Chapter 5: The Test That Changed Everything

I spent the next day trapped between anger and fear.

I didn’t know who to believe.

That was the worst part.

My mother had lied to me.

My husband had betrayed me.

And somehow, both of them still had secrets left.

The DNA report arrived that evening.

Cole brought it himself.

He stood outside my door holding an envelope.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

I looked at him.

“Good.””

He nodded.

“I just want you to know the truth.””

I took the envelope.

Inside was a copy of a genetic test.

My name.

My mother’s name.

Another name I didn’t recognize.

I read the results twice.

Then a third time.

“What is this?””

Cole looked miserable.

“I don’t know.””

“You said it was about the baby.””

“It was.””

I looked up.

“Then why is my DNA connected to a stranger?””

He swallowed.

“Because your mother found out something about your birth.””

I froze.

“My birth?””

Before he could answer, my father appeared behind him.

I had never seen my father look afraid.

Not angry.

Not hurt.

Afraid.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“What do you know?””

He looked at the paper in my hand.

And closed his eyes.

“I hoped you would never see that.””

My heart sank.

“Dad.””

He sat down.

For the first time in my life, I saw him break.

“Your mother and I adopted you.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

“You were six months old.””

I shook my head.

Everything I knew about myself suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because we loved you.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“We were afraid you’d think we weren’t your real family.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward the nursery.

Toward the life I thought I understood.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was a photo attached.

A woman standing outside a hospital.

Holding a newborn baby.

My baby.

No.

Not my baby.

A baby from decades ago.

Under the photo was one sentence.

*Ask your father why he erased your real family from your life.*

I looked at my father.

He went pale.

Because he recognized the photo.

May you like

And before I could speak, he whispered:

“Emma… she found you.””
