Chapter 1: The Door I Should Never Have Opened
My hand went straight to my belly when I opened the pantry door and saw my husband kissing my mother.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
The sound of my baby shower floated through the kitchen walls. Laughter. Music.
The clinking of glasses. My friends and family celebrating the little girl who was supposed to bring all of us closer together.
I had spent three months planning that afternoon.
Pink flowers covered the dining table. Tiny white balloons hung from the ceiling. A cake with our daughter's name written in frosting sat untouched in the corner.
And behind a half-open pantry door, I found the two people I trusted most destroying everything.
“Mom?””
My voice came out smaller than I expected.
Darla pulled away so quickly she knocked a paper cup off the counter. It rolled across the floor, spilling lemonade near her shoes.
Cole stood beside her.
Too close.
Close enough that I didn't need an explanation.
His face went pale.
“Emma…”
I looked at him.
Then at my mother.
Then at her hand.
The same hand that had been resting on my stomach ten minutes earlier.
She had smiled when the baby kicked.
“She’s strong,” Darla had whispered.
“She’s going to be stubborn like you.””
I remembered how happy I had felt.
How safe.
How stupid.
“You felt her kick,” I said.
Nobody answered.
“Ten minutes ago.””
Darla’s lips trembled.
“Emma, please—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, don’t say my name like you’re still my mother.””
Cole stepped forward.
“Let me explain.””
I laughed once.
It was an ugly sound.
“You were touching my baby.””
The room went silent.
My own heartbeat sounded louder than the music outside.
Cole reached for me.
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.””
“Emma, please listen.””
“You were standing here with her.””
My eyes moved between them.
“My husband.””
“My mother.””
The two people who were supposed to protect me.
Darla started crying.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I stared at her.
“You never wanted to get caught.””
Her face collapsed.
Cole moved again.
I grabbed the nearest thing I could find.
A stack of paper party cups.
I threw them.
They flew through the air and scattered across the kitchen floor.
“GET AWAY FROM ME!””
Someone in the living room called my name.
“Emma? Everything okay?””
The cheerful voice made my stomach twist.
They were still out there.
Still celebrating.
Still believing this was a happy day.
Darla reached toward me.
I covered my belly with one arm and stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.””
“Emma—”
“Don’t touch my daughter.””
Cole swallowed hard.
“She’s my daughter too.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
Because he was right.
And that was the cruelest part.
I walked out of the kitchen before I broke down completely.
Every person at the shower turned toward me.
My best friend Jenna smiled first.
Then she saw my face.
The smile disappeared.
“Emma?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“I need everyone to stop.””
The room froze.
My father looked up from where he was talking with guests.
“What happened?””
I looked toward the kitchen.
Cole and Darla stood there.
Together.
Like they belonged on the same side.
“I found something everyone needs to know.””
Nobody spoke.
And before I could say another word, my phone vibrated.
A message appeared on the screen.
From an unknown number.
*You think you saw the whole truth? Ask your mother why she really came back into your life.*
I stared at the words.
My fingers went cold.
Because my mother hadn’t just suddenly become close to me.
She had returned six months earlier.
Right when I found out I was pregnant.

And now I wondered if that was a coincidence.
Or the beginning of a plan.
