Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Door

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The man's voice lingered in the room, calm but urgent, as though he had expected Vanessa to be ready by now.

Daniel stood with one hand pressed against his forehead. Vanessa had gone completely still, her eyes fixed on the white door.

I looked at my husband.

“Open it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Renee, please.””

“I'm not asking again.””

“There's nothing you need to see.””

“Then opening the door shouldn't be a problem.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Daniel, just let me explain.””

He turned on her.

“Explain what?””

She flinched.

I had never seen Daniel look at anyone the way he looked at her now. His anger was raw, almost desperate, but beneath it sat something more disturbing.

Fear.

He wasn't simply afraid that the baby wasn't his.

He was afraid of what would happen when the person behind the door stepped into the room.

I walked past him.

He reached for me again, but this time I moved out of reach.

“Renee, don't do this.””

“You brought your pregnant girlfriend into our home and announced that you were having a child together. You don't get to decide which truths I'm allowed to hear.””

I reached for the handle.

Vanessa made a small, strangled sound.

“Please don't.””

I looked at her.

“Why? Is he going to tell me something you haven't?””

She lowered her eyes.

That was answer enough.

I opened the door.

Marcus Reed stood in the hallway wearing a navy button-down shirt, dark trousers, and the expression of a man who had just watched his carefully constructed escape route disappear.

He was forty-three, broad-shouldered, and usually impeccably composed. Daniel had known him since college. Their friendship had survived job losses, failed investments, family funerals, and the kind of disagreements that ended other friendships.

Marcus had been in our wedding photographs.

He had given the best-man speech.

He had helped Daniel carry furniture into our first apartment.

And three months earlier, he had sat at my kitchen island drinking coffee while Daniel told him we were considering another fertility consultation.

Now Marcus stood outside my living room door, unable to meet my eyes.

“Hello, Renee,” he said.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

He glanced at Daniel.

Daniel's face had hardened.

“Marcus, what the hell are you doing here?””

Marcus entered slowly.

“I came to talk.””

“Through a closed door?””

“I didn't know she was going to show you the report.””

I looked at him sharply.

“You knew about the report?””

Marcus stopped.

The silence was immediate and complete.

Daniel turned toward him.

“What did you just say?””

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

“I knew you were getting tested. That's all.””

“No,” I said.

“You said you didn't know I was going to show him the report. That sounds like you knew what was in it.””

Marcus looked at me, and for the first time, I saw genuine shame.

“I knew about the diagnosis.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You knew?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“You told me yourself.””

“When?””

“Last month. At my place.””

Daniel shook his head as though he could physically dislodge the memory.

“I told you because you were my friend.””

“I know.””

“You told me you understood.””

“I did understand.””

“Then why are you standing here?””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

She shook her head, almost imperceptibly.

I caught the movement.

So did Daniel.

His face twisted.

“You two have been talking behind my back?””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel moved toward him.

“Answer me!””

“Daniel,” I said firmly.

He stopped, breathing hard.

I had spent years learning how to recognize the moment before his temper became something everyone else had to manage. I refused to become the mediator between two men who had apparently decided that my life was an acceptable place to hide their secrets.

I picked up the report and placed it in front of Marcus.

“Read it.””

Marcus glanced at the page.

“I already know what it says.””

“Then you also know why we're all standing here.””

He looked at the bold conclusion and then at Vanessa.

For the first time, he seemed unable to hold her gaze.

Daniel noticed.

“Marcus,” he said slowly, “why can't you look at her?””

Marcus shoved his hands into his pockets.

“This isn't how I wanted this conversation to happen.””

Daniel laughed once, bitterly.

“You don't get to choose how it happens anymore.””

Vanessa began to cry.

The tears came quickly, but I couldn't tell whether they were tears of guilt or fear. She pressed a tissue beneath her eyes without disturbing her makeup.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Daniel stared at her.

“For what?””

She looked at the floor.

“For everything.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel, let her breathe.””

Daniel turned on him.

“You don't get to defend her!””

“I'm not defending anyone.””

“Then tell me the truth!””

Marcus's mouth tightened.

I moved back toward the coffee table and sat down. My knees had begun to tremble, and I didn't want either man to mistake the shaking for weakness.

“Let's make this simple,” I said.

“Daniel, you claim the baby is yours. The medical findings raise serious questions about that claim. Marcus knew about those findings before he came here. Vanessa is terrified of whatever is behind this door.””

I looked directly at Marcus.

“What else do you know?””

He glanced toward the hallway.

“I know this is more complicated than you think.””

“Then start explaining.””

Marcus pulled out a chair but didn't sit.

“Vanessa told me she was pregnant before she told Daniel.””

Daniel's head snapped toward him.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“She called me first.””

Vanessa whispered, “Marcus, stop.””

He continued anyway.

“She said she needed help. She said Daniel had been pressuring her to make decisions about their future, and she didn't know what to do.””

Daniel looked genuinely stunned.

“I have never pressured her about anything.””

“You told me you were going to leave Renee,” Vanessa shot back.

“I said I was considering ending the marriage!””

“You said we could start over.””

“I said I needed time!””

The two of them stared at each other, their voices rising.

I sat perfectly still.

Their argument was revealing something neither had intended to reveal: they hadn't agreed on what their affair meant.

Daniel believed he was leaving his marriage for a woman carrying his child.

Vanessa appeared to believe she had been promised a future.

Marcus, meanwhile, stood between them like someone who had been involved in both versions of the story.

I looked at him.

“Why did she call you first?””

He hesitated.

“Because she trusts me.””

“More than she trusts Daniel?””

He didn't answer.

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“I didn't know what else to do.””

I leaned back.

“You had a husband who was willing to betray his wife for you. Why would you need his best friend?””

Daniel's expression darkened.

Marcus finally sat down.

“Because I was involved before Daniel ever was.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Daniel stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus pressed his palms against his knees.

“It means Vanessa and I knew each other before you started seeing her.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“How long before?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head again.

He ignored her.

“About a year.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“A year?””

“We weren't together the entire time.””

“Were you sleeping with her?””

Marcus didn't respond quickly enough.

Daniel shoved a hand through his hair.

“You were my best man.””

“I know.””

“You stood beside me when I married Renee.””

“I know.””

“You watched me spend eleven years building a life with her, and all this time—”

“I didn't plan for any of this to happen.””

Daniel let out a harsh breath.

“That's what everyone says when they get caught.””

Vanessa rose abruptly.

“I am not going to stand here while you both treat me like I'm the only person who made mistakes.””

I turned toward her.

“No one is asking you to be the only person responsible. We're asking you to tell the truth.””

She pointed at the report.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

Her mouth opened, then closed.

Marcus stood.

“Vanessa, you need to tell them about the money.””

Daniel went still.

“What money?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

I looked from one to the other.

“What money?””

Marcus reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

“I found out something last week. Something I should have told Daniel sooner.””

Daniel stared at the device.

“Marcus, if you have information about my child, tell me now.””

Marcus unlocked his phone.

“It's not just about the child.””

He tapped the screen, then turned the phone toward us.

A bank transfer appeared on the display.

The amount was $85,000.

The recipient's name was Vanessa Cole.

The sender's name was Daniel Carter.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I didn't send that.””

Marcus looked at him.

“That's what I told myself, too.””

Vanessa backed away from the table.

“Marcus, you promised me you wouldn't show him.””

Daniel's head turned slowly toward her.

“You promised him what?””

She pressed both hands against her stomach.

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus enlarged the transaction details.

The transfer date was visible beneath the amount.

It was dated two weeks before Vanessa had told Daniel she was pregnant.

Daniel's face changed as he read the date.

He looked at Vanessa, then at Marcus, then back at the screen.

“Why,” he whispered, “would my money be in her account?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because someone used your account to pay her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. That's impossible.””

Marcus turned the phone around again.

“Then explain why the authorization came from a device registered to your house.””

My heart began to pound.

I knew exactly which devices were registered to our house.

And I knew who had access to the account.

Before I could speak, Daniel grabbed the phone.

His eyes moved across the transaction details, then stopped at a line near the bottom.

A note attached to the transfer.

Three words.

*For the baby.*

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You told me you didn't need anything from me.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I didn't ask for that money.””

“Then who did?””

She looked toward Marcus.

He looked away.

May you like

And that was when I understood that the man behind the door hadn't come to help Vanessa escape.

He had come because the truth was already catching up with all three of them.
