Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Nobody Wanted RevealedI stared at my father.

Waiting for him to say he was wrong.

Waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for someone in that room to tell me this was another misunderstanding.

But nobody did.

My mother stood frozen beside the door.

My father looked exhausted, like he had carried this truth alone for years and finally reached the point where he couldn't carry it anymore.

"My grandfather?"

The words felt strange.

Almost impossible.

I looked at my mother.

She had always told me my family was simple.

Just her and me.

A small apartment.

A quiet life.

A life where we had nothing but love.

Now I was discovering that behind every silence was another secret.

"Mom."

She looked at me.

And I saw the answer before she spoke.

"You knew."

Her lips parted.

"Mariana..."

"You knew."

My voice became louder.

"You knew my grandfather was involved?"

My mother looked down.

The silence was enough.

A painful emptiness filled the room.

My father slowly stood from his chair.

"Your mother wanted to protect you."

I turned toward him.

"Protect me from what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"From the truth."

I laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I looked between them.

"My entire life, everyone has been protecting me from the truth."

My hand moved over my stomach.

"But nobody protected me from marrying into the family that destroyed us."

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Mariana, I never knew Mateo's family was connected."

I stared at her.

"How?"

She looked away.

"Because your grandfather erased everything."

My father nodded.

"He was very good at that."

I looked at him.

"Tell me."

The room became quiet.

"I want to know everything."

My father sat down slowly.

My mother took the chair beside him.

For the first time in my life, they looked like two people carrying the same wound.

Not enemies.

Not strangers.

Survivors.

"Your grandfather was named Esteban Herrera," my father began.

The name sounded unfamiliar.

But the way my mother reacted told me it mattered.

"He built his fortune through real estate and investments," my father continued.

"At first, people admired him. He was generous. Charitable. He donated to hospitals and schools."

I frowned.

"Then what happened?"

My father looked at the floor.

"Power changed him."

My mother whispered:

"Power didn't change him."

She looked at me.

"It revealed him."

A chill moved through me.

My father continued.

"Esteban wanted control over everything. His companies. His family. Everyone around him."

"And you?"

He looked at me.

"I married your mother against his wishes."

I looked at my mother.

She gave a sad smile.

"He wanted me to marry someone who would benefit his empire."

My father continued.

"When I refused, he considered me an enemy."

I felt anger rising.

"Because you loved each other?"

My mother nodded.

"Because I chose my own life."

The simplicity of the answer hurt.

She wasn't punished for doing something wrong.

She was punished for choosing herself.

"What did he do?"

My father became quiet.

"He tried to destroy us."

The room seemed colder.

"He used his connections to ruin my business. He spread rumors. He threatened people who worked with me."

My mother grabbed his hand.

"I thought leaving would make him stop."

My father looked at her.

"It didn't."

I swallowed.

"What happened?"

He looked at me.

"The night I disappeared, I found documents."

"What kind of documents?"

"Proof that Esteban was working with another family."

My stomach tightened.

"The Villalobos family."

My father nodded.

"Yes."

Everything became connected.

Carmela.

Mateo.

The mansion.

The hatred.

The way Carmela looked at me like she knew something.

"Why?"

My father sighed.

"Because our families were connected long before you married Mateo."

I felt sick.

"How?"

"Esteban and the Villalobos patriarch had a partnership."

"Business?"

"At first."

The pause that followed made me nervous.

"Then it became something else."

"What?"

My father looked at my mother.

She answered.

"An agreement."

I frowned.

"What kind of agreement?"

My mother's face became pale.

"One where our families would stay connected forever."

I understood before she said it.

"No."

My mother nodded.

"Marriage."

The word hit me.

"They wanted you to marry someone from the Villalobos family?"

My mother looked ashamed.

"Yes."

My father squeezed his eyes shut.

"Your grandfather had planned everything."

A horrible thought entered my mind.

"Mateo."

Nobody answered.

I stood slowly.

"Was Mateo part of this?"

My father looked at me.

"We don't know."

The answer wasn't comforting.

"How can you not know?"

"Because Esteban was careful."

My father looked toward the window.

"He believed children should inherit their parents' enemies and alliances."

My blood ran cold.

"Mateo knew?"

My mother reached for me.

"We don't know."

I stepped back.

Because that was the worst part.

Not knowing.

The uncertainty.

The possibility that the person I loved had been part of a plan from the beginning.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

My father's expression changed.

"Don't answer."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent that message knows where you are."

The phone buzzed again.

A new message.

I opened it before anyone could stop me.

You finally found him.

My heart froze.

Another message appeared.

Now ask your father why he never told you about the night he betrayed Esteban Herrera.

I looked up.

My father had seen the message.

And his face had changed.

Not fear.

Guilt.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Nobody spoke.

"Father?"

He looked away.

That hurt.

Because I had spent my entire life waiting to meet him.

And now, minutes after finding him, I was discovering he had secrets too.

"Tell me."

My voice cracked.

"What happened that night?"

My father sat down.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then:

"I made a choice."

"What choice?"

He looked at my mother.

Then at me.

"A choice that saved your life."

I frowned.

"But cost someone else's."

Silence.

The room felt suffocating.

"Who?"

My father looked down.

"Your grandfather."

I froze.

"What?"

"The night I disappeared..."

His voice became quieter.

"I wasn't running from Esteban."

My mother closed her eyes.

"Lucía..."

He continued.

"I was trying to stop him."

I stared at him.

"Stop him from doing what?"

My father's face changed.

And suddenly, I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Deep, endless regret.

"He planned to use you."

My blood ran cold.

"Me?"

"When you were born, Esteban believed you were the key to everything."

I felt sick.

"What does that mean?"

My father looked at me.

"Your grandfather didn't see you as a child."

A tear fell from my mother's eye.

"He saw you as a connection."

My father whispered:

"A way to unite the Herrera and Villalobos families forever."

I shook my head.

"No."

But my father continued.

"The day you were born, he made a promise."

My fingers tightened.

"What promise?"

My father looked toward the door.

Like he was afraid someone could hear.

"He promised that one day, his granddaughter would marry the Villalobos heir."

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, the impossible became possible.

Mateo wasn't random.

My marriage wasn't an accident.

My entire life had been moving toward something I never understood.

And then my father's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

I watched him answer.

"Hello?"

A voice spoke on the other end.

My father listened.

Then stood.

"No."

My mother looked alarmed.

"What is it?"

My father lowered the phone slowly.

His eyes locked on mine.

And I knew before he spoke that something terrible had happened.

"Mateo is here."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

My father looked toward the hallway.

"He came alone."

A pause.

Then:

"But he isn't here to apologize."

The room went silent.

My father's voice dropped.

"He's here because he knows the truth."

The door behind us opened.

And Mateo stepped inside.

His face was broken.

His eyes were full of fear.

Then he looked at me.

And said the words I never expected to hear.

"Mariana... your mother-in-law didn't attack you because she hated you."

May you like

He swallowed.

"She attacked you because she was afraid you would discover what my family did to your father."
