Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel thought he had misunderstood.

He looked at Henry.

Then at his mother.

Then back at Henry.

“Say that again.””

The old man swallowed.

“I saw Christopher three days after the accident.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No. That's impossible.””

“I know what I saw.””

“My son was buried.””

Henry lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Then explain how you could have seen him.””

Henry looked toward the staircase.

“Because he wasn't dead when I saw him.””

A woman near the champagne table began crying.

One of the guests whispered, “This cannot be happening.””

Daniel grabbed Henry's arm, not roughly, but firmly enough to keep his attention.

“Where was my father?””

“In the old study.””

“When?””

“Three days after the crash.””

“Why was he here?””

Henry took a shaky breath.

“Because he had been hiding.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel's voice cracked.

“From whom?””

Henry looked directly at Vanessa.

“From her.””

Vanessa let out a laugh.

It was sharp and unnatural.

“This is absurd. Christopher was dead. I attended his funeral.””

Henry shook his head.

“You attended the funeral of the wrong man.””

The room erupted.

Margaret staggered backward.

Daniel caught her.

“Mom, sit down.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“I want to hear everything.””

Henry looked at her.

“Christopher called me the night before the accident. He said he had discovered that someone was planning to steal control of the family estate. He asked me to help him retrieve some documents.””

“And you helped him?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Henry's hands trembled.

“His car was found near the bridge. But I never saw his body. I was told it had been badly damaged.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who told you?””

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Stop saying my name.””

Henry continued.

“She told me the police had identified him. She said the family needed to accept what happened.””

Margaret's voice became barely audible.

“And the funeral?””

Henry looked ashamed.

“I never saw the body there either.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Then whose funeral did we attend?””

Henry didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said, “I don't know.””

Margaret sank into a chair.

For twelve years, she had visited a grave without knowing whether her son was beneath the ground.

She had spoken to a stone.

She had placed flowers on a name.

And now an elderly man was telling her that Christopher might have been alive.

“Why didn't you come to me?”” she whispered.

Henry's eyes filled.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

“With what?””

“She said she had documents proving I had stolen money from the estate. She told me that if I spoke, I would spend the rest of my life in prison.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“And you believed her?””

“I had a family. I was afraid of losing everything.””

Margaret stared at him.

“And I lost my son.””

Henry lowered his head.

“I know.””

The sirens outside grew louder.

Two uniformed officers entered the ballroom.

A woman in her forties introduced herself as Detective Rachel Morgan.

Behind her was another officer carrying a small evidence bag.

“Who called us?””

Margaret raised her hand.

“I did.””

Detective Morgan looked around the room.

“Can someone explain what's happening?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“We have a recording showing a woman confronting a child near a staircase. The child was injured. We also have evidence suggesting someone may have concealed information about a death twelve years ago.””

The detective looked toward Vanessa.

“Is this the woman?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“My attorney will be speaking for me.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“That may be wise. For now, I'd like everyone to remain here while we establish what happened.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Do you have the recording?””

He showed her the footage.

The detective watched without speaking.

When it ended, she looked at Noah.

“Are you the little boy in the video?””

Noah nodded.

“Did you receive medical attention?””

“My head hurt.””

“Would you be comfortable letting the paramedics examine you?””

He looked toward Margaret.

She smiled gently.

“It's okay, sweetheart. They'll help you.””

The detective then examined the second recording.

Her expression changed when she heard Vanessa mention Margaret's son.

“Where did this footage come from?””

“Lily's teddy bear.””

Detective Morgan looked at the little girl.

“You did a very brave thing by telling your family.””

Lily hugged Detective Buttons.

“He's a good detective.””

The officer smiled faintly.

“He certainly is.””

Then she turned toward Vanessa.

“Ma'am, I'd like to speak with you separately.””

Vanessa lifted her handbag.

“Certainly.””

But as she moved toward the hallway, Henry suddenly spoke.

“Detective, you need to search the study.””

Morgan turned.

“Why?””

“Because that's where the original recording is supposed to be.””

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

Daniel noticed.

“What's in that recording?””

Henry answered before she could.

“Christopher's final conversation with Vanessa.””

The detective looked at the second officer.

“Secure the study.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You cannot search that room without a warrant.””

Detective Morgan remained calm.

“We'll follow the appropriate procedures.””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

“You're making a serious mistake.””

He didn't answer.

A few minutes later, the detective returned with a small silver digital recorder sealed inside a clear evidence bag.

Henry identified it immediately.

“That's Christopher's.””

Daniel stared at the device.

“Can it still work?””

The detective examined it.

“Possibly. We'll have it processed.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For a moment, Margaret thought she might faint.

Then Vanessa whispered something.

“There's nothing on it.””

Detective Morgan looked at her.

“How would you know?””

Vanessa opened her eyes.

“I was there.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel took one step forward.

“You were there when my father recorded it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Her face was expressionless.

Then she said, “I was there when Christopher made his last mistake.””

Margaret stood.

“What did you do to my son?””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“Ask Henry.””

Henry looked horrified.

“No.””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Tell them who drove the car that night.””

Henry's face went white.

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

“Henry?””

The old man began shaking his head.

“No. I didn't know what she was going to do.””

Vanessa continued.

“He was the one who brought the car back.””

Daniel stared.

“What car?””

Henry's voice broke.

“Christopher's.””

Margaret looked between them.

“What are you saying?””

Henry wiped his face.

“I didn't know the brakes had been tampered with. I thought Christopher had simply lost control.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You checked the car. You signed the inspection report.””

“I was told it had been repaired!””

“By whom?””

Henry said nothing.

Detective Morgan raised her hand.

“Enough. Nobody leaves this room.””

Vanessa suddenly looked at the recorder.

Then she looked at Lily.

And something in her expression changed.

She seemed to understand that the little girl's teddy bear had uncovered more than anyone could have imagined.

She slowly turned toward Daniel.

“You should be careful about what you wish to discover.””

Daniel's voice was cold.

“I've been waiting twelve years.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Then perhaps you should ask your mother what she signed the morning after Christopher died.””

Margaret froze.

Daniel turned.

“Mom?””

Margaret looked at the floor.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

“I signed something.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

“A document saying I wouldn't pursue further investigation into the accident.””

“Why?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“Because Vanessa told me Christopher had left behind debts. She said the family would lose everything if I challenged the insurance settlement.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You used my mother's grief to make her sign something.””

Vanessa didn't deny it.

Margaret slowly raised her head.

“But I never signed away my son's inheritance.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

Margaret continued.

“I signed the document you gave me. I never signed the original will.””

Henry looked at her.

“Then the original is still valid.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

Detective Morgan immediately noticed.

“Ma'am?””

Vanessa looked toward the front entrance.

Then she looked at Daniel.

And smiled.

“There's something none of you understand.””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded photograph.

She held it up.

A younger Christopher stood beside a woman outside a hospital.

Beside him was a newborn baby.

Margaret stared at the photograph.

Daniel felt his breath catch.

Because the woman in the picture wasn't Vanessa.

It was Noah's mother.

May you like

And the baby in Christopher's arms was wearing a hospital bracelet with a date from twelve years ago.

The date of the supposed accident.
