Chapter 6: The Photograph of the Child Who Was Never in the Will

Nobody moved.

Margaret stared at the photograph in Vanessa's hand.

Christopher looked younger in the picture, his hair shorter, his face brighter. His arm was wrapped around a woman with tired eyes and a newborn baby resting against her chest.

Daniel recognized the woman immediately.

“That's Noah's mother.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Her name is Evelyn Carter.””

Noah looked up.

“That's my mommy.””

Margaret looked at the baby.

“Who is that child?””

Vanessa's smile returned.

“That's a question you should have asked twelve years ago.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Put the photograph down.””

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked at Margaret.

“Your son wasn't the man you thought he was.””

Margaret's face tightened.

“Don't you dare.””

“He had secrets.””

“Everyone has secrets.””

“Not everyone has a second family.””

The words struck the room like a slap.

Daniel looked toward Noah.

The little boy was staring at the photograph.

“Is that me?”” he asked.

Evelyn's voice suddenly came through Daniel's phone.

He had forgotten the call was still connected.

“Noah?””

The boy turned toward the speaker.

“Mommy?””

“Oh, baby. Are you okay?””

“I'm okay.””

“Where are you?””

“Downstairs.””

Evelyn was crying.

Daniel lifted the phone.

“Evelyn, we need you here. There are some things you need to explain.””

“I know.””

“Do you know about the photograph?””

There was a long silence.

Then Evelyn whispered, “Yes.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Was that your baby?””

“Yes.””

“Was Christopher the father?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Yes.””

Margaret's hand went to her chest.

Daniel looked toward his mother.

“Dad had another child?””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“He wasn't another child. Noah was his son.””

Noah looked confused.

“Was Mr. Christopher my daddy?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Margaret slowly lowered herself to his level.

She looked into his little face.

Then she nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Noah looked toward Lily.

“Does that mean we're family?””

Lily smiled through her tears.

“You were already my friend.””

For the first time that evening, Noah smiled properly.

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She held up the photograph again.

“Now perhaps everyone understands why I had to keep this quiet.””

Detective Morgan stepped closer.

“Why did you have to keep a child hidden?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Christopher was married to Margaret's daughter-in-law's sister.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa continued.

“Evelyn was involved with Christopher before he married into this family. She disappeared after discovering she was pregnant. Christopher promised to support her and the child.””

Evelyn's voice came through the phone.

“That isn't what happened.””

Vanessa's expression tightened.

“You weren't invited to speak.””

Daniel raised the phone.

“She can speak whenever she wants.””

Evelyn took a breath.

“Christopher wasn't having an affair with me. He was helping me.””

Margaret stared.

“Helping you with what?””

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“My mother worked for the Brooks family. She discovered that money was being stolen from the estate. When she tried to report it, she was fired. Christopher helped her find an attorney.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Evelyn continued.

“After my mother died, Christopher helped me financially. I was pregnant, and he promised Noah would never be without anything.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Why would she need to hide him?””

“Because Christopher was changing the inheritance.””

Vanessa's voice was suddenly sharp.

“He wanted to add Noah to the family trust.””

Margaret stared at her.

“That's what all this was about?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Do you have any idea how much money was involved?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“So you were afraid Noah would inherit.””

“I was protecting the estate.””

“You pushed a child down the stairs.””

“I didn't know he would fall!””

Noah began crying.

Margaret immediately wrapped an arm around him.

“Don't listen to her, sweetheart.””

Detective Morgan raised her hand.

“Vanessa, stop talking.””

But Vanessa had already lost control.

She pointed at Evelyn's photograph.

“Christopher was going to leave everything to a child he had barely known for six months. He was going to erase years of my work and give control of the estate to someone who didn't belong here.””

Margaret stood.

“He belonged here because Christopher was his father.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“He was never supposed to inherit.””

Daniel looked toward the detective.

“You heard that.””

Morgan nodded.

“Every word.””

Then she turned to the second officer.

“Please document that statement.””

Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.

She took a step backward.

“I was speaking emotionally.””

“Then you should stop speaking,” Detective Morgan replied.

But Margaret wasn't looking at Vanessa anymore.

She was looking at the photograph.

At Christopher's face.

At the tiny baby in his arms.

She remembered the last birthday card her son had sent her.

The handwritten message.

I hope someday you'll understand why I made certain choices.

She had assumed he meant his career.

Now she wondered whether he had been trying to tell her about Noah.

“Why didn't he tell me?”” she whispered.

Evelyn answered gently.

“He wanted to.””

“Then why didn't he?””

“Because he was afraid someone would hurt us.””

Margaret looked at the phone.

“Who?””

Evelyn was silent.

Then she said, “Vanessa.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Evelyn, where are you right now?””

“At home.””

“Can you come to the station?””

“Yes.””

“Please don't travel alone. We'll arrange for an officer to meet you.””

Daniel nodded.

“I'm going to bring Noah to her.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“You still don't understand.””

Daniel turned.

“What now?””

She looked toward the silver recorder in the detective's hand.

“Christopher didn't just add Noah to the trust.””

Margaret's face tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa smiled.

“He changed everything.””

Henry slowly looked up.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He made a new will. A completely new one.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa glanced toward the staircase.

“Somewhere nobody will ever find it.””

Margaret looked at Henry.

“You said you had seen the original will.””

Henry nodded.

“I saw it.””

“Then where is it?””

Henry's eyes moved toward the ceiling.

“Christopher told me to keep it safe.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where?””

Henry swallowed.

“In the old nursery.””

Margaret went pale.

The old nursery had been closed since Christopher's childhood.

Nobody had entered it in years.

Daniel looked toward the detective.

“We need to go upstairs.””

Detective Morgan nodded to her partner.

“Stay with Vanessa. I'll accompany them.””

As they climbed the staircase, Daniel carried Lily's teddy bear while Margaret held Noah's hand.

The old nursery was at the end of a narrow corridor.

Its wooden door was covered in dust.

Daniel pushed it open.

The room smelled of old furniture and lavender.

A small wooden rocking horse stood beside the window.

There was a faded blue blanket folded neatly over a crib.

Margaret stopped.

She had decorated this room herself when Christopher was born.

She remembered painting the walls.

She remembered singing to him.

She remembered the tiny hand that used to wrap around her finger.

Daniel walked toward the wardrobe.

“Henry, where exactly?””

“Behind the bottom drawer.””

Daniel pulled it open.

There was nothing inside.

He removed the drawer completely.

Behind it was a small metal compartment.

A keyhole.

Margaret looked at Henry.

“Do you have the key?””

Henry shook his head.

“No. Christopher kept it.””

Daniel examined the compartment.

Then Lily suddenly spoke.

“Uncle Daniel?””

He turned.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She held up Detective Buttons.

“The bear knows.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Lily pointed toward the teddy bear's camera.

“There's another little door.””

Daniel looked closer.

Beneath the camera was a tiny metal slot.

He gently pressed the casing.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a brass key.

Everyone stared.

Lily smiled faintly.

“Detective Buttons found it.””

Daniel carefully took the key.

He inserted it into the metal compartment.

It turned.

The compartment opened with a soft click.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

On the front, written in Christopher's unmistakable handwriting, were six words:

*FOR MY MOTHER. OPEN ONLY WHEN SAFE.*

Margaret took the envelope.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a folded will, several bank statements, and a small photograph.

She unfolded the will first.

The first page named Margaret Brooks as the executor.

The second page listed the beneficiaries.

Daniel.

Lily.

And Noah.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note had been attached to the final page.

Margaret read it aloud.

“If you are reading this, then Vanessa has finally been exposed. But there is one more person you must protect.””

She stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom?””

Margaret continued reading.

“The person who helped Vanessa arrange the accident is still alive. And he has been living under our roof.””

Henry suddenly stepped backward.

Detective Morgan looked at him.

“Henry?””

But the old man wasn't looking at the detective.

He was staring at the photograph inside the envelope.

A photograph of Christopher standing beside another man.

A man Daniel recognized immediately.

His own uncle.

Margaret's younger brother.

And the man who had delivered the eulogy at Christopher's funeral.

*Richard Brooks.*

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

“Uncle Richard?””

From somewhere downstairs, a man's voice called out.

“Margaret?””

Everyone froze.

May you like

It was Richard.

And he was asking why the police were in his house.
