Chapter 2: The Boy Who Disappeared

The first person to move was Daniel.

He turned toward the staircase, but Margaret caught his sleeve.

“Wait.””

“Mom, we need to check upstairs.””

“I know. But we need to know exactly what we're walking into.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, can you tell me where you saw the boy?””

She nodded.

“By the big stairs. Near the gold picture.””

The Whitmore mansion had two main floors, connected by a sweeping marble staircase with a polished wooden handrail. At the bottom stood an enormous oil painting of the family's founder.

It was the kind of staircase guests photographed when they first entered the house.

Tonight, nobody was taking pictures.

Daniel looked toward Henry, the elderly house manager, who had been standing near the dining room entrance.

“Henry, did someone fall?””

Henry's eyes moved briefly toward Vanessa.

It was only a second.

But Daniel saw it.

“No, sir,” Henry answered.

Lily immediately shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Henry swallowed.

“Miss Lily, please.””

Margaret turned toward him.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Can we stop this circus? There are children here. This is a family celebration.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“Then tell us where the boy is.””

“There is no boy.””

“What's his name?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Daniel noticed that too.

“What's his name, Vanessa?””

She picked up a champagne glass from the table.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“His name is Noah.””

The glass stopped halfway to Vanessa's mouth.

Margaret looked at her granddaughter.

“How do you know that?””

“He told me.””

“Where?””

“In the little room upstairs.””

Daniel's face changed.

“The little room?””

Lily nodded.

“The one with the blue curtains.””

Henry looked down at the carpet.

Vanessa placed her champagne glass on the table so quickly that a little of the liquid spilled over the edge.

“That's enough.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I'm going upstairs.””

“Daniel, you have no authority in this house.””

“Then call the police.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

For a moment, the two stood facing each other while the guests watched.

Then Margaret spoke.

“I'm calling them.””

She reached into her handbag.

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Margaret, don't be ridiculous. You're going to destroy a family's reputation over a child's misunderstanding.””

Margaret took out her phone.

“If a child has been hurt, your reputation is the least important thing in this room.””

She dialed.

Daniel moved toward the stairs with Henry following reluctantly behind him.

“Mr. Brooks,” Henry called.

Daniel stopped.

“What?””

Henry glanced toward Vanessa.

Then toward Lily.

His hands were shaking.

“Perhaps you should look in the west hallway first.””

Vanessa spun around.

“Henry!””

The old man's shoulders dropped.

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?””

Henry's voice became barely audible.

“Because that's where I last saw him.””

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Henry, you're making a terrible mistake.””

But Henry didn't look at her.

Daniel hurried up the staircase.

At the top, he found a long hallway lined with framed family photographs. The air smelled faintly of expensive perfume and fresh lilies.

The blue-curtained room was at the far end.

Its door stood slightly open.

Daniel pushed it.

“Hello?””

No answer.

Inside was a small guest bedroom with pale-blue curtains, a wooden bed, and a toy airplane lying on the carpet.

A glass of water sat on the bedside table.

It was untouched.

Daniel stepped inside.

“Hello? Is anybody here?””

Then he heard something.

A soft knocking.

Three taps.

From behind the wardrobe.

Daniel froze.

“Who's there?””

A small voice answered.

“Are you with Vanessa?””

Daniel's heart began pounding.

“No. I'm Daniel. I'm here to help you.””

There was a pause.

Then the wardrobe door moved.

A little boy stepped out.

He couldn't have been older than seven.

He wore blue sneakers, a white shirt, and dark trousers. One sleeve was torn, and there was a small bandage near his hairline.

His face was pale.

His eyes were red from crying.

Daniel immediately crouched.

“Hey, buddy. Are you hurt?””

The boy shook his head.

“Not anymore.””

“What's your name?””

“Noah.””

Daniel recognized the name.

He kept his voice gentle.

“Okay, Noah. Do you know Lily?””

The boy's eyes widened.

“Is she downstairs?””

“Yes.””

“Did she bring the bear?””

Daniel stared at him.

“You know about the bear?””

Noah nodded.

“Vanessa said the bear was dangerous.””

Daniel felt a cold sensation move down his spine.

“What did Vanessa say?””

The boy looked toward the open bedroom door.

“She said if anyone found out, I'd never see my mom again.””

Daniel didn't move.

“Why would she say that?””

Noah began twisting the hem of his shirt.

“Because she took my mom's phone.””

Daniel glanced at the bedside table.

“Do you know where your mother is?””

The boy nodded.

“She was supposed to come tonight.””

“Where is she now?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel held out his hand.

“Come with me. We're going downstairs.””

Noah hesitated.

Then he whispered, “She's going to be angry.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“Listen to me. Nobody is going to make you go anywhere with someone you're afraid of.””

He walked Noah into the hallway.

But before they reached the stairs, Noah stopped.

“Wait.””

Daniel turned.

“What is it?””

The boy pointed toward a narrow door beside the linen closet.

“That's where she put the other phone.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a small storage space filled with cleaning supplies, folded blankets, and several cardboard boxes.

On the floor sat a black smartphone.

Its screen was cracked.

Daniel picked it up.

A notification appeared.

*17 MISSED CALLS — MOM.*

He looked at Noah.

“Is this your mother's phone?””

Noah nodded.

“She kept calling.””

Daniel turned the screen toward the boy.

“Do you know your mother's number?””

Noah recited it quietly.

Daniel dialed from his own phone.

The call connected almost immediately.

“Hello? Noah? Noah, baby?””

A woman's voice burst through the speaker.

Daniel looked at the child.

“I'm Daniel Brooks. I think I've found your son.””

There was a sharp intake of breath.

“Where is he? Is he okay?””

“He's with me. We're coming downstairs.””

“Please don't let Vanessa near him.””

Daniel stopped walking.

“Who is Vanessa to you?””

The woman began crying.

“She was supposed to be helping us.””

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

“Helping you with what?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said something that made Daniel look toward the ballroom.

“She told me my son had been taken away because of an accident. She said there was nothing I could do.””

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy was watching him with frightened eyes.

“Ma'am,” Daniel said slowly, “your son is standing right here.””

The woman began sobbing.

Then she whispered five words.

“Please ask him about the stairs.””

Daniel lowered the phone.

Noah looked up at him.

“Uncle Daniel?””

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Can I tell you something?””

“Of course.””

The boy glanced toward the ballroom.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Vanessa didn't push me by accident.””
