Chapter 9 - The Last Villalobos SecretI thought betrayal had a sound.

I thought it would be dramatic.
A scream.
A slammed door.
A confession shouted across a room.
But the truth was quieter than that.
Sometimes betrayal was just someone standing in front of you, unable to look you in the eyes.
Sometimes it was a man you loved saying, "I'm sorry," after the damage was already done.
I stared at Mateo.
"My father ordered my attack?"
He looked like he wanted to deny it.
But he couldn't.
Not anymore.
"He didn't tell my mother to hurt you," Mateo said quickly.
I almost laughed.
"Do you hear yourself?"
His face fell.
"My mother-in-law came at me with a baseball bat."
"I know."
"Your father caused it."
"I know."
"Then why are you defending him?"
Mateo looked down.
"I'm not."
But he was.
Not with words.
With the years of silence.
With every time he chose to protect his family instead of me.
My father stepped between us.
"Where is Ricardo Villalobos now?"
Mateo hesitated.
That hesitation told us enough.
"Mateo."
He swallowed.
"At the mansion."
My mother's expression changed.
"He's there?"
Mateo nodded.
"He returned after everything happened."
My father looked at him.
"Why?"
Mateo's hands tightened.
"Because he wanted the documents."
The room went silent.
"The documents were never about money," my father said.
Mateo shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"They were about control."
I looked at the folder on the table.
The old papers.
The contracts.
The evidence of a plan that started before I was even born.
My entire life had been connected to a war I didn't know existed.
My mother took a slow breath.
"What does Ricardo want now?"
Mateo answered quietly.
"You."
The word hit me.
"Me?"
He nodded.
"Your signature."
I frowned.
"On what?"
"The inheritance transfer."
My father picked up the papers again.
"If Esteban created the trust, why would Ricardo need Mariana's signature?"
Mateo looked at him.
"Because there is another document."
Everyone became still.
"Another document?"
Mateo nodded.
"My father found it."
My mother looked terrified.
"Where?"
"Hidden with the originals."
My father stared at him.
"What does it say?"
Mateo looked at me.
"That the Herrera heir can dissolve the agreement."
I didn't understand.
"Then why would he need my signature?"
Mateo's expression darkened.
"Because if you sign it willingly, the agreement becomes permanent."
The room went cold.
"He wants me to give up my own inheritance?"
"Yes."
"And he thinks I'll do that?"
Mateo looked away.
"He thinks he can force you."
My hand moved over my stomach.
The same feeling returned.
The feeling I had in the mansion.
The feeling of being surrounded by people who believed I was powerless.
But they had been wrong.
They just hadn't realized it yet.
My mother looked at me.
"Mariana, we need to leave the city."
"No."
Everyone looked at me.
Even I was surprised by my answer.
"No?"
I shook my head.
"I spent my entire life running from their secrets."
I looked at the folder.
"I am done running."
My father watched me carefully.
"You don't know what you're facing."
I looked at him.
"I know exactly what I'm facing."
I placed my hand over my stomach.
"I have a daughter."
My voice became stronger.
"And I refuse to let her grow up believing that powerful people can hurt her because nobody will stop them."
My mother reached for my hand.
And for the first time that day, she smiled.
Not because she was happy.
Because she was proud.
We returned to the Villalobos mansion before sunset.
This time, I was not being dragged there.
I was walking in.
The same gates that once made me feel small opened in front of me.
But I was different.
The woman who entered that mansion earlier had been desperate to belong.
The woman returning now didn't need their approval.
Mateo walked beside me.
My mother and father followed.
Five bodyguards surrounded us.
But the strongest thing I carried wasn't protection.
It was the truth.
The garden looked exactly the same.
The tables were still there.
The pool still reflected the sky.
The place where I fell was still visible.
Except now, nobody was laughing.
The relatives who remained avoided my eyes.
Good.
They should.
We entered the mansion.
And there he was.
Ricardo Villalobos.
Sitting in the main living room.
Calm.
Elegant.
Like nothing had happened.
He was older than Mateo.
His hair was silver.
His suit was perfectly pressed.
He looked like a man who had spent his entire life making problems disappear.
When he saw me, he smiled.
Not warmly.
Politely.
That was worse.
"Mariana."
I stopped.
"Ricardo."
Mateo looked at his father.
"You knew she would come."
Ricardo smiled.
"Of course."
My mother stepped forward.
"You planned this."
Ricardo looked at her.
"Lucía."
The way he said her name made my skin crawl.
"You still look the same."
My father moved immediately.
"Don't speak to her."
Ricardo looked surprised.
"Gabriel."
A small smile appeared.
"After all these years."
My father stared at him.
"You should be in prison."
Ricardo laughed softly.
"Careful."
He looked around.
"Accusations are dangerous."
My father stepped closer.
"You know exactly what you did."
Ricardo's expression changed.
Only slightly.
Then he looked at me.
"Your father always was dramatic."
I felt anger rising.
"You attacked me because of a piece of paper."
Ricardo shook his head.
"No."
He looked almost disappointed.
"I attacked you because you refused to understand your place."
The room went silent.
Mateo looked at him.
"Father."
Ricardo ignored him.
"Your grandfather built something bigger than any of us."
He walked slowly around the room.
"A legacy."
I stared at him.
"By controlling people's lives?"
He smiled.
"By creating order."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You think forcing families together is order?"
"I think sacrifices are necessary."
My stomach turned.
"Sacrifices?"
He looked at me.
"Your grandfather understood something your generation doesn't."
He stepped closer.
"Families survive when individuals obey."
The words made my blood boil.
"You don't want family."
I looked around the mansion.
"You want ownership."
For the first time, his expression changed.
A crack.
A flash of anger.
Then it disappeared.
"You sound like your mother."
"Good."
My answer came instantly.
He studied me.
Then looked at Mateo.
"You brought her here."
Mateo's face hardened.
"Yes."
Ricardo sighed.
"I hoped you had more sense."
"I should have protected her."
The room became silent.
Because Mateo had never said that before.
Not when Carmela attacked me.
Not when everyone laughed.
But now, finally, in front of the man who controlled him...
He said it.
Ricardo looked disappointed.
"You're choosing her?"
Mateo looked at me.
Then back at his father.
"Yes."
Something changed.
Not just in Mateo.
In everyone.
Because that was the first time he had chosen me publicly.
Ricardo smiled.
A cold smile.
"Then you leave me no choice."
He opened a drawer beside him.
And removed a document.
My father's expression changed.
"No."
Ricardo placed it on the table.
"This is the original agreement."
My mother stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?"
Ricardo looked at her.
"From the person who gave it to me."
Everyone froze.
My father frowned.
"Who?"
Ricardo smiled.
And then he said the name nobody expected.
"The person who has been helping me all these years."
My heart started pounding.
Because the answer meant there was another betrayal.
Another secret.
Another person inside our family.
Ricardo turned toward the doorway.
"Come in."
Slow footsteps approached.
Everyone looked.
And then I saw the person standing there.
The person who had known the truth from the beginning.
The person who had helped destroy my family.
My breath stopped.
Because it wasn't a Villalobos.
It wasn't a stranger.
It was someone I had trusted my entire life.
My mother stepped back.
Her face went pale.
"Impossible."
The person looked at me.
And whispered:
"I'm sorry, Mariana."
My world collapsed.
May you like
Because the person standing there...
Was my grandmother.
