back?””
I grabbed the photo.
Turned it over.
And felt the world stop.
Because on the back were three words.
May you like
Three words written in my own handwriting.
*Protect my daughter.*
