Chapter 3: The Money Was Only the Beginning
Daniel read the transaction again.
Then he read it a third time.
The note beneath the $85,000 transfer remained unchanged.
*For the baby.*
He placed Marcus's phone on the coffee table with such care that the movement seemed more frightening than if he had thrown it.
“Someone explain this to me,” he said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can't.””
“You can't, or you won't?””
“Daniel, please.””
“Who transferred the money?””
“I told you, I didn't ask for it.””
“That's not what I asked!””
His voice cracked across the living room.
Vanessa recoiled, clutching her handbag against her side.
I stood and moved away from them. I needed space to think, to separate the facts from the noise.
The report established a serious question about Daniel's claim of paternity. Marcus had admitted a previous relationship with Vanessa. And now there was an $85,000 transfer from an account Daniel insisted he hadn't authorized.
Three separate problems.
But they felt connected.
I turned to Marcus.
“You said you found out about the transfer last week. How?””
He hesitated.
“Vanessa called me.””
“Why?””
“She was worried.””
“About the money?””
“About Daniel finding out.””
Daniel let out a hollow laugh.
“So you knew about the transfer before today.””
“I knew it existed.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I wanted to understand what happened first.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You've had years to understand what happened. You had months to tell me the truth. Instead, you stood in my wedding photographs, ate at my table, and let me believe you were my friend.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“I know I betrayed you.””
“Do you?””
Daniel's hands shook.
“Because I'm trying to understand how someone can sit across from me, look me in the eye, and know that the woman carrying a child I believed was mine had been involved with my best friend.””
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel turned to Vanessa.
“And you. You let me tell Renee that the baby was mine.””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I thought it was.””
“Thought?””
“I was confused.””
“You're five months pregnant. How can you be confused about who the father is?””
She looked toward Marcus.
The glance lasted barely a second.
It was enough.
Daniel saw it.
I saw it.
Even Marcus couldn't pretend otherwise.
Daniel's face went pale.
“Is the baby Marcus's?””
Vanessa began shaking her head before he had finished speaking.
“I don't know.””
Marcus stood abruptly.
“That's not entirely true.””
Vanessa turned on him.
“Don't you dare.””
“Vanessa, this has gone far enough.””
“You said you would help me!””
“I did help you!””
“Then help me now!””
Their voices collided, each accusing the other of breaking a promise neither had fully explained.
I watched them, and a cold clarity began to settle over me.
These people had entered my home believing they could control the story. Daniel had expected me to accept the affair. Vanessa had expected me to accept the pregnancy. Marcus had expected to remain safely hidden behind a closed door.
They had all underestimated one thing.
I had spent eleven years learning what Daniel looked like when he was lying.
And right now, he wasn't the only one.
I picked up my phone.
Daniel noticed.
“What are you doing?””
“Taking notes.””
“Renee, put the phone down.””
“Why?””
“Because this is a private family matter.””
I stared at him.
“An $85,000 transfer from your account is not merely a private family matter. Neither is an affair involving your best friend. And neither is a pregnancy that may have been used to deceive you.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You're making this sound like some kind of scheme.””
“Then show me I'm wrong.””
She opened her mouth, but Marcus interrupted.
“The transfer wasn't supposed to happen that way.””
All three of us turned toward him.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
“I knew Vanessa needed money. She told me she was afraid of what would happen when the baby arrived. She said Daniel had promised to take care of her, but she didn't trust him to follow through.””
“I never promised her eighty-five thousand dollars!”” Daniel shouted.
“I know that now.””
Marcus's words hung in the room.
Daniel stared at him.
“You know that now?””
Marcus looked toward the windows.
“I believed she had permission to access the money.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You said you wouldn't tell them.””
“You told me Daniel had agreed to it.””
“He would have!””
“Then why didn't you ask him?””
She had no answer.
I sat down slowly.
The details were becoming clearer, but the picture was uglier than I had expected.
“Marcus,” I said, “how did Vanessa get access to Daniel's account?””
He shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Then why did you bring the transfer here?””
“Because I found something else.””
He reached into his pocket again and removed a folded piece of paper.
Daniel snatched it before Marcus could place it on the table.
It was a printed account notice showing a change to the contact information associated with the transfer.
Daniel read it.
His eyebrows drew together.
Then he looked at me.
“Did you change the recovery email on my business account?””
“No.””
“Think carefully, Renee.””
“I don't need to think carefully about something I didn't do.””
He held out the paper.
The email address wasn't mine.
It belonged to a separate account with a name I didn't recognize.
But the phone number attached to the change ended in four digits I knew.
I had seen them on Marcus's phone many times.
They were the final four digits of his personal number.
I looked at him.
“Why is your number attached to Daniel's account?””
Marcus's face hardened.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“Daniel asked me to help him set up a secondary recovery method for his business accounts last year. He was traveling constantly, and he didn't want to lose access if he got locked out.””
Daniel stared at him.
“I never authorized you to make changes to my personal savings account.””
“It was linked to the same banking profile.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't realize the permissions carried over.””
I looked at the transfer date again.
“Did you initiate the transfer?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel stepped toward him.
“Did you?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I studied his face.
“Then who did?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.
“Oh, that's convenient.””
He turned toward her.
“Don't start.””
“You told me everything was handled.””
“I said I would look into it.””
“You said Daniel would never find out!””
Daniel looked between them.
“Never find out about what?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus closed his eyes.
And suddenly, I understood that the transfer wasn't the only secret they were trying to protect.
I stood and walked to the sideboard where Daniel kept the household documents. The folder containing the medical report had originally been part of a larger collection of paperwork I had gathered for our annual financial review.
If someone had changed the account recovery details, I needed to know when.
I pulled open the drawer.
Inside were tax records, insurance statements, property documents, and a thin black notebook where I kept dates and reference numbers for major household transactions.
Daniel watched me.
“Renee, what are you looking for?””
“The original account notifications.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to know when the recovery information changed.””
I found the notebook and flipped through the pages.
There it was.
A note from seven months earlier, written in my own handwriting after Daniel had asked me to help organize his financial paperwork.
*Account security update — confirm with Daniel.*
Beside it was a date.
Seven months earlier.
I remembered that afternoon clearly. Daniel had been away on a business trip. He had called me to say there was a problem with one of his accounts and asked me to check the mail for a security notification.
I had found the letter, photographed it, and sent him the details.
He had thanked me.
Nothing had seemed unusual.
I looked at the printed transfer notice again.
The recovery change had occurred the following morning.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Did you authorize a security change the day after you called me about that letter?””
He stared at the date.
“I don't remember.””
“Check your email.””
Daniel took out his phone and searched his inbox.
His expression changed as he scrolled.
“I never received a confirmation.””
“Then someone may have changed it without your knowledge.””
Marcus shifted his weight.
“Or the system didn't send one.””
I looked at him.
“You seem very eager to explain away every irregularity.””
“I'm trying to be realistic.””
“No. You're trying to make sure we don't ask the next question.””
He looked away.
Daniel was still scrolling through his emails when his phone vibrated.
A new message appeared.
The sender was an unfamiliar number.
The message contained a single sentence.
*Stop looking into the transfer if you want the baby to be safe.*
Daniel read it aloud.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa's hand flew to her mouth.
Marcus stared at the screen with an expression that looked less like surprise than recognition.
I noticed.
“Who sent that?”” I asked.
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Then why do you look like you do?””
“I don't.””
“You do.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Enough. I'm calling the bank.””
He began dialing.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Don't!””
Daniel looked down at her hand.
“Get off me.””
“Daniel, you don't understand what you're doing.””
“Then tell me!””
She released him and backed away, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I was trying to protect the baby.””
“From whom?””
Her eyes moved toward Marcus.
He took a step backward.
Daniel followed her gaze.
“Marcus?””
Marcus held up both hands.
“Don't look at me like that.””
“Then stop giving me reasons to.””
I picked up my phone and photographed the threatening message, making sure the number and timestamp were visible.
Vanessa watched me.
“Why are you doing that?””
“Because someone just threatened a pregnant woman using my husband's financial dispute as leverage.””
“You think I'm in danger?””
“I think someone wants us frightened enough to stop asking questions.””
Marcus moved toward the hallway.
“I need to go.””
Daniel blocked his path.
“No. You don't get to walk out of here.””
“Daniel, move.””
“Not until you tell me the truth.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
For the first time, the guilt disappeared from his face.
“You want the truth?”” he said.
“Fine. Ask your wife why she was the first person to receive a copy of the original transfer notice.””
The room fell silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked directly at me.
“The first notification wasn't sent to Daniel. It was sent to your email address.””
Daniel turned toward me so quickly that the movement made the papers on the table shift.
“Renee?””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“I never saw that notification.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Then someone deleted it.””
Daniel's expression changed from confusion to suspicion.
Vanessa stopped crying.
And from the hallway came the unmistakable sound of another phone vibrating.
Not Daniel's.
Not mine.
Marcus slowly reached into his pocket.
His screen lit up.
A new message appeared.
He read it, and all the color left his face.
I stepped toward him.
“What does it say?””
Marcus tried to put the phone away.
I caught his wrist.
“Show me.””
He resisted for one second.
Then his hand loosened.
I looked at the screen.
The message was short.
*You were told to keep the paternity secret. If Daniel finds out who the father really is, we're all finished.*
Below it was a photograph.
A photograph of Vanessa entering a private medical clinic three months earlier.
And standing beside her, with one hand resting against her back, was a man none of us had mentioned.
A man Daniel knew.
A man I knew.
A man who had no reason to be involved in Vanessa's pregnancy.
At least, that was what I had believed until I saw his face.
May you like
It belonged to Daniel's older brother, Christopher Carter.
And Christopher had been dead for eight months.
