Chapter 3: The Recording That Changed Everything

By the time Daniel brought Noah downstairs, the ballroom had become a different place.

The music had stopped.

The champagne glasses remained untouched.

Guests stood in small groups, whispering behind raised hands.

Margaret was still holding Lily, who had buried her face against her grandmother's shoulder.

When Noah appeared, Lily lifted her head.

“NOAH!””

She rushed forward.

Margaret gently released her.

The two children met halfway across the marble floor.

Lily grabbed Noah's hand.

“I told them!””

Noah nodded.

“I know.””

“You're not in trouble.””

“I know.””

Then he looked at the teddy bear.

“Does it still have the camera?””

Lily held it up proudly.

“Detective Buttons never misses anything.””

For the first time that evening, Noah almost smiled.

Daniel crouched beside them.

“Can you both tell me what happened? Slowly. One thing at a time.””

Before either child could answer, Vanessa's voice cut across the room.

“This is getting completely out of hand.””

She was standing near the grand piano, her silver gown catching the chandelier light.

But her posture had changed.

Her shoulders were rigid.

Her fingers were wrapped tightly around her handbag.

Daniel stood.

“Then let's clear it up.””

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“Are you seriously going to believe two children over me?””

Margaret looked at her.

“Why shouldn't we?””

“Because I'm an adult. Because I have a reputation. Because I would never hurt a child.””

Lily stepped closer to her grandmother.

“You told Noah his mommy was never coming back.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“I never said that.””

“Yes, you did.””

“Lily, stop making things up.””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Don't speak to her.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Daniel, I have known this family for years. I helped organize tonight's celebration. I have spent months making sure everything was perfect, and now you're allowing a child to humiliate me.””

Daniel looked at the little boy.

“Did she push you?””

Noah nodded.

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Tell me what happened.””

Noah looked down at his blue shoes.

Then he began.

“I was looking for my mommy. She said she would come to the party, but Vanessa told me she wasn't allowed to.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That is not true.””

Noah flinched.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Let him finish.””

The boy swallowed.

“I heard Vanessa talking on the phone. She said she needed to find the papers before my mommy got there.””

Margaret's expression sharpened.

“What papers?””

Noah shook his head.

“I don't know.””

He looked toward the staircase.

“I went upstairs because I thought my mommy might be in the blue room. Vanessa found me there.””

Lily squeezed his hand.

Noah continued.

“She said I wasn't supposed to be there. I told her I wanted my mommy.””

His voice became smaller.

“Then she grabbed my arm.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“What happened next?””

“She pulled me toward the stairs. I tried to get away.””

Vanessa let out an angry breath.

“That's a lie!””

Noah started trembling.

Margaret immediately moved closer.

“Take your time, sweetheart.””

He nodded.

“She pushed me.””

The room became completely silent.

Noah looked at his hands.

“I fell down the steps. My head hurt. I couldn't get up.””

Lily began crying again.

“She looked at him and walked away,” she whispered.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Enough!””

She stepped toward the children.

Daniel immediately moved in front of them.

“You're not going near them.””

Vanessa stopped.

“You cannot keep me away from my own family.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Your family?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel slowly turned toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, can I see what the camera recorded?””

Lily nodded.

“But don't take Detective Buttons away.””

“I won't.””

He carefully accepted the teddy bear and examined the small device attached to its chest.

The camera was still blinking.

Daniel took out his phone.

He recognized the model immediately.

He had installed the recording system himself.

A tiny memory card was hidden inside the casing.

He pressed the side button.

A small indicator light flashed twice.

Then he connected the device to his phone.

A video appeared.

The first recording showed Lily sitting on the staircase, hugging her teddy bear and swinging her little legs.

Daniel smiled faintly.

Then the footage changed.

The camera was pointed toward the hallway.

A woman's silver dress entered the frame.

Vanessa.

She was holding Noah's arm.

The little boy was struggling to pull away.

The audio was faint, but understandable.

“Let go of me!””

Noah's voice.

Vanessa's reply.

“You need to stop making this difficult.””

The footage continued.

Noah tried to move toward the bedroom.

Vanessa blocked him.

“Your mother doesn't want you here.””

“That's not true!””

“Do you think she wants people asking questions about what happened?””

Noah began crying.

Then Vanessa pulled him toward the staircase.

Daniel's face went completely still.

The camera shook as Lily moved behind the wall.

There was a brief glimpse of the staircase.

Then a sudden movement.

Noah disappeared from the frame.

A horrible thud echoed through the audio.

The footage showed Vanessa looking down.

She stood there for several seconds.

Then she looked directly toward the hallway.

Toward the place where Lily was hiding.

And she said something nobody in the ballroom expected.

“Where is that little girl?””

The video ended.

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa's face had turned almost gray.

“That video is incomplete.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What part is missing?””

“You don't understand the circumstances.””

“Then explain them.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Margaret took a step forward.

“You left a child at the bottom of a staircase.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He was moving. I knew he was moving.””

Noah whispered, “You didn't help me.””

Vanessa looked at him.

For a brief second, her expression seemed almost desperate.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Protect everyone from what?””

Vanessa glanced toward the staircase.

Then toward Henry.

The old house manager stood near the wall, his face pale.

“Henry,” Vanessa said sharply.

“Tell them.””

Henry didn't move.

“Tell them what?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Tell them why Noah was here.””

Henry looked at the children.

Then at Margaret.

Finally, he spoke.

“Because Mrs. Whitmore was not supposed to know he existed.””

A murmur spread through the room.

Daniel frowned.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Henry nodded toward Vanessa.

“She has been telling everyone that Noah's mother abandoned him. But that's not what happened.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Henry, don't.””

The old man continued.

“Noah's mother was employed here several months ago. She discovered documents that Mrs. Whitmore had hidden in the study.””

Margaret looked toward the staircase.

“What documents?””

Henry's hands trembled.

“Documents concerning the estate.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Be specific.””

Henry swallowed.

“An amended inheritance agreement. One that transferred control of the family trust into Vanessa's name.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“That's absurd.””

Henry shook his head.

“I saw the original paperwork.””

“And you signed a confidentiality agreement!””

The words escaped Vanessa before she could stop herself.

Henry looked up.

The guests went silent again.

Daniel took one slow step forward.

“Why would a house manager need to sign a confidentiality agreement about inheritance documents?””

Vanessa clutched her handbag.

“Because this family has private matters.””

Margaret's expression changed.

“Which family?””

Vanessa looked at her.

Margaret continued.

“You married into this family. You did not inherit the right to threaten children or hide their mothers.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.

Then her phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

She looked down at the screen.

Daniel noticed her expression change.

“What is it?””

“Nothing.””

But the phone vibrated again.

The screen was visible for just a moment.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: THE ORIGINAL WILL IS STILL MISSING.*

Daniel saw it.

So did Margaret.

He reached for his own phone.

“Don't move.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Excuse me?””

“Someone just sent you a message about the original will.””

Her face hardened.

“You have no right to read my private messages.””

Before Daniel could respond, Noah suddenly stepped forward.

“That's the paper my mommy had.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel crouched.

“What paper, buddy?””

Noah pointed toward Vanessa's handbag.

“The one she took from my mommy.””

Vanessa immediately pulled the bag against her chest.

“Noah, you have no idea what you're talking about.””

The boy shook his head.

“I saw it.””

Lily looked up at her grandmother.

“Grandma?””

Margaret brushed her hair back.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

Lily slowly lifted Detective Buttons.

“There's another video.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Lily turned the teddy bear around and pressed its little paw.

A second recording appeared on his phone.

This one had been saved automatically.

It showed a dark room.

A desk.

A woman sitting in front of a computer.

And a voice that sounded unmistakably like Vanessa.

But the person speaking wasn't talking about Noah.

She was talking about Margaret.

And the first sentence of the recording made Daniel's blood run cold.

“Once Margaret signs the papers, nobody will ever find out what really happened to her son.””

Margaret's face lost its color.

Because the son Vanessa was referring to was Daniel's father.

And according to the secret recording, his death might not have been an accident.
