Chapter 8: The Price of Protecting the Baby

Daniel read the message again, his face rigid.

“Who would send something like this?””

Evelyn began shaking her head.

“No. No, this can't be happening.””

I took the photograph from him.

Christopher stood beside the black car in what looked like an underground parking garage. He wore a dark jacket and appeared thinner than I remembered. His eyes were fixed on the camera.

He knew the picture was being taken.

On the back, the threat remained unmistakable.

*Bring the baby, or he dies.*

“Daniel,” I said, “call the police.””

He reached for his phone.

Before he could dial, Evelyn caught his wrist.

“Wait.””

He stared at her.

“Mom, someone has threatened my brother's life.””

“Your brother is already supposed to be dead.””

“Exactly!””

Evelyn released him.

Her eyes moved toward the photograph.

“Your father received a message like this shortly before Christopher disappeared.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did it say?””

Evelyn pressed a hand against her chest.

“It said that if he interfered with the company, someone he loved would pay the price.””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father begged me not to. He said he needed time to find out who was behind it.””

“And then he died.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Six weeks later.””

The dining room seemed to grow colder.

I studied the photograph again.

“Who knew about the trust?””

“Your father, Christopher, and me,” Evelyn replied.

“At least, that's what I believed.””

“Did Daniel know?””

“No.””

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Why would Dad hide something like this from me?””

“Because he was afraid you would try to take control of it before he understood what was happening.””

Daniel flinched as though she had slapped him.

“I'm his son.””

“I know.””

“I worked for that company.””

“I know, Daniel.””

“I helped build it!””

Evelyn reached for his hand.

“And your father loved you. But love doesn't mean a parent never sees a child's mistakes.””

Daniel pulled his hand away.

I had seen him angry before, but this was different. He looked like a man whose entire understanding of his family had been stripped away in a matter of hours.

His father had distrusted him.

His brother had suspected him.

His mother had kept secrets from him.

And the woman he had married was now standing beside him with documents that might implicate them both in a financial scheme.

I placed the photograph on the table.

“We need to establish what is real before we react to another threat.””

Daniel nodded, though his eyes remained fixed on the message.

“I'll call the police.””

This time, Evelyn didn't stop him.

He stepped into the kitchen to make the call, leaving me alone with his mother.

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Renee, there's something else you should know.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked toward the kitchen to make sure Daniel couldn't hear.

“Your father-in-law didn't create that trust simply to protect money.””

“What did he create it to protect?””

“The identity of the child.””

I stared at her.

“Which child?””

She closed her eyes.

“The child Christopher believed was his.””

My breath caught.

“Vanessa's baby?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Christopher told your father that he had been involved with a woman who was pregnant. He said he wanted to make sure the child would never be used to settle the family's financial disputes.””

I looked at the letter again.

The qualifying child.

The trust.

The warning against Daniel exercising unilateral control.

Everything suddenly seemed connected.

“Did William know Vanessa?””

“I don't think so. Christopher never gave me her name.””

“Then how could he have created a trust for her baby?””

“He didn't need to know the mother's name. The trust was designed to protect Christopher's biological descendants.””

I swallowed.

“Did Christopher know the child was his?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He believed it was possible. He wanted a paternity test after the baby was born.””

I thought of Vanessa's fear when Daniel had demanded to know who the father was.

She might genuinely not know.

But someone had been determined to control the answer before the child was even born.

Daniel returned from the kitchen.

“The police are sending someone to take a report. They've advised us not to contact whoever sent the message.””

“Good,” I said.

He looked at his mother.

“Mom, do you have any other documents from Dad?””

Evelyn nodded.

“In a safe deposit box. He left instructions that I wasn't to open it unless something happened to Christopher.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Something happened to Christopher eight months ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't you open it?””

“Because your father also told me that if Christopher's death was not what it appeared to be, opening the box could put the child in danger.””

Daniel sank into his chair.

“How many secrets did Dad leave us?””

Evelyn took his hand.

“Enough to hurt us all.””

An hour later, we returned home with copies of William's letter and the photograph.

Two police officers met us at the house. They photographed the threat, asked questions about the unknown messages, and advised us to preserve every document connected to the company and the pregnancy.

They did not promise that they could immediately identify the sender.

Before leaving, one officer asked whether anyone had recently tried to access the property.

I remembered the unfamiliar black SUV.

I told him about it.

He wrote down the details.

When the officers departed, I found Marcus waiting in the living room. Vanessa sat beside him, pale and silent.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

“Someone sent us a threat.””

Marcus studied the image.

His expression changed.

“You've seen this car before?”” I asked.

He nodded.

“It's the vehicle Christopher used before he disappeared.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I helped him get it.””

“Why?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because he needed a way to leave town without using his own vehicle.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You helped my brother fake his death?””

“I helped him disappear.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“Christopher made me promise.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in my life seems to have made promises that required lying to me.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“I know.””

“No, you don't. You don't know what it's like to bury your brother and spend eight months wondering whether you could have saved him.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“You think I haven't spent every day wondering whether I made the wrong decision?””

Daniel went silent.

For a moment, I thought Marcus might finally explain himself.

Instead, he turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you tell them about the meeting?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“What meeting?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“The man who threatened her asked her to meet him tomorrow.””

Daniel immediately stepped toward Vanessa.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said he would tell me who the baby's father was.””

“You were going to meet him alone?””

“I was trying to protect the baby.””

“By walking straight into a trap?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't have anyone else!””

The words struck the room into silence.

I looked at her.

She was the woman who had walked into my home smiling, confident that she could take my husband and replace me. She had stood beside Daniel while he announced the pregnancy as if I were an inconvenience.

But now she sat trembling on my sofa, frightened of a stranger who seemed to know more about her child than she did.

I didn't forgive her.

I didn't trust her.

But I could no longer pretend she was the only person responsible for what had happened.

“Where was the meeting supposed to take place?”” I asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“At a private medical office.””

“What office?””

She named a clinic on the north side of Atlanta.

I looked at the photograph again.

The same clinic appeared in the background of the image showing Christopher.

“Daniel,” I said, “that clinic may be connected to the person threatening her.””

He nodded.

“We'll give the address to the police.””

Marcus took a step forward.

“There's something else.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Of course there is.””

Marcus ignored the remark.

“The man who arranged the meeting didn't contact Vanessa directly. He used an intermediary.””

“Who?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“Your husband's attorney.””

Daniel's head snapped up.

“Which attorney?””

“Richard Lawson.””

The name was familiar.

Richard had handled several of Daniel's business transactions and had reviewed documents related to the family company. He had also attended Christopher's funeral.

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Richard has represented our family for years.””

“That's why Christopher trusted him,” Marcus replied.

“At least, until he discovered the documents.””

“What documents?””

“The original trust papers.””

I felt my heart race.

“Where are they?””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small brass key.

“Christopher gave me this.””

Daniel stared at it.

“What does it open?””

“A storage unit.””

“Where?””

Vanessa gave us the address.

Marcus shook his head.

“You shouldn't go there.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Why not?””

“Because if Richard is involved, he'll know the unit exists.””

Vanessa clutched the key.

“He told me to keep it safe.””

“Who told you?””

“Christopher.””

Daniel took a step closer.

“Then why didn't you mention it earlier?””

“Because I was afraid someone would find it.””

I held out my hand.

“Vanessa, may I see the key?””

She placed it in my palm.

The brass was worn smooth, with a small number stamped near the base.

*214.*

I turned it over.

A tiny strip of paper had been taped to the back.

On it was a handwritten message.

*Only open this if Daniel asks for the truth.*

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at my husband.

“Daniel, what truth did Christopher believe you needed to ask for?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

But as I watched his face, I saw something flicker in his eyes.

Recognition.

It lasted only a second.

Then it disappeared.

I held the key up between us.

“Daniel, have you ever seen this before?””

May you like

He looked at it.

And this time, he didn't answer quickly enough.
