Chapter 6: My Brother-in-Law Was Alive

I stared at Daniel while Christopher's voice continued through the phone.

For eleven years, I had trusted my husband with everything.

My finances. My future. My family.

Now a man we had buried eight months earlier was telling me that Daniel had driven him into hiding.

“Christopher,” I whispered, “where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“It's the only one I can give you right now.””

Daniel reached for the phone.

“Let me speak to him.””

I turned away.

Christopher heard him.

“Is Daniel there?””

“Yes.””

“Don't let him take the phone.””

Daniel froze.

I had never seen my husband look so completely exposed.

“Christopher,” he said loudly, “what the hell is going on?””

The line crackled.

Then Christopher answered.

“You tell me, Daniel. Why did you put Renee's signature on a document transferring my company to Vanessa?””

Daniel's face drained of color.

“I didn't.””

“Then why does the document exist?””

“Someone forged it!””

“Both signatures?””

“Yes!””

“Who had access to the paperwork?””

Daniel looked at me.

I could hear the question beneath his silence.

Who had access?

I had signed some documents. Daniel had handled others. Marcus had helped with account security. Vanessa had received money.

And Christopher, apparently, had known enough to disappear.

“Christopher,” I said, “I need the truth. All of it.””

“You deserve it.””

“Then start with why everyone thinks you're dead.””

A long silence followed.

When Christopher spoke again, his voice sounded older than I remembered.

“Because someone wanted me gone.””

“Who?””

“I thought it was Daniel. I was wrong about part of that.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Christopher ignored him.

“Renee, do you remember the accident?””

I closed my eyes.

Of course I remembered.

The call had come just after midnight. Daniel had been standing in the kitchen when his phone rang. I remembered the sudden stillness in his body, the way his fingers tightened around the device.

Then he had whispered, “Christopher?””

I remembered the drive to the hospital.

The emergency department smelled of antiseptic and burnt coffee. A nurse had led us into a private room, where a doctor explained that Christopher had been involved in a severe vehicle accident on a rural road outside the city.

The vehicle had caught fire.

The identification process had been difficult.

Daniel had told me his brother had been identified through personal effects and medical records.

I had believed him.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Christopher took a slow breath.

“I was supposed to meet Daniel at a warehouse.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, you weren't.””

“I have the messages.””

“What messages?””

“The ones where you told me to come alone.””

Daniel looked genuinely bewildered.

“I never sent you anything like that.””

Christopher's voice sharpened.

“Then who did?””

No one answered.

I glanced at Marcus.

He had gone very still.

I noticed the way his fingers curled against the doorframe, as if he were trying to keep himself from moving.

“Marcus,” I said, “do you know anything about the warehouse?””

He looked at me.

“I know Christopher was supposed to meet someone there.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Christopher spoke through the phone.

“Marcus, are you there?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Yes.””

“Did you give Daniel the documents?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Which documents?””

“The original company transfer papers.””

Marcus's face changed.

Daniel looked between us.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I gave you a folder months ago. You asked me to hold onto it.””

Daniel stared at him.

“I don't remember that.””

“Because you didn't know what was inside.””

Christopher let out a bitter laugh.

“That's convenient.””

I pressed the phone closer to my ear.

“Christopher, please. We need facts, not accusations.””

“You're right.””

His voice softened.

“Renee, the company was created to protect assets that belonged to our father. When he died, there was a dispute over who would control them. Daniel believed he should take over. I believed the company needed independent oversight until everything was settled.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Our father left me nothing like that.””

“He left us both responsibilities,” Christopher replied.

“You just wanted the money.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“That is a lie.””

“Then explain the transfers.””

“What transfers?””

“The money that left the company before my accident.””

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

Marcus looked down.

I felt as though I were watching two men dismantle a friendship that had once seemed unbreakable.

“Christopher,” I said, “you said you were wrong about part of it. What did you mean?””

“I thought Daniel had arranged the accident. I thought he was trying to remove me from the company so he could take control.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“You thought I tried to kill you?””

“I had reasons to believe it.””

“And now?””

“Now I know someone used our rivalry to make us destroy each other.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at the forged document on my phone.

“Someone wanted Vanessa to control the company.””

“Yes,” Christopher said.

“But Vanessa wasn't the only person involved.””

Vanessa, who had been standing near the living room doorway, slowly raised her head.

“Christopher,” she whispered, “please don't.””

I turned toward her.

“What does he mean?””

She backed away.

“I didn't know what the documents were.””

“Your name was on the transfer.””

“I never signed anything!””

“Then who wanted you to own the company?””

She pressed her hands against her stomach.

“I was told it would protect the baby.””

“By whom?””

She shook her head.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Vanessa, answer her.””

Vanessa looked at him with an expression I couldn't decipher.

“You don't understand what your family is capable of.””

Daniel stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Christopher told me your father had hidden money from the company for years. He said there were accounts no one knew about. He said whoever controlled the company could access them.””

Christopher's voice came through the phone.

“I never told her that.””

Vanessa stared at the device.

“You did!””

“I told you there were irregularities in the books. I never promised you access to anything.””

“You told me I could start over!””

“I told you I'd help you get away from someone who was using you.””

She laughed through her tears.

“You were the one using me!””

Christopher went silent.

I watched Vanessa carefully.

Her fear seemed real, but so did her anger. She looked like someone who had been promised a future by several different people and had finally realized none of them intended to keep their promises.

“Vanessa,” I said, “who was using you?””

She shook her head.

“I can't say.””

Daniel took another step.

“Why not?””

“Because he has people watching me.””

“Who?””

She pressed her lips together.

I looked at the unknown number that had sent the threatening messages.

“Is that why someone threatened you?””

She nodded.

“Someone knows I'm pregnant. Someone knows about the transfer. And someone knows Christopher is alive.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Then we need to call the police.””

Christopher interrupted.

“Not yet.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You don't get to tell us what to do from wherever you're hiding!””

“I'm trying to keep you alive.””

“By letting us believe you were dead?””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“You always had a choice!””

Christopher's voice rose.

“No, Daniel! I didn't. The night of the accident, I found out someone had been moving money out of the company for months.

When I tried to confront them, I received a photograph of you leaving work. Then I received one of Renee walking into the grocery store.””

My skin went cold.

“What?””

“They knew where you both went. They knew when you left the house. They knew everything.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Did you ever notice anyone following you?””

I thought back over the past year.

A black SUV that had appeared outside my office twice.

An unfamiliar man who had stood near the entrance of our neighborhood, looking at his phone.

A strange call that had ended the moment I answered.

I had dismissed them all as coincidences.

Now they returned to me with terrible clarity.

Christopher continued.

“I thought the safest thing was to disappear. I arranged the accident with help from someone I believed I could trust. The car was destroyed.

The identification was mishandled deliberately. I left the country for a while.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“You let us bury an empty grave?””

“I let you believe I was dead because I thought it was the only way to protect you.””

“You watched me grieve you!””

“I know.””

“You let Mom bury her son!””

Christopher's voice cracked.

“I know, Daniel.””

For the first time, neither man spoke.

I could hear Christopher breathing on the other end of the line.

Then he said, “I'm sorry.””

Daniel turned away, wiping his face with the heel of his hand.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I couldn't ignore the unanswered questions.

“Christopher,” I said, “why call me now?””

“Because the person who arranged the transfer has made another move.””

“What move?””

“They've started liquidating the company assets.””

Daniel spun back around.

“What?””

“Three properties are already under contract. If the sale goes through, the money will disappear into accounts we can't trace.””

“Who authorized it?””

Christopher paused.

“Someone using a power of attorney.””

I looked at the papers scattered across the desk.

My signature.

Daniel's signature.

A document I didn't remember signing.

“Whose power of attorney?”” I asked.

Christopher's answer came quietly.

“Yours.””

I felt the room close in around me.

“That isn't possible.””

“Someone has been using your signature to authorize transactions. If the documents are valid, they can make it look as though you approved everything.””

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Renee, did you ever give anyone power of attorney?””

“No.””

“Think carefully.””

“I have never given anyone permission to act on my behalf.””

Christopher spoke again.

“Then someone forged it.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me, and for a moment, I saw the husband I had loved before the lies began to surface.

“Renee,” he whispered, “I swear I didn't do this.””

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But the forged documents carried both our signatures, and someone had known exactly where to find them.

Christopher gave us an address and instructed us not to travel there alone. He said he would contact us again within twenty-four hours, once he had secured the original records.

Then the call ended.

For a long moment, the office remained silent.

Daniel sank into the chair behind his desk.

Marcus stood near the door, staring at the floor.

Vanessa had disappeared from the living room.

I found her upstairs, sitting on the edge of the guest bed with her hands wrapped around her stomach.

She looked up when I entered.

“Are you going to throw me out?””

I stood in the doorway.

“I don't know yet.””

She nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.””

“I didn't ask what you deserve. I asked you to tell the truth.””

She wiped her face.

“I was afraid.””

“So was I. But I didn't betray my husband.””

Her eyes filled again.

“You think I wanted any of this?””

“I think you made choices. I think you lied. And I think someone has been using your fear to control you.””

She stared at the carpet.

“Christopher said the baby would be safe.””

“Safe from whom?””

She didn't answer.

I sat in the chair across from her.

“Vanessa, I need to know something. When you said you didn't know who the father was, were you telling the truth?””

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

I believed she was telling the truth about her uncertainty.

But I wasn't convinced she had told me everything.

I rose to leave.

As I reached the door, she spoke again.

“Renee?””

I turned.

“There's something Christopher doesn't know.””

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“The man who sent those messages isn't trying to get the company.””

I waited.

“He's trying to get the baby.””

A cold silence settled between us.

I stepped back into the room.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the closed door, then at me.

“Because the baby is the only person who can inherit something your husband doesn't even know exists.””

I stared at her.

“What could an unborn child inherit that Daniel can't?””

Vanessa reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small white envelope.

Her fingers trembled as she handed it to me.

Inside was a hospital document bearing Christopher's name.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

*If anything happens to me, the child receives everything.*

I looked up.

“Everything what?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“The truth about your father-in-law's estate.””

May you like

Then she said something that made me understand why Christopher had been willing to disappear.

“Your husband isn't the only Carter who has been lying about who he is.””
