Chapter 6: The Inheritance They Tried To Steal
The sentence on the document felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
“Property transfer completed upon the daughter’s twenty-fifth birthday.””
I read it again.
Then again.
My mother’s name was printed beneath it.
My birthday was written beside it.
And suddenly, every strange conversation, every forced family dinner, every moment Ethan’s relatives studied me like I was a puzzle began to make sense.
They weren’t trying to accept me.
They were waiting for something.
I looked at my father.
“What property?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
My father had always been the person with answers. When I was a child and storms shook our house, he would sit beside my bed and tell me everything would be okay.
But now he looked like a man standing in front of a storm he had been trying to outrun for years.
“Dad,” I said softly, “what did my mother leave me?””
He closed his eyes.
“Something the Harrington family has wanted for a very long time.””
I picked up the document.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because your mother wanted you to have a normal life.””
I laughed bitterly.
“A normal life?””
My voice cracked.
“I married a man who hurt me because I didn’t know the truth.””
His expression changed.
Pain crossed his face.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t make excuses.
“I should have told you everything before you met Ethan.””
I sat down.
“Then tell me now.””
My father opened the folder.
“My wife, your mother, was born into the Harrington family.””
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She was Victoria Harrington’s older sister.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
The woman who watched me suffer.
The woman who called me an outsider.
She was connected to my mother.
“She never told me,” I whispered.
“Because she hated your mother.””
“Why?””
My father looked at the papers.
“Because your mother discovered the truth about the Harrington empire.””
He explained that decades ago, the Harrington family had built their wealth through a company founded by my mother’s grandfather. The ownership was supposed to be shared among the family members.
But after a suspicious accident, control of the company shifted.
Victoria’s parents took everything.
My mother was the only person who fought back.
“She collected evidence,” my father said.
“And this property?””
“It was the final piece.””
I looked at the document.
“What is it?””
My father hesitated.
“The controlling shares of Harrington Holdings.””
I froze.
The company that made the Harrington name powerful.
The company everyone feared.
It wasn’t theirs.
Not completely.
It was mine.
A knock suddenly interrupted us.
My father stood immediately.
He looked toward the door.
“Stay behind me.””
The fear in his voice made my stomach tighten.
When he opened the door, Ethan was standing outside.
But he wasn’t alone.
Behind him were two strangers.
Ethan looked at me.
“I need your help.””
I stared at him.
“Why would I help you?””
His eyes moved toward my father.
“Because if we don’t work together, my family will destroy the evidence before anyone sees it.””
My father stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I wish I was.””
He handed me an envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
Standing beside Ethan’s father.
May you like
And written on the back were four words:
“She knew the truth.””
